Eugene Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Just been watching Pedal Talk and there was an insert on riding on the road and they stressed heavily on safety. Phil Ligett was part of the whole safety drive and there he was, on tv, riding (and chirping to the cameras) without a helmet. Ironic......

kosmonooit Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 In Europe its not such a big deal to ride on the road with a helmet (recreationally or commuting) so no need to get ur koeksisters in a knot. Did watch same program, sies it's bad. That insert added absolutely no value to the issue of safety for cyclists on the roads.

Now I've got the onerous task of trying to unknot my koeksister - however, better a knotted koeksister than a broken pip!

kosmonooit Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Sure wearing a helmet is important and I do all the time, but essentially its about personal safety, much like wearing a seatbelt. The issue came up in London recently with their hire bike scheme, where you can rent a bike short term outside tubes etc and they (Boris & co.) made the point that its important, but the scheme would go ahead without helmet hire or compelling anyone to wear one. And that is from the mother of all nanny states. JB it was on some SABC sports program, the only time I ever tune and hardly getting my license fees worth. I did record it with a view to putting in on cycle torrents but is so bad I really cant embarrass us.

I think it's rather insolent that most people think wearing a helmet is the be all and end all of "Cycling Safety". How many of the cyclists killed on our roads were wearing helmets? So what do you think cycling safety is about? Surely you don't think simply wearing a helmet and venturing onto our roads makes you safe? You may as well then take a shower after having sex with a stranger...

I live in Drama Street, Somerset West, also one of the safest roads in Somerset West. My son was in the car and I decided he did not need his safety belt as it was only a 600m ride on a straight road. He nearly went flying through the front windscreen as some nut case jumped a stop street. Safety is all about the unknown and the gear we wear is there to reduce the chances of serious injury.
