I ran the Arwyp 15km night race last night.

R40 to enter - at the event - no penalty for "late" entry. Ok an extra R20 because I had to buy a license (I'm not a member of anything running - yet).

The race had at least 6 water tables, there were coke bottle candles everywhere, masses of pointsmen on duty, cops all over the place and the goody bag had a tee shirt, water bottle, 2 free athlete publications and various other "fillers" like cycle goody bags.

So why the ~R100 difference in entry fee? The distance is the only thing I can think of but I reckon the water tables and manpower involved in those 15km was equal to any 100km cycle race.

I think it's the "club" aspect - in running each club hosts it's local race and volunteers are aplenty with running being the reason for the race not profit. At the end everybody got together and shared a beer and war stories for many hours.

Methinks cycling could learn a lot from runners in terms of racing.

I have the guts full of the exorbitant fees charged for cycle races.I am sick and tired of continuously hearing about the fact that the entry fees "are going for a good cause to Sikolelao School or similar`" etc.I am upset about the fact that I have to hear about how "costly" the organisation of such races are - never do anybody tell us what sponsorship and naming rights contribute to the race. Now, to crown it all, when you do slip up and am late with the on-line entry, and EXTRA R 90,00 is levied - for instance with the Fast one? What does one get extra for that? Or, is it a slap on the wrist saying "Don't do that again"? At that price???C'mon Cycling South Africa and all the Race Organisers - you are effectively KILLING the sport! It also WON'T wash to say - "If you can't afford it, don't do it", as we WANT to keep the sport going. But, heck - at these entry fees everybody is already cutting back!!! Some 4 - 5 years ago, everybody competed week after week, ..... now most probably only once a month if that much.In closing this - look what happened to motor sport, rallying etc. The sport is kept alive by a small group of wealthy people ...... please don't do this to Cycling????

Don't be unreasonable. Say there was no penalty.

Now only 10 people pre-enter. Race organisers prepare for 15 people just in case. On race day 5000 arrive and everyone wants a medal, something from the watertable et.

......ooooooo don't get me started..... <_<

Whenever you have to pick up something from Cyclelab Fourways, give me a pm and if I do the race I'll get your number.

I work in Sunninghill which helps a bit

Completely agree on the club aspect. The runners run proper clubs, and cyclists look at clubs with 'what can I get out of it' eyes.

Some running clubs even organise a special helpers race the day/weekend before their club races. They beauty is that they even get helpers to help at the helpers race. So, if you run a a race organised by your club, say thank you to the volunteers by helping at 'their' race.

from my late PPA entries I always do, I had spend around R500 for january so far...another race this weekend..does not sounds like a lot but that excludes petrol...when I cycled 8 years ago it was only R30 a race, the prize giving was way better and setup was awesome, they actually closed some roads still....

Agreed. The feeling I got from the race was that runners are fiercely proud of their club and feel like they're contributing to the club rather than getting cheap clothing and being forced by the CSA to join.

I wonder why the Interclub Cycling Series dies a horrible death? I think that is the perfect medium for creating club pride and membership.

Is it still going?

POOR pansies you mean.

No, I mean whingeing pansy girls.

You spend how much on kit?

You spend how many hours training?

And then you squeal about race fees? Racing isn't compulsory. If you don't want to do it, don't.

Welcome to the market economy. If race fees do not represent good value, don't enter.

If you feel race organisers are ripping everybody off, go right ahead and do it cheaper.

Bikemonster, if you read the whole topic, you would have seen that me and Spidey are complaining about driving to pick up a piece of paper...

I know that's your particular beef, but the whole "race fees are too fierce" thing comes up very regularly.

Ahhhh, WTF, there are only every about 12 topics on the Hub...it's part of the fun!

Nothing was intended to be taken personally.

Hav been doin this a while 30 yrs in the sport and started local CT funrides a long time ago. Also find the entries to be getting out of hand. PPA used to regulate, but now appears to let organisers have carte blanche...

Know of a number of peole wanting to bailon the Argus due to the ever increasing cost.

As for Ironman, after my 1 eperience in 2006 I would gladly pay the entry fee again - super organization of an awesme event. The feed stations, pasta party, massages during and post race, 100% road closure fo 17hrs of event, post race party, etc, etc. Well worth it and I'm sure that more cyclists would moan if they had done an Ironman!

Have you seen the fees for interclub races these days? A few ago it was R20 per entrant and the club payed for it.

Don't forget the petrol used to drive to CycleLab JHB to pick up a piece of paper, because you cannot pick it up on race day!

Ja what the hell this is upsurd! like the silverstar race on 16 Feb. I must go to jhb in working hours to pick up my nr! its not possible driving from pta.

I did a small tally at the end of last year of what all my races cost me in 2010, now keep in mind this excludes travelling / collecting those stupid number a few days before and the cost of energy drinks and bike spares.however it does include my race licence and club fees.

R 16185.00 for entry fees only in 2010 !! this year I'm cutting back!! I can ride and keep fit with out the expense.
