My first bike was a 1983 Raleigh Burner, pretty similar to this one. It had back brakes when I got it which I had changed to normal brakes at Alan van Heerden Cycles in Corlett Drive. The bike was R149.00 brand new back then. I think I was the happiest kid on the block when I got it.

Fattest and siffist i have ever been

Spent too much time in the pub, then something in my head switched, i bought this bike from a co-worker and did my 1st argus, i am pretty sure that cycling actually saved my life.

For me it was in the early eighties - I was maybe 7 years old - and my Dad got me a BMX from the Hyperrama in Blue Route.

I loved that bike. We actually had a homemade BMX track slightly above the Old Bakery in Main Road, Lakeside C.T.

Anybody out there remember that?

I always wanted a chromolly Diamond Back, with a kick ass Number Plate on the front, and those big, flat, shinny BMX pedals. There was a shop in Main Road Wynburg that used to stock the coolest BMX stuff.

I actually fell super hard on that track trying to impress a girl with my dirt jumping skills. I ramped. I inverted. I landed on my back. I tried not to cry.

And I will never forget the look on that eight year old girls face; it was like " Aha... so thats the kind of stuff I can get these monkey boys to do to try to impress me... Mmmmmmm.. I must remember that!"

Bikes. From a kid's toy to a grown up's passion.

I had bikes before, but this is the baby that keeps me riding. I've owned her since the mid 80s, and I think she's still my favourite despite the later Colnagos and Victoria hanging on my wall. (What a *** picture!)

Everytime I see a BMX from the 80's I can actually smell them. I loved cycling in the 80's. I had way more guts then.

Started on my mate's Giant Alias in Majik Forest 2 years ago, did the MTB Argus 24km (that seemed like a long distance) on it a few months later. He was on a Anthem, but I did not even spot the difference as they were both Giants

Had a chopper as a kid in the UK, a messed up thing donated by one of my dad's many brothers I think!

Had a cheapie BMX when we got to South Africa (folks way of bribing an unhappy kid!).

Then a road bike (parents flipped when they found out we were riding miles away from home!).

Then a Bomber to get to high school on (well, the bus stop anyway!).

A Raleight Aggressor in the mid 90's

And on a GT Avalanche now. This will be kept, repsrayed and given to my partner when I upgrade.

Hopefully a dual suspension by this time next year!

I read somewhere in the week that cycling is a very emotional experience for riders. This thread sure proves the depth of love that we have for our bikes, and for riding.
