  1. I have a Spez that had the same noise around 500km in. I pulled the fork out and cleaned and lubed the headset and the problem went away. I did notice the lube was sparse around the headset bearing and it was caked with dust that was the cause of the noise.
  2. 62 is young. Condolences to his family.
  3. I am on-board with the perp receiving their due reward, but let's be honest about the failures of the justice system in SA. I am not saying that they should get away with it, but from my perspective the hassle to pursue justice just isn't worth it anymore in this country. I wish it weren't so and maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but I've elected to just get on with my life. A car or a bike or a cell-phone is replaceable. First prize is for the criminals to be dealt with always though.
  4. This is my argument. The recovered stolen goods will 99% of the time not be in the original condition it was at the time it was stolen, and I'm pretty sure the insurance company will probably find a way to avoid paying out the claim for damages. I can't verify that assumption, but I've had issues with insurance squirming out of their responsibilities before. Hence I don't have Tracker on my vehicles and don't pay more for insurance either.
  5. Just insure it. Claim the loss if stolen and walk away from any possible recovered bike. It shouldn't be any more complicated. The hassle isn't worth it otherwise.
  6. Make sure they have stock before you doll out the cash. Buddy of mine responded to one of these ads they posted a while ago and decided to drive all the way to Malmesbury only to be told "no stock" and "won't be getting new stock in again". . .
  7. I normally ride from Sunningdale north to Melkbos, do a few laps of Duynefontein and head home again for a 2 hour or so ride in the mornings. I ventured south a while back for a change of scenery and as I took the cycle path heading south by Dolphin Beach hotel I heard that explosive decompression of my rear tyre as I encountered this glass you speak of. It was still very much night time as the sun was still a while away from peeking out under the blankets of darkness. I turned around and thought to keep riding as far as I could before the inevitable hike-a-bike started. I made it all the way home on a tyre about 50% deflated. It was at that bit where the cycle path dips below the road level pretty much making a rider somewhat hidden from view of the road. I have resorted to sticking to the Melkbos run and actually enjoy the regularity of it. I did a ride to PE earlier in April and as I was turning by the filling station I saw a cyclist pass me and head on to the N1. On a whim I opted to follow him and lost him by the time I made it to the lane heading south. I decided to continue on to the N1 and from there I just followed it to the bit where you are riding beneath the elevated highway where I navigated to the V&A and then I ended up turning back north again at the top of Suikerbossie after deciding I wasn't in the mood for Chapmans. That was an awesome ride and I wish I could do it again sometime, but not at the rate people get jacked between PE and the V&A. Such a pity.
  8. The only people still getting KOM are the ones riding full fat eebs but not stating as such on Strava. They're of the same ilk as the people who will straightline a berm to cut milliseconds of their PB on an otherwise fun bit of trail, and in so doing miss the entire point of being on their bike in the first place.
  9. In days gone by I would drive to the beach for a surf and leave my car keys on the rear tyre like all the other surfers did. Or I would go and leave all my gear on the rocks along the point at Vicbay and go surf for 4 - 5 hours at a time and no-one would even approach my belongings. How times have changed.
  10. At least ProBikeGarage can still update from the API. That's the only real reason I use Strava, to log miles on my bikes and components to know service intervals and what was done last, when, by whom, on what etc. I updated to the Pro Subscription shortly before I purchased my Garmin, so I'm not sure I'll be renewing when it expires next year.
  11. all the while, the Premier of Ontario wants to kill cycle paths in the city because they cause congestion. . . https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/18/ontario-toronto-bike-lanes
  12. too true lol. two things I actually miss in my Isuzu are a reverse camera and an auto box. N1 mornings and a manual box don't play well together.
  13. must be a Ranger thing, needing a camera to reverse
  14. While on the topic of flat vs. clips. So I had a crash a few weeks back after landing a smallish jump on a blind trail. First run commit and I ended up too slow to clear the gap and got bucked on the knuckle. My right foot lost momentary connection to the pedal and slipped off and got pinned between the pedal and the ground, bending my foot the wrong way. I'm still of the opinion I at minimum fractured it. First road ride back again today. Anyway, I'm thinking if I was clipped in I was going for the ride over the bars and straight to the ER via medevac as I was not exactly on a groomed trail at the time. So now I'm trying to decide if clipped is better than flat or should I stay with flats while riding trails.
  15. I concur what @Chadvdw67 says about Spez 2FO. They stick like glue on the pedal, are comfortable as an all-day ride shoe, and still look stylish off the bike. I have a high bridge on my foot, so I have some fun getting my foot into a shoe, and these shoes are no different, but just loosening the laces somewhat halfway down the shoe sorts that problem out. I also appreciate the elastic between the laces to hold them in place during a ride. The soles are super grippy and long lasting, and from what I've seen on YouTube reviews, they are the closest thing to 510's in terms of grip. Only semi downside I can find is that back section is somewhat loose after a few years of riding and on first putting them on, they feel like they could do with more support back there, but honestly, after the first couple of steps after putting them on that feeling goes away. I may go through another season with my current pair before retiring them for a new pair. TLDR; just buy them already!
  16. I don't notice any scratching on my tailgate after a ride. I get home and remove the mattress and haven't noticed any damage. But I have heard of scratching after long term use of the tailgate pad being left there. I would still remove it after a ride if I used one.
  17. I use this. works great.
  18. It actually reads more like Chat-GPT wrote it. CoCT must cycle from town to Melkbos using the cyclepath and then back again without a SAPS escort. Then as Zebra hopes, maybe they will fix that up. But honestly, for how long before it returns to its old manner of disfunction.
  19. I see they forgot to add DO NOT - get bitten. There is a serious snake bite antivenom shortage in SA for the last two or so years, and one of the main guys providing snake venom for antivenom production, Dingo Dinkelman, passed away on 26 October from complications brought on after being bitten by a green mamba. He was allergic to snake venom after he got bitten by a black mamba a couple years earlier. This antivenom shortage means that the likelihood of treatment by means of antivenom in SA is slim, and no pets are being treated for snake bite because of it, so if your beloved labradoodle gets bitten they will likely be euthanised. In short, be careful out there and look where you step.
  20. I would turn that gap into a triple for sure. I heard my domestic worker chat to some guys doing garden maintenance outside my house yesterday and they were telling her they caught THREE BIG SNAKES ! ! ! just outside my boundary wall on Tuesday. 'tis the season to be wary . . .
  21. And with Tygerberg hosting the start of Cape schlEpic next year does this mean they will follow suit and also start charging some stupid tariff to ride their trails - (only 2.5 of which are actually any fun, one of which they don't even maintain or build - I digress)?
  22. According to the T's&C's it seems riding alone will cost R5000.00 after which you forfeit your membership. Only after a 100 executive members are signed up can you invite a guest. I am of the opinion that this farm actually hates on mountain biking. funny that seeing as how unappealing the trails on that farm are in general. I have ridden there before and it was an absolute yawn.
  23. It seems like Christo Wiese is recuperating the money he lost in the Steinhoff debacle from mountain biking and clay pigeon shooting. I mean, they even say you get to shoot "real bullets" and all. What's not to love?
  24. This solution is cheap and effective and easy to carry even while cycling.
