The race was nice and fast.

We got a 01:23 on the 30km.

It was also a pleasure to meet Faceplant, IceAngel and GTrider at the gazebo.

This should me made an institution, always great to meet fellow hubbers at races.

That was interesting...

The first 4 of us rode 3 different courses...1st and 3rd didn't do the seriously marchy section with 80cm deep wading water at all....2nd place did it once and I did it twice. My team mate in 6th also did it twice. The worst part is I still don't know who was right - the turn off from the tar road into the march had a few cones, no marshall and no yellow cross. Interesting.

Still - it was good fun - the course was a bit less trodden than last year so grass knolls and bumps were the order of the day. Perfect for my 29er :)

The heat - yegads man! Enough said.

I died with about 2km to go and rolled over the line with Tweety Bird and Elvis circling my head singing Christmas carols.

The section where the grass was tied back was cool - until my right bar end hooked a knotted clump and I barreled rolled across the path. I had a quick giggle to myself then jumped back on the bike.

Apologies to thehub crowd - I had a little look see after the race but only found an empty gazebo complete with pram/lady combo (who didn't seem to know what thehub was) and a table with a basket of muffins. I had to leave quite quickly but next time I shall stick around and nick a muffin...I mean chat to you guys ;)

Edit: almost forgot - this course sucks in terms of back marker overtaking - loads of single track with limited overtaking space near the end is always going to be messy. Not bad when you're fresh but Elvis and Tweey bird sang louder and louder everytime I wandered off into the rough bush dodging ant hills and saying "passing on your right - thank you - passing on your right - thank you"... Irritating for all parties.

eldron, im trying to think of where the marshy area is you talking about but i cant seem to picture it? but i think if there was no marking or marshalls at the entrance it was the wrong entrance, i know a section along the river had to be cut out because of the water level so im assuming it must be that? the two entrances off the tar road both had marshalls if i remember correctly?

Eldron, as one of those that you possibly had to pass I agree that it could be irritating. But what was most irritating was when the fast rider shouted "Left" now I am not sure what he means that I must keep left or he is passing on the left.

A little convention here could save an enormous amounts of drama so would it be possible to add just one extra word such us keep left or passing right, a thank you could be optional but quite nice for all.

As for the lady that said passing left and then passed me on the right well you only got the passing part correct. ;) Pity that you did not complete the second lap so that I could return the compliment. :D

After some chats to mates - yup it was the marshy bit that was cut out that I did twice. Ah well extra training and a good reason to pop in a new BB. I saw a pile of cones at the entrance to the marshu bit so I assumed it needed to be done. DOH!

@Water Rat - the extra word doean't always help... My standard is "passing on your right....thank you" - problem is that 34.231% of people don't know which side is right  Plus there are wobblers, panickers, randomers, centre path walkers, drop off walkers, middle of path puncture fixers and people who think that because they paid their entry they deserve to ride in the middle of the path at whatever speed they want wish and f&ck anybody who dares to interfere with their ride...

That said I think double lappers and courses where half/full riders merge should be avoided at all costs. I know thats not always practically possible - it just creates confrontation and irritation.

THAT said 95% of passing happened with no problem at all. As with all things I guess the 5% make it *** for the rest.

Also did marsh section twice. And to the 30km leaders trying to push trough where there is no space, that's what happens! Thorn bushes for all....

where did the guys not doing the marshy bit go then ?

Eldron, I am sure that you are not going to get a 100% success rate but your passing on the right works well for me and the other 65.769% of the riders and the Thank You at the end may also ensure that you will have a repeat performance at the next race.

As for the double lappers and merging of long and short distances, the problem and the solution rests with the organisers and causes unnecessary conflict. What we could do is change the mindset to one of that it is not the riders being passed or the passing riders fault this may reduce some of the tension.

The marshy bit was the first excursion off the tar road that ran next to the river (on your right) - to miss the marshy bit you simply had to keep riding straight on the tar road. The second and third excursions had marshalls.

Last year was a similar story - a few riders skipped the technical bits along the river by riding round the marshalls along the tar. The marshalls couldn't abandon their posts and couldn't rmember all the rider's number so they got away with it.

@river rat - agreed. The semi open single track bits were fine but the tight single track near the end was bad (especially the tied grass bits - there was little to no place to overtake). Racers like me agonise about getting caught while we're rolling along behind back markers - being completely blown didn't help either :D

the last question is...was there markings along the marshy bit? :)
