  1. So a few years ago in the 'burb where I live there was an open field across the street that bordered against open veld towards Melkbos. It wasn't long for Port Jackson to take over that field, which became hiding place for burglars. Garden Cities, the owners of the land were asked time and again to clear the field, to no avail. One morning the message was shared on the street committee that one of the houses opposite the field was burgled in broad daylight, and no surprises where the burglars came out from. That same day I volunteered on the street committee to go buy a can of petrol and fix the port Jackson problem once and for all. The next day that field saw no more port Jackson trees growing there. Just saying, you know 😉
  2. Novel idea but impractically implemented in South Africa given the propensity for corruption. The flip side to your proposal is the absolute spike in false fines and convictions once the police get incentivised to do their work. They simply can't be trusted.
  3. It looks like the perp only had one round in that mag because the slide opened after he fired the gun, and if you slowly look at the footage you can see him waving the gun with it loudly indicating that no more rounds were available. At the very least, he would not be able to fire off another shot without first clearing the jam if he did have more rounds. More than enough time for a competent carrier to end this before it got out of hand, but alas, cyclists don't carry.
  4. After the road gap on Conties Freeride we came across this spoor yesterday morning. Looks to be Aardvark. There's a resident duiker living there as well, and I've seen rooikat and bat-eared Fox there before.
  5. My chest has been struggling with mucus on and off since around October last year. I'm so used to it now I've accepted it as a normal part of life. I haven't seen any doctor but suppose I should at some point.
  6. I was losing my mind looking for the link, which other than yours and Morne I haven't seen elsewhere. I'm getting old, don't mind me.
  7. I suppose this new website is reserved for Bikehub Premium subscribers . . .
  8. I haven't really been watching this year. I caught some of the last days, and watched the final day on YT. All I can say of what I saw is that I have a newfound respect for the people who do this type of riding. I'm not sure I'd make it through maybe stage 2, and then, only just. For Matt and Tristan to pull of what they did coming back from nearly 2 minutes down to winning by almost a minute is absolutely mind blowing. Well done.
  9. For some sh!t$ and giggles go buy a new toilet brush and shove it in the dishwasher when you know wifey is about to unpack it. Guaranteed $h1t-fest of note.
  10. I took my bike to the LBS for a intermediate service two weeks ago. The rear hub needs replacing and due to stock it wasn't done. I was eventually charged R175 for wash and lube service only.
  11. I wonder if the prize money will also be "shortened" for the elite ladies
  12. I was planning on going until a mate who's been told me it involves a full day of just standing around hoping the weather allows riding and that the riders do their own thing, not following any real plan. They basically just party at the riders tent and you stand around on the hill, far from the action, waiting to see people ride. I attended one of the Hellsend open days last year, and although the trails were good, I feel they were overpriced for what I paid, and there wasn't even any cooldrinks or water on sale anywhere. A day at the Hoogekraal Leatt Skills Park is more fun. I'll rather save my money and watch the videos on YouTube. Edit - And traffic is a beeatch apparently getting in and out.
  13. I watched the elite men and noticed very few spectators spread along compared to previous years at Meerendal.
  14. I was driving to work one dark, rainy morning. I was in the right lane indicating that I was changing lanes. I look in the left side mirror and just see a string of lights. It looks clear so I proceed to change into the left lane. Suddenly I see a hand in a glove slapping my left window. I soil my undies and then notice the motorcycle. I wind down the window to apologise to the rider who was lane splitting. He's screaming at me about nearly killing him and how blind I am for not looking. By then we've come to a stop. I point at my mirror and ask him to look and point out the motorcycle among the ocean of headlights shining at me in the dark and rainy gloom. He looked and rode off.
  15. I'm just frustrated at the fact that we are in this position. And seeing inaction (at face value) is frustrating. More common sense prevails in comments by others about the reason for inaction, and I digress, their point is valid. It just gets highly agitating when it's so close to home I can ride to the scene in maybe 3 - 5 minutes. Mates of mine are doing daily walks in the same area and now they're afraid of doing that. And this is my gripe with allowing these buckets of excrement pretending to be human to do so they please. Now I'm contemplating the purchase of a Pew Pew device because of this.
  16. what's your point? There is a distinct difference between being thrown from your bike onto tar and being pounced on by two assailants, and just standing there with near zero attempt in protecting your property. In the one, the victim was injured and already at a deficit with two men on top of him. In the other, the victim chose to do nothing.
  17. I live just to the North West of that location in the estate and ride on Berkshire over the R27 to the West Coast cycle path regularly. Last year someone in the area left their garage open and their bike got stolen. Security found it the next day in Happy Valley stripped to pieces for parts salvage. This area is becoming dodgy. Living in the estate is blinding me to the "outside" because none of that happens inside, but outside is a different kettle of fish entirely.
  18. I think it was around Wood Dr. and Heritage Dr. in Sunningdale. I'm guessing the perps came up from Dunoon.
  19. Cyclist got mugged again in Sunningdale this morning and robbed of his bicycle and other personal valuables. VID-20260312-WA0005.mp4
  20. I'm calling BS on this. The guy on the back was trying unsuccessfully to draw something out of his pocket and manages to then still take the bike and escape without any objection. Has society honestly become so weak minded to just let people do what they want with no resistance? That is pathetic on behalf of the little girl in the blue jacket. Where have all the men gone?
  21. To be fair, he needs motor assist to haul those tyres around the route. The rolling resistance on that rubber is horrendous. I also looks like he rides a Levo SL, which has a smaller capacity motor and much smaller battery than the full fat bikes, so he either has a range extender or had to stop for new batteries at some point(s).
  22. I started way back as is my custom. Still, this year I felt that way too many people were just riding oblivious to their surroundings. Folks were just swinging left or right whenever they felt the need to stop, with no warning to the riders around them. I had one chap, Ryno, who decided on a whim to pull left and stop and very nearly clipped my front wheel in the process. Another time on approach to the Smitswinkel climb a lady on her e-mtb was riding very slow on the extreme left, and as I passed her she suddenly swerved and nearly smashed my bars. She was faffing with her phone which she had mounted on her bars and was paying no attention to the riders. And that was pretty much the theme for the day. I encountered way too many such sketchy moments yesterday, and that was a first for me. Other than that the day was good. My standout moment was passing a chap who was on his 41st tour and meeting another old timer on Chapman's doing his first tour and he was blown away by seeing Chapman's for the first time. He was dumbstruck, and with good reason. It was exceptionally beautiful yesterday. Those moments stood out for me. Maybe next year my legs won't explode in Hout bay.
  23. I also went to collect the most overpriced paper bag I've ever had to carry. At least I got a fresh pair of gloves, rain jacket and water backpack from First Ascent at good prices so that I could warrant having to carry that very expensive paper bag. My daughter was stoked that I saved the ghost pops for her.
  24. I see the wind is going to be pumping something fierce around the turn on the Peninsula, so I'm going on a beer run. No use trying for a good time. Rather just have a good time.
  25. In a car. At least that's how I get to town. From there the peninsula is your oyster. Heck, the only place you don't have to drive to from Tableview side is pretty much Melkbos in the north and Paarden Island to the south. Cruising over the N7 is possible but ill advised.
