This is just the problem, found a 1.5km 6-8% hill and trying to excersise on it ,the problem is at my current ratio setting, I K@K off with-in the first 500metres , I am fairly fit and ( like previosly mentioned do a flatish 100km race in 3hours,)

i just need to understand if i,m just really k@k at hills or on wrong settings :)

What is your "***" limiting factor?

i.e. what exactly happens when you *** off

leg pain, no breath or....

My length is irrelevant, and I don't wish to boast, so if it's all the same to you, I'll list my height instead.

+1 Must be my poor German !

Thanks for what its worth! :P

Luke has raised two points which had been missed previously:

1. Cadence. Everybody's optimal cadence is different, although I think you can train yourself to move your optimum slightly. For most newcomers to cycling, raising cadence will prolly bring benefits in terms of speed and knees not exploding.

2. Crank length. Longer cranks give more leverage, but make for larger circles to be pedalled, and hence more difficulty in keeping cadence high.

I enjoyed my riding way more on that old piece of steal then on the new Merida 906 . I'm just saying might be the two bikes had totaly different set componet set ups and ratios and Ive never checked !!!!!!!dry.gif

CharlV you are already running a compact crank (50/34) with 11/28, so you wont be able to get a higher gear ration than you already have.

Just train those hills until you ears bleed ;) You will get stronger and you will be able to climb at a lower cadence with more power.

I had a compact setup for a while but used 52/36 and 11/23 at the back, never needed more than that.

In your 34 and 28 you must be spinning at 160rpm?

Now have standard 53/39 with 11/25 and a 28 might have been handy going up Naval hill but when you start going for higher gear ratios you loose some of the gears in between. And it is those gears in between that you miss the most because it would have had you in the perfect cadence.

Ok i think i see the problem, you should be seeing black spots and tasting blood (coppery taste), not seeing dead anythings - thats would be enough to slow anyone down.

Maybe you just need to pace yourself on the hill better. How quick do you reach the dead phase?

Hamstrings - check seat height might be fractionaly to high.

210 bpm - sounds to high, whats your max hr?

Forgive the pedantry but here goes...

If you are spinning faster for any given speed, that is a lower gear, not a higher gear. Just like in your car, the engine spins faster at 20km/h in first than it will in third.

When talking about a "big" gear or a "small" gear, a big gear is one with a large "development", i.e., you travel comparatively far for one turn of the cranks. Gear development (or size) is often expressed in terms of inches.

Thus an 88" gear is one where for one turn of the cranks, the bike moves 88 inches forwards. And a large gear is high gear ratio and a small gear a low gear ratio.

I feel so much better now.

I'm 1.79 and 104kg and run a 50/34 with a 11/28. Lighter than that you dont need. Just keep on training and you'll be flying up those hils in no time !! I'm also working hard at shedding a few kg's before the Argus. Less weight makes a huge difference up the hills !

Max HR = 185 according to age ,will check seat height tonight! DEADPHASE 1/2 way up !
