Did a road loop this afternoon...

Had the Garmin on - middle blade up front (32t) and 17t(?) at the back - which is as close as I can get to what will be my most likely SS combo...

Well now...

Think fat man and a blur where his feet/pedals are

Max speed I could get up to, cranking/pedalling, was about 30km/h... couldn't comfortably pedal any faster!

Which is going to take some getting used to...

Now bearing in mind that worrying about stuff like this, is rather anti- the whole SS thing, but still had me wondering:

What's a respectable/high-ish speed to be reached on a SS, whilst pedalling?

Many have said that you get used to pedalling faster - but surely there's a limit?

Where the rest of you at - anyone measured?

I'm not sure what speed it is on my fixed gear  but I do know that it's about to unscrew my hips at that point :o :(

 That's a pretty apt description! :D

What is a middle blade? Were you on your MTB?

Uh - ja - should've made that clear!

Middle blade in front - XT crank, so that's a 32/34?

Trying to get a sense of what the SS will run like on my usual routes.

i'm using 32/16 and i'm can manage about 24km/h for short bursts, and about 18/19km consistently. i'm no lightweight and definitely not the fittest mtb'er by any measurement, but took extreme pleasure this morning by hanging onto the wheel of a mtb'er pair with 30 gears each up a small but sustained climb :) it hurt a lot but so worth it!

I find it becomes more uncomfortable on the ass after a while. With you legs whizzing round, the bum starts to bounce up and down on the saddle which in turn becomes highly uncomfortable. This with a 32x18 ratio.

Besides RodTi, what doing riding a single speed on the road for, its suppose to be for tooling around the forest getting dirty... :P

i found this initially as well, but now i don't have this problem at all, seems the more you ride the better your cadence is, and more efficient your pedal stroke (ie no more 'bobbing')

You girls shoulda learnt how to ride when ya was wee... At the academy, we was torted how to spin a gear. I can still do around 40-45kmh on a 39/20ish... Losers. Shoulda learnt the craft and had some respect for it. FFS, 30 kmh in a 42/17? I feel bad for ya, son.

Hey son (James Earl Jones voice); we don't all have pneumatic legs.

53-11 I spin out at just over 70km/h. Doing about 120RPM but bouncing a bit too much.

Learn how to do it without bouncing and report back.
