I disagree.

 

SA Mtb stage races will come out tops relation to organisation in particular. All involve (community, cops, land owners, motorists) get behind these events. These events involve serious negotiation and management skills - all of which CSA lacks.

 

Relating to lala land, I lived their for awhile, also a few other places, I have yet to find the perfect place.

A recipe for sucess (IMHO):

- Take the race through the outskirts of town where the traffic control is easier.

- Don't go through the centre of town on a Saturday or Sunday.

- Make sure you have EXCELLENT TV coverage (not the cell phone footage they are currently broadcasting. I have seen better quality pictures on YouTube)

 

Once the tour gains popularity THEN bring it to the people. The cycling fans will make an effort to go and watch no matter where it is.

How was it advertised, newspaper (Star Citizen, Beeld and and local Caxton newspapers such as Randburg Sun), radio (5FM, Highveld, 702, Jacaranda), light poles along the route, flyers handed out to businesses and private homes, mainstream news (SABC, ETv)

I think the attitudes of motorists is SICKENING! These weren't all day road closures, in that specific area the motorists would've been delayed by 5 minutes, that's IT! Who the f*** do they think they are driving through road closures and throwing their toys?

 

This is typical JHB motorist behaviour. Every day we see it, people cutting others off because they think they're the only ones who need to get where they're going, jumping red lights because they think it's ok, driving over 2 lanes because they feel they own the road.

 

Until the JMPD get off their fat arses and start enforcing the law, instead of hiding in the bushes, this type of rubbish is going to go on and on, and more pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers are going to die on our roads. This is a much wider problem than just a CSA stuff up, or the JMPD not showing up.

Fully agree - this is a much wider problem than the CSA or JMPD - but includes values and cultures of motorists in SA. The JMPD have a huge role in what it is today.

ROAD RESTRICTIONS FOR THE CELL C TOUR OF SOUTH AFRICA

 

GAUTENG ROAD RESTRICTIONS – 20TH FEBRUARY

 

The Cell C Tour of South Africa would like to forewarn drivers in the Gauteng and Tshwane areas about traffic congestion and road restrictions that will affect travellers during the Inaugural Tour of South Africa.

 

Please familiarise yourself with the map of Stage 2 of the event to ascertain the best route to travel prior to leaving home. The map is accompanied by a detailed road schedule and estimated time frame of when restrictions can be expected. The details for each stage may be found under the stages section for your convenience.

 

We are alerting you to the routes early with the intent of causing as little inconvenience as possible in relation to the Cell C Tour of South Africa.

Please note that these are rolling road restrictions and not total road closure, so you will be delayed in bursts of anything from 10 minutes to 45 minutes pending on the routes you choose.

Don't think that would have helped. I consider myself an informed person. I read two or more different newspapers a day. I live within 1km of the route. I have no recollection of seeing a notice like that. The only reason I know about the Tour and the route is that I spend time on the Hub.

I was the chairman of a cycling club until this weekend. The only notice I received through official channels regarding the event was a request for volunteers to help out - one week before the event.

the way motorists act didn't just change minutes before the tour started, it's common knowledge that motorists act like idiots the second they get behind the wheel, and yet loads of sporting events still managed to get completed in SA without problem... at the end of the day it would seem that CSA did not do enough to involve the communities the route passed through, they certainly failed in the marketing of the event and that in my opinion goes a long way in explaining todays fiasco!
