  1. It's very simple. Each of us is individually rational and sensible. Everybody else, however, is a cretinous future organ donor. There. Sorted. Admin, you can lock the thread now, it's finished.
  2. No, it's a Trek. The 470 had a quill type headset and RSX 7 speed STI, so a bit of a dead end because shortly after Shimano moved to cassette type freehubs instead of screw-on free wheels and headsets changed to a-headsets. By dead end, I mean that it's a difficult bike to upgrade. Aim for R2,000 and see what you can get. Good luck.
  3. Tankman, while your method is aesthetically pleasing, does it guarantee that the chain will be long enough for the longest run that it needs to accommodate? I.e., the combination of largest sprocket used with the big blade? Of course, a person shouldn't cross-chain, but there is no guarantee that you won't find yourself using the biggest sprocket with the big blade in the heat of the moment.
  4. Measure the chain against the predecessor and use the same number of links as the previous chain had. For added cunning, make one of the links of the new chain a removeable link, so that you can take the chain off easily for cleaning.
  5. I don't read no stinkin' external linkin'! What? You mean there's more to the web than the Hub? Nobody ever told me that?
  6. Didn't Mavic have electronic shifting a lo-o-o-o-ong time ago? Yes...the wheel company.
  7. Funny. I'm in Cape Town and google works fine for me.

  9. Burn, heretic!
  10. Utter, utter balls! Nobody knows what colour anybody else is until well into the sale process. When it comes to buying stuff, there is only one colour: the green! Your mate prolly wants too much of the green for whatever he is selling. From time to time, racism does raise its unlovely head on the Hub, and when it does it gets slapped down pretty quickly. But as an excuse for why your mate's stuff is not selling? ROFLMAO!

  12. Run the **** away from any diet that has a person or place name in front of it, or or © behind it. Eat sensibly, eat balanced, cut down on processed food and minimise "empty" carbs (soft drinks and booze, sorry!). Generally weight that goes off fast is weight that comes back fast. As others have said, it's all about balance. But not about PowerBalance...that's a whole 'nother thread war.
  13. Usually you will get cramps if you are riding much fiercer or much further than you are used to. I've tried Mg supplements, but honestly, the best option is training right.
  14. Think about it this way... If you were riding over short, sharp corrugations and the rebound was at its slowest, you'd be hitting the next corrugation before the fork (or shock) had returned to its resting state. And the one after that would be worse still, so the fork would be more compressed with each corrugation. If you adjusted the fork to rebound as fast as possible, the fork would feel a bit like a pogo stick, returning to its resting state too fast for comfort, which might be great on corrugations, but less great on more rolling irregularities. So there is an element of compromise - too slow and the fork compresses, too fast and it feels harsh. You need to play around until you find a setting that feels right for your riding style and the terrain you are riding on.
  15. I'll bet he was one of those damn' singlespeed freaks. Luddites the lot of them! The good lord* gave us gears, we should use them, dagnabbit! * The good lord being, of course, Tullio Campagnolo.
  16. Let's drop the BS that carbon is this, steel is that, alu is another thing and ti is whatever is left. Yes, materials have default characteristics, but framebuidling technique has a bigger impact on ride characteristics than material choice, and changing tyre pressure has a larger impact still.
  17. Yeah, but which Fi:zik? I rode an Arione for a while, and it was never right for me. The Aliante was a lot better. Currently riding a narrow Pave, which is better yet, but I think it's the fact that the Pave is the right width for me that makes it work. As for the expense of trying lots of different saddles, that's what the Hub classifieds is for!
  18. Only as far as external observers are concerned!
  19. Horses have shoulders, so that doesn't help solve the riddle of whether bees have knees. Not only is this entomology, but the entomology of etymology!
  20. In a similar vein, I was thinking that for most people their "chocolate foot" is their right foot, so when they stop, the left foot goes down. With the left foot down, it made sense to put the grubby chain on the RHS, to avoid muck getting on one's clothes in the days when the bicycle was a means of transport for working persons. I don't think we can blame this on Tullio!
  21. No! Report the mofo! Even if all he gets is a warning letter, we can hope it makes him a bit thoughtful. And if not, there will be a mark against him if he ever does something so stupid in future. More importantly, I'm glad you're ok.
  22. I couldn't give a rat's ass. Religious magazines are right up there with celeb gossip magazines, it's all just ways of extracting money from the hard of thinking. But I'm not personally offended by their presence on a magazine rack.
  23. The whole Woolies/Christian magazine thing is a storm in a teacup, which I suspect was caused by sensationalist reporting. If the headlines had read "Woolies decides to drop titles which nobody ever buys" there would have been no reaction. As compared to "Woolies bans Christian magazines from their stores!" Personally I'm glad that there are these Christian magazines. Gives us ugly folks a magazine cover that we might one day appear on. So far they haven't called me, but I figure it's just a matter of time.
  24. The irony is strong in this one!
  25. I bet that takes them by surprise. You must be pretty pooped tired by the end of a ride!
