Red Light Runners?

Thought this was an '80s band led by Dexy.

ConfusedI had it pegged for a certain neighbourhood section that runners went through on the Amsterdam marathon.

Aaah' date=' Andrew, good to hear the voice of reason.

The big problem isn't that jumping reds (under the right circumstances) is dangerous - it definitely isn't.

The problem is the growing problem of roadrage, aggresion on the roads and how this effects cyclists.

Jumping red robots annoys some drivers who are stuck behind the robot. These are the same drivers that are annoyed by taxis overtaking on the pavement. They are also annoyed by cyclists riding in huge bunches, cyclists using hand gestures, cyclists swearing, throwing water bottles, cyclists littering etc etc.

Cyclists need to improve there attitude in general, especially the 'pack' mentality when 5+ guys are riding together.

Laws are written for the lowest common denominator, for instance most of us can safely drive at 140km/h on the motorway and pose no risk to other motorists.

Unfortunately others are less skilled and less able to handle higher speed, therefore a speed limit is set at which the vast majority can safely go on their way.

As soon as you start getting selective, say obeying the law sometimes you get problems.

Instead of looking at the bigger problem ie road rage etc break it down. What can you do to help? It might seem nothing but like I said earlier, I stopped at all the lights today and so did the taxis.

Change the way you do things, because you can't change other people.

This is my view.

If you are alone at 5 am in the morning on route to meet a bunch on the corner, Stop at a red light and if it is safe proceed, but come to a complete stop first.

If you are an A bunch group riding at 5am (20-30 riders) then it is NOT a safety issue. PLEASE STOP AND ADHERE THE RULES OF THE ROAD.

Whats the rush, it's a training ride. If you have to get to work on time ride earlier. There is simply no excuse!!!

I get the feeling that EVERYONE has a gripe with groups that skip the red lights and not your single riders on early morning training rides.

Secondly' date=' and I'm probably gonna get it for stating this, is why are only cyclists in ***?  What about runners and pedestrians!?

Runners and pedestrians don't have the same status on the road as  a motor vehicle. A bicycle is considered a motor vehicle.

Remember it's not the car you saw that will get you...it's the one you didn't.

Do not agree.  They are ROAD users.  Once again, are or aren't we vehicles.  According to a Metro cop I spoke to we are pedestrians!

No, that's why this debate is raging. We are classed with pedestrians as far as safety goes, but definately considered a motor vehicle. A few years back (ok, a good few) we cyclists had to pay license fees. This was scrapped because of logistics reasons.

Maybe this should come back. Pay license fees get a number plate and then we see who goes thru red lights!

Dude, the last time I mentioned this on a forum I was almost killed. I think it's a good idea then the traffic police can also issue fines that.

shaun, ok.  Ek verstaan.  But, in all honesty, if I go out at my usual time of 4:30, and I'm NOT on a lekker slow training ride, I will not stop at a red light if there are no cars!  At the moment I do stop when there are cars around, maar nie daai tyd van die oggend nie!!!

Personally I'm sick of pedestrians walking on the road when there are footpaths, I have seen four dead pedestrians in the last 12 months. Prior to that I had seen one in my entire life!

At least runners are looking where they are going and (generally) are not running across the road like it is some sort on game.

It must be bourne in mind most "culprits" are lycra clad cyclists on expensive bikes so they can afford to pay for licenses whereas those that need it for daily transport to get around, cant.
