  1. The only thing to add (although "Do it carefully not to hurt yourself." covers it) is to wear eye protection.
  2. 29'? That will never catch on. 29" might though.
  3. Yes, but what do you really think?
  4. Let me tell you a story, my imaginary friends... Two weeks ago, on an early morning training ride, my ride buddy and I rolled up to a red light at the back of Burgundy Estate, where we turn left to go to Plattekloof Road. There were some cars about, but it wasn't busy. My buddy showed no signs of slowing, but I made him. "Lead SA!", I said, "Do the right thing!". So we stopped and waited for the light to change. When it did, we rolled on, and in the short stretch to Plattekloof, some dumbass biatch in a Ford Focus (ROGUE1 WP) almost clipped my elbow. At the red light I politely (and I really do mean politely!) asked her if she didn't think that it had been a tad close. "Yes!," she said, "you moved out towards me!" Here's the irony: if we had treated the red light as a stop sign, I wouldn't have nearly had my elbow adjusted. Do I have a point? Yes I do. Rolling through a red light is not necessarily a dangerous thing to do, if you do it right. That means, no traffic about and being careful. If there is traffic about, behave as you would like that traffic to behave around you.
  5. You were supposed to go more general, not more specific. So, silly mammals would have worked, silly simians would have been ever better. Silly girl!
  6. silly persons
  7. I see what you did there!
  8. Cars are registered. The only way this idea could work would be if the hirer paid a deposit equal to the value of the wheels. Buy a second hand pair of wheels and sell them on when you are done.
  9. Well then, you won. I know that prolly looks like condescension, but really it is not. I will never win anything that involves pedalling, but hot damn, I love it!
  10. Despite the fact that you have seen fit to exclude me, I will comment anyway... We do this for fun. That's the only measure that really counts. It's not an easy thing to measure, but we all know whether we have had fun...and by the sound of things you did. Were you one of the guys I saw in a WWF jersey?
  11. Honestly, Dangle, I know you're just trying to help, but I really don't think that putting on gloves and running on your hands is a very helpful suggestion!
  12. This is for the big car in the fleet. It's a Pug 206 GTi. Where did you get two bikes from Caerus? My bike, Mrs bikemonster's bike, and son of bikemonster's bike. I think that the reason that Thule do not have many rivals (check out whispbar.co.za) is that Thule clearly have a lot of thought behind their products.
  13. So much of wrong!
  14. Reason for this (i.e., tow bar mounted racks being not an option) is that I do not have a tow bar. Tow bars can be added, but adding a tow bar is an expensive thing to do, looks ugly and the towbar mounted Thules seem to be the most expensive. Re: theft from 9103 - having looked closer at a 9103, it is of stouter construction than I thought so theft is not as much of an issue as I first thought. Thanks for the comments so far. Keep 'em coming!
  15. Hello My Imaginary Friends I'm considering getting Thule racks so I can take bikes along for the ride when the family heads out on a road trip over December. Tow bar mounted racks are not an option. That leaves the rack that mounts (oh my!) on the back of the family hatchback (Thule 9103) or some ProRider 591's to be added to the car's roof racks. The roof mounted racks will increase fuel usage, and I run the risk of driving into stuff with the bikes forgotten on the roof. The hatchback mounted carrier makes the hatch out of bounds, and makes theft more of a worry (it looks like a reasonably determined thief could just cut the straps and remove the carrier with bikes attached). Anything else to think about? Any non-Thule alternatives that don't require a towbar that are worth considering? Let me have the wisdom of the Hub massive...over to you! (Edited because WTF would 'two bar mounted racks' mean?)
  16. Top tip you say...try these: Climb onto your neighbour's roof and dangle a fish on a bit of string in front of his windows. He'll think his house is underwater. Girls. Too old to go on an 18 to 30 holiday? Simply get pissed, lie in a pit in your garden and shag every bloke who looks at you over the fence. Buy a television set exactly like your neighbours. Then annoy them by standing outside their window and changing their channel using your identical remote control. MOTORISTS. Pressing your 'fog lights' switch a second time after the fog has cleared will actually turn your fog lights off. Cheer loudly at 8.00pm each Saturday to fool the neighbours into thinking you have won the Lottery. Girls. Next time you feel like throwing a ball over-arm, don't, because you can't and it just looks silly. Just throw it girlie under-arm style, and no-one will laugh at you, or get hurt. Don't buy expensive 'ribbed' condoms, just buy an ordinary one and slip a handful of frozen peas inside it before you put it on. X-Files fans. Create the effect of being abducted by aliens by drinking two bottles of vodka. You'll invariably wake up in a strange place the following morning, having had your memory mysteriously 'erased'. Minor skin grafts can be performed on pigs by covering any cuts and grazes with thin strips of bacon. Save money on expensive personalised car number plates by simply changing your name to match your existing plate. - Mr. KVL 741Y, Don't waste money buying expensive binoculars. Simply stand closer to the object you wish to view. Avoid jet lag by simply taking an earlier flight, thus arriving fully refreshed and on time. Pass yourself off as Welsh by putting coal dust behind your fingernails and talking gibberish all the time, stopping occasionally to sing loudly, or set fire to someone else's house. Putting just the right amount of gin in your goldfish bowl makes the fishes' eyes bulge and cause them to swim in an amusing manner. Save time when crossing a one-way street by only looking in the direction of oncoming traffic. - D. Rogers, Hemel Hempstead When crossing a one-way street always look in BOTH directions in case a large blue furniture removal lorry is reversing the wrong way up the road. - D. Rogers, Hemel Hempstead General Infirmary Thicken up runny low-fat yoghurt by stirring in a spoonful of lard. Anorexics. When your knees become fatter than your legs, start eating cakes again. A next door neighbour's car aerial, carefully folded, makes an ideal coat hanger in an emergency. Hijackers. Avoid a long stressful siege and the risk of arrest, imprisonment or death by simply making sure you book a flight to your intended destination in the first place. Deter goldfish from having sex by throwing a small bucket of air over any that you catch in the act. An empty aluminium cigar tube filled with angry wasps makes an inexpensive vibrator. Sister S., Berwick Olympic athletes. Disguise the fact that you've taken anabolic steroids by running a bit slower. - B. Johnson, Canada Sweetcorn fans. Save money on loo paper by simply pouring the stuff straight down the pan. Pretend you`re a giant panda by giving yourself two black eyes, eating only bamboo shoots and refusing to have sex with the missus. Manchester United fans. Save money on expensive new kits by simply strapping a large fake penis to your forehead. It is now clear to all, as to your allegiance. Manchester United fans. Avoid an asymetrical bulge in your right arm by masturbating furiously with your left arm too. Avoid arguments with the missus about lifting the loo seat by simply pissing in the sink. Weedy fellas. Develop a right forearm like Arnold Schwarzeneggar by buying one of those Cindy Crawford workout videos. Smokers. Save on matches and lighters, by simply lighting your next fag from the butt of your last one. Vegetarians coming to dinner? Simply serve them a nice bit of steak or veal. Since they`re always going on about how tofu, Quorn, meat substitute etc `tastes exactly like the real thing`, they won`t know any difference. Invited by vegetarians for dinner? Point out that since you`d no doubt be made aware of their special dietary requirements, tell them about yours, and ask for a nice steak. Spice up your sex life by trying a bit of `rodeo sex`. Take your missus from behind and, holding on tightly to her jugs, call her by the wrong name. See how long you can `stay mounted` for. Drivers. Pressing the headlight switch for a second time dips the buggers. HGV drivers. When climbing a long hill at 20 mph, the lane to drive in is the LEFT ******* one. FOOL other drivers into thinking you have an expensive car phone by holding an old TV or video remote control up to your ear and occasionally swerving across the road and mounting the kerb. DRILL a one inch diameter hole in your refrigerator door. This will allow you to check that the light goes off when the door is closed. BOMB disposal experts' wives. Keep hubby on his toes by packing his lunchbox with plasticine and an old alarm clock. SAVE electricity by turning off all the lights in your house and walking around wearing a miner's hat. AVOID parking tickets by leaving your windscreen wipers turned to 'fast wipe' whenever you leave your car parked illegally. HOUSEWIVES. I find the best way to get two bottles of washing-up liquid for the price of one is by putting one in your shopping trolley and the other in your coat pocket. DON'T INVITE DRUG ADDICTS round for a meal on boxing day. They may find the offer of cold turkey embarrassing or offensive. OLD telephone directories make ideal personal address books. Simply cross out the names and address of people you don't know. WHEN reading a book try tearing out the pages as you read them. This saves the expense of buying a bookmark, and the pages can later be used for shopping lists. A TEASPOON placed in a glass on the back seat of your car makes a handy audible gauge for road bump severity. BUS DRIVERS. Pretend you're an airline pilot by wedging your accelerator pedal down with a heavy book, securing the steering wheel with some old rope, and then strolling back along the bus chatting casually to the passengers. SAVE petrol by pushing your car to your destination. Invariably passers-by will think you've broken down and help. LOSE weight quickly by eating raw pork or rancid tuna. I found that the subsequent food poisoning/diarrhea enabled me to lose 12 pounds in only 2 days. Avoid that devilish temptation to nibble at the chocolate bar in the cupboard or fridge by not buying the ******* thing in the first place, you fat bastards. Dyslexics. Try deliberately spelling words wrongly. This way at least you have a chance of spelling them correctly. Bearded men can obtain the appearance of an upper class Arctic explorer by simply applying Tippex to their beards, painting their noses blue, and cutting off a couple of toes. It never fails to impress the girls. Give up smoking by sticking one cigarette from each new pack up a fat friend's arse, filter first, then replacing it in the box. The possibility of putting that one in your mouth will put you off smoking any of them. Pretend to be Welsh by putting coal dust behind your ears, talking gibberish and singing all the time. The following morning you can create the effects of a hangover by drinking a thimble full of washing up liquid and banging your head repeatedly on the wall. Make bathtimes as much fun for kiddies as a visit to the seaside by pouring a bucket of sand, a bag of salt and a dog turd into the bath. PEOPLE whose surname is Toblerone should always take along an empty 'Toblerone' chocolate box when attending interviews for office jobs. This would save your potential employer the expense of having to make a name plaque for your desk, and therefore increase your chances of getting the job.
  17. FFS - if it's being sold by Glomail or Verimark, that's all you need to know: save your money. Those stores only ever sell garbage. But wait...there's more!
  18. I've worked it out. You're selling PowerBalance bands aren't you? It's OK. You can 'fess up. We're all friends here. Sort of.
  19. I've sold a number of things through the Hub...the last was a bike that left here 10 minutes ago. Yes, there have been some odd comments (like the numbnuts who questioned how I could ask R1,000 for an 80'sish Eddy Merckx when he bought a brand new bike for R1,000...in 1988), and some diversions (like a discussion on stereo speakers), but that's the fun of the Hub. Photograph your stuff, describe it accurately, price it right and it will sell. And you might even get to have some fun along the way. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!
  20. I'm also a great advocate of Fisan - I figure babies' nappies get worse than our bibs. Hell, I certainly hope so! I used to get back from long rides looking like this: ( * ) The ( and the ) being chafe marks on the outside of my butt. I cured it - I think! - by moving to a narrower saddle. Sounds like you might need to move a narrower saddle too. But it's a minefield. My prediction is that we will now have a bazillion posts telling you that this or that particular saddle is the answer. Unless the advice comes from somebody with the same shape butt and skeleton as you have, ignore them, for they speak from their *.
  21. Some bike computers do and some don't have cadence. A quick google tells me that some Atoms do and some don't.
  22. There's an awful lot of sanctimonious hand-wringing going on here. It seems to me that cutting risky behaviour is more important than than wearing a crash hat in reducing our risk when we cycle. Yesterday morning I saw two cyclists riding along the N7 between Bosmansdam Rd and the refinery at around 8:00 am, direction Malmesbury. Traffic was coming past them at 120km/h. But hey, there were both wearing the helmets so they were being perfectly safe. At issue here is not whether riding on the N7 was legal - it was a dumbass thing to do. On this morning's Durbanville fun ride, an experience cyclist who really ought to know better (and well known on the Hub) indulged in a spot of wily-waving and jinked right from the bunch I was in, almost being taken out by a passing VW Microbus. But it's OK, he was wearing a helmet. On any weekeday morning, on the N1 along Paarden Eiland you will see cyclists riding along (wearing helmets) in an 80 zone, where there is zero yellow line. Numbnuts! That said, I am in favour of wearing helmets, and I usually wear mine. But if I nip down to get a DVD of a summer's evening or take a ride around my neighbourhood, I don't always wear one. If it's even remotely gloomy though, I do make sure I have a light on my bike. (But not a bell.)
  23. Here's a (ahem!) heads up: If you have to ask somebody if something is style or something else, it's something else. That is all.
  24. Eh? What smut did I bring to this thread?
  25. Oh dear. Why **** up a nice thread by bringing religion into it? (edited for smelling pistake)
