I dont even take my dogs out without seatbelts! And they too are never allowed to sit in front.

Sick of irresponsible parents. I am more responsible with my dogs than many parents are with their kids.

For the record: Mine sits in the back, buckled up, but do you have kids? If so, you want to say you NEVER did anything stupid/irresponsible (even in hind sight, or according to others) when it gets to them

Love and reason has nothing to do with each other :) Some parents do the daftest things according to other people, but ask them and they'd say the love their kids.

I can take the "love kids if..." thing further:

Do parents love their children if they allow them to climb tree, knowing they can fall out?

Do parents love their children if they allow them to play with catapults, knowing they might shoot at each other (coz they are kids/boys)?

Do parents love their children if they buy them motorbikes/scooters when they turn 16, knowing they'll race them?

Do parents love their children if they dote on them, 'knowing' they are actually turning them into spoilt brats?

You do not need to be responsible to love.... neither does loving make you responsible

Gonna disagree on this one. Growing up on a farm and having endless places to play, it's not gonna be easy to stop them from climbing. When I was young I could be found climbing a tree somewhere most days. Built tree houses and various other stuff. I see it as part of my growing up and at least it kept me away from video games. I can assure you my parents do love me and I couldn't have asked for better parents. :)

But then again, this is just my opinion and I don't have children of my own

seen many parents letting their kids stick their heads out the windows whilst driving!! also witnessed a parent leaving his 2 young (under 5) kids in the back of an open bakkie when he ran into a shop.

but again you would see the kids buckled up in the back seat, but the parent is driving in excess of 140km/h. so the responsibility of being a parent is where? there is a long list of things we as parents need to do and live by.

i dont know all the rules and sometimes find myself doing irresponsible things, but i try my best.

this is a tough topic.

so any bets on who is going win tomorrow's FA Cup game: Man United or Liverpool???

I just skimmed through this so not sure if I am repeating someone else.

It is natural selection, the stupid people will have accidents and kill their stupid children. Stupid people problem solved.

Love is not just a feeling and an emotion, it has very much to do with how you treat those you say you love. If you do not treat them right, then maybe you need to re-look just how much you love them.

If I neglect the safety of my kids, that is not about reason, that is about neglect.

caring and neglect is about doing the 'right things' making it a reasoning process, albeit subconsciously as the notions of right /wrong and expected behaviours are ingrained into us from an early age.

Love is about caring, and caring is NOT neglecting. The definition of neglect has been refined over time so that things that were acceptable years/decade/centuries ago are not acceptable any more (and vice versa) Most children of today would be considered spoilt brats according to definitions of 50 years ago. Plenty of (if not most) kids from the 1800's would be considered neglected today.

it is all subjective I'd say. It was acceptable for my brother and myself to hitch a lift to the swimming pool on the back of a open Mini bakkie roaring at full tilt into town (with a tractor tube which filled basically the whole loadbed!). Today, the parent who does that will be deemed unfit!

Did either of the olden day, or modern parent doing that cared less or more for his/her children?

Parents who let their kids ride Quads with out helmets or proper protective gear. I read about a girl of 9 years old who is mentally challenged now after a scull fracture when a quad roll on top of her.

These parents can not pissibly love their kids if they allow this.!

Despite this being the hub, we just cannot judge people on their apparent actions / inactions

Why is this such a big issue for you and why do you frame the question in emotional terms?

I saw before that you said you took this issue up with a stranger on the road and got the finger from her - what's the big problem that it needs airing here?

Its obvios that kids should be transported safely & its the law; its also obvios that people are imperfect and make errors of judgement.

Doesnt say anything about love.

Isn't smoking in the car with kids under 12 illegal?

Yes. Problem is enforcement, as with so many other things in SA.

It is a big issue because children do not have choices when it comes to decisions their parents make. And hopefully discussing this openly will help us all see another side of things. If we all sat back and accepted that bad parenting was ok then we would be failing as a society. Society work well when it acts as a whole, but when it stops worrying about the needs and cares of those who cannot protect themselves it fails.

I still cannot understand how a person can say they care for their child if they willingly do not provide them with safety. And if you do not care, do you truly love your child like you should?
