  1. Take the trail we were riding as an example. About a third of the way down I was still on the group, but then the trail has a slightly upwards trend, just enough to make it so that you need to take some pedal strokes to keep your speed. Throw in some not so efficient jumps at some odd places that require speed, which is lost because of the ascending nature of the track at that point, and the assisted bikes were able to accelerate away, hit and clear the jumps, and leave me in their proverbial dust just trying to hold on to the train, never mind attack the jumps. I faltered on both objectives. I could not clear any of the jumps nor keep up with the group. E-bikes make trail riding more fun in that way, to me at least. It's not about needing all the power in the world, its about having some extra kilowatts available when the legs say NO!
  2. Contrary to popular opinion, e-bikes make trail riding so much more fun. I ride with some mates who have a variety of flavours, ranging from Levo SL, Kinevo and others, and they ride like your run of the mill enduro bike with the added benefit of allowing laps. A few weeks ago we did the Bloemendaler and they did laps while I tried to keep up with my analogue bike. On the second lap I got given some push-assistance from the back going up again and it made the climb relatively painless. On the descent I lost them ahead of me by the second corner. Putting the bike in turbo mode on the down just gives an unbelievable level of power whenever you need to pedal to get back to speed, which is something you'd expect from a super fit athlete. I'm tempted myself. By comparison I was in the red all the way down trying to follow but I simply couldn't keep the pace. On average I reached the bottom around 8 seconds slower every time.
  3. I rode the Daaler two weekends ago and it was really running good. I forgot how much fun that line is. It needs a couple bigger jumps though ( hint hint nudge nudge wink wink to the TMTBC )
  4. I was riding up to 5 mornings in the week. Then on election day I found myself flipping into a hole while jumping in the wind. From there it was recover from all the hurt the landing part inflicted. Then the bike broke. Then the rain started smacking the Cape like it was being paid to do so. Then I got sick. Then I got sick again. Then I got sick agaaaaaain. This is really getting old now. It's mid August and I am wondering when I can get out on the bike in the morning again. Back to average 200km / week from less than 10.
  5. Valid point. I heard of a chap in a Landy Disco having a hole shot in the bonnet of his Landy by a taxi driver on the road past Dunoon in Cape Town. On that same road one morning I was in the left lane, waiting for the traffic to move when a car passed me in the yellow lane. The car made contact with my left rear side and the driver got out and started shouting at me. Next thing two taxis pulled up and the drivers got out and also started screaming obscenities at me despite the car driver who banged into my Isuzu. I just stared at them and said nothing. Picking a fight right there is a foolish errand. The "damage" to my bakkie was rubbed off with my thumb once I reached my destination because the side mirror left some black marks on the paintwork by the rear wheel. No dent, no scratch.
  6. Glad nie. Hou net nie van beemers en taxi's nie. 🤣
  7. You also get the taxi that will turn right from the center lane that goes straight while you're waiting to turn. What I do then is a classic Verstappen move by straightening my turn and forcing the taxi to go straight beside me until they're entering the oncoming lane, unable to turn right because I'm occupying that space. At the last millisecond I make my turn. The downside is that by then my heart rate is well and truly going berserk and might be close to max. tempo. Not a healthy habit. My thoughts also go very dark right about then and that sets the mood for the rest of the day. I'm actually trying to avoid getting into it with them because I'm always a willing contender who will gladly engage in combative behaviour. Not a good space to be at all.
  8. Yesterday I had a guy in his X3 come screaming up behind me flashing his lights at me to get out of his way. Instead of moving to the left I decided to stomp on my brake pedal and almost collected the offending Beemer in my load bin. Needless to say he stayed well clear of me for the rest of the drive until we reached Melkbos from the N7. I don't play nice with people on a power trip.
  9. Got floored by flu last week and ended up at the doc for a prescription to get the chest cleared up. While there he decided to book me for a PSA screening and other age typical checks. Apart from a slightly elevated cholesterol count at the time, everything else came back normal, including the PSA result. I think I might go visit a dermatologist to check one or two spots on my face and back. I've got a history of sunburn from being a surfer, and riding in the sun in summer doesn't help. I pray that your dad beats his kidney cancer.
  10. I've had a couple of pairs of MX Fox gloves. Don't be fooled, they also only last one season before unraveling quite dramatically. I'm on a pair of Spez MTB gloves now and they seem to be holding upn better. Also have a pair of Fox Ranger shorts and they have held up well on the seams but start to look tatty not long after new. And anyone who thinks Leatt is expensive (not saying they're not highly priced) should compare Troy Lee Designs. Now that is mad expensive.
  11. line choice
  12. I have DUB 170mm on my Stumpy EVO. They work fine for me in rocky terrain with very few pedal strikes. I've got the bike at 63.5° head angle and it still just chugs along fine. With regards to removing the cranks, that's when I visit the LBS. I don't need to do it often enough to justify the effort and pain.
  13. got myself a lekker torque wrench from them at half the price that TakeEVERYTHING was advertising that same wrench for.
  14. My take on this is that Santa Cruz got taken over by new management, and this meant the original relationship built up over decades was essentially over. See it as a corporate takeover, and the star of the old show is no longer the star in the eyes of the new executives. They want to rebrand themselves and gather together a very talented, younger new crew who appeals to the new generation. From a pure economics perspective I can't fault that. From a more human perspective, that leaves a sour taste in the mouth, and if I were Jackson and co. I'd quietly be wondering when the day will come that they also get dropped. In the fight between loyalty versus dollars, the dollar is always going to win, regardless of who ends up bleeding at the end of the fight. I wish Greg all the best in the sunset of his stellar career as a DH racer and for being such a fantastic ambassador for the sport and for SA as a nation despite not many pleb saffas knowing who he is.
  15. I had the privilege of hearing Droo's compressor in the week. (He gave my Stumpy some TLC - thanks Droo 😎) It really is quiet and a worthy investment to make at not a bad price.
  16. I only know the name Tim Brink from reading so many cycling magazines back when they were still a thing and I always found his views to be from someone who has a deep love and understanding of cycling regardless of the discipline. His loss leaves a void. My condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
  17. No, Lyne. Soooooper sexy though. Can't wait to go for a spin on them. Amp HD mullet set with the new Hi-Per Hubs. Very stealthy hub at the back. Very quiet as opposed to the obnoxious humming of the Rapidé rear hub. Both are awesome, but right now I'm thinking the Lyne is 😎.
  18. And with the communications ministry being a total shambles with bribery the order of the day, and even Elon Musk finding it near impossible to trade in the country of his birth, I'm pretty much not surprised that we don't have these first world features here in SA.
  19. only when he's not being pushy in his Ford Ranger
  20. thanks, I will give it a go and see later this arvie. I have a new wheelset incoming.
  21. Hey @Christofison, is there somewhere to checkout the route for the race this year? I haven't ridden it yet and am keen, but I'm not sure if I will do the FULL or the LITE.
  22. I had have no problems seating a tyre with one of these. And I ride Maxxis 2.40" on DD / DH casing rubber. I don't own a compressor and I seat the tyre with a cannister, deflate the tyre to add sealant and then pump it with the trusty floor pump. Works every time.
  23. What an amazing stage. Big kudos to everyone, but Tadej Pogacar just put on a masterclass.
  24. So Tokai it is then . . .
