Can a heavier wheelset be better than a lighter one?

Hi all - I fear I may have made an error in purchase

I bought a new wheelset for my 29er - ztr arch rims with hope hubs and was considering what tyres to put on...I finally decided on the new crossmark ust tyres as I went for durability for the epic....

so today I pick them up and they felt heaview than the current wheelset(standard wheels) on the giant anthem x 29er (bontrager xd tyres and same rotors and cassette)...now it wont be be much but it certainly feels heavier...have I made an error, should I have gone for lighter tyres such as schalwbe and lost some durability :-(

I haven't had the previlage to ride the epic, but my logic tells me you want as heavy duty tires as possible. You already have the bullitproof hope hubs. That extra bit of weight will be worth it in the end.

probably not because those ztr arch are probably more efficient, the read up on bike radar reckons the giant 29er wheels flex a little and anyway I would rather have reliability over weight 10 mins to fix a flat you cant make that no matter what weight the wheel is

I would rather use the reliabity as a mindset to know you can hammer it when you need to.

No ways, went that route a while ago and much prefer having heavier tyres and peace of mind when riding. If you pucture with a UST setup it is so messy trying to sort it out as well as the time lost and having to get back into your rhythm once you are on your way again.

You made the right choice, you won't have any regrets. "Better" is so relative, remember strength and function over a couple of grams any day of the week. Now get out there and ride those wheels

PS...I just bought my second set of Hope Pro II's with ZTR rims, first ones are still prefect...there is a reason why they keep on coming tops on almost all mtb diciplines XC/Marathon/Trail wheel reviews in the MBUK mag...they are very unbiast and if something is k@k, will say so.

I love my ZTR wheels, I had a 26 inch olympic set, they did 9000km and they still running strong, obviously, a few bearing sets have been through them, but they work.

My 29er Arch wheels have been great, they built(tensioned) a little light for me, so they flex a little more than they should but tighten them up they won't go wrong.Currently, running schwalbe evo but going to swop to protection casings.

I think the weight is coming from your tyres more than the rim setup. You won't be sorry, look at Kevin in the Epic, cost them huge, there is no way the 300g more would accumulate and equal time lost by carrying the weight.

Think about it like this... 80 kg system - 320 watts... 4 watts per kg...

80.5kg system - 322 watts ... 4 watts per kg..

2 watts translates to 0.00005 km/h delta in average speed, on your 80 kg system, which in an 3 hrs of riding, might be noticable...

thanks - yeah thats the issue I am trying to address...I have no doubt the rims and hubs are better...I was worried that the tyre choice would negate any advantage gained....seems I am feeling a bit better about my chioce then..

one last question...does the full ust tyre mean u dont need sealant? I have put in as rather safe than sorry but the review I read seem to suggest sealant is not needed or is a bit of overkill - I think in a race like epic u need the sealant for incase??

No no no....you defnitely need sealant...UST means

1.Thicker sidewalls on tires making them harder to cut...not impossible though...you pay for it in weight but worth it in my opinion

2.Generally fits tighter giving a better seal than non UST tyres

Did a conversion on Stan's rims two nights ago...very easy with UST tyres...tires sealed first shot with a footpump

Tape rim with yellow Stan's rim tape and insert Stan's specific valve...

Lightly apply some soapy water...helps with seal and getting tight fitting UST tyres on

Put tyre on and add sealant

Pump up very hard and shake wheels
