  2. i'd be careful, rad ... your favourite nit-picker might just kick some serious dust in your eyes ... i remember a time when she was doing lots of ridescos she needed the prize money for a new bike - i believe she's got the bike - for a while now. cat-i2010-02-24 13:20:12
  3. you missed the point. i'd rather ride with friends, or pick rides that i really enjoy, than having to run 15 kays or ride 50+ events just so that i can get a better seeding - i don't ride for the good seeding, i ride because i enjoy it, and if a ride doesn't appeal, for whatever reason, i won't do it. i've done sabie preride last year and will not do the main ride again - the preride was just SO much more enjoyable. open, free, uncongested singetrack, no-one walking up hills on the best lines, no-one walking in front of you on juicy bits or downhills .... i know i'm in the minority here, so i'll step off the soap box and leave this thread to the people who'd like to compare their seedings
  4. i found a remnant of an old cycleland next to malibongwe, it runs all the way from republic till long after the randburg high school .... its the road crossings that's dangerous. cars from behind you that just turn left and cut you off, cars from the fron that just turns right in front of you, cars at traffic circles that just pretend that you're not there. and if car and bike collides, bike will come last. there's a lot of education to be done to both cyclists and motorists, that might save more lives than cycle lanes. until then, i just pretend i'm invisible.
  5. hanlie booyens is a 32.5 yolanda speedy is a 19,75 nicky booyens (who won the swazi thingy a few weeks ago) is a 50 samantha oosthuizen is not there (or i can't spell her name)
  6. hahahaha dirty you KNOW i do! i'm no raodie, 5 km is just enough time to give the roadies chance to get to the singletrack before me so i guess i have 2 options: - spend more time on the roadie bike, so that i can get to the singletrack first - spend more time on the mountain bike - but NOT on races
  7. on roadie rides, being underseeded ccan be fun - in a deranged sort of way. i very much enjoyed the bunch-chasing on sunday's ride. possibly because this event is just the right size - not too big, like the argus, so that there's no way to pass crowds, and not too small, so that there's no-one to help with the bunch-chasing. but the wrong seeeding on MTB-events is just painfull ... if you're stuck you're kind of stuck i guess any attempt is better than nothing, though ...
  8. it does - it's difficult enough as it is on singletrack - which is why i've been doing less & less of these races. if i now have to start right at the back and having to fight my way through even more crowds, i'll have to rethink why i ride ... or race .... i'll rather spend my time and money on places and rides where the singletrack is uncongested ... ride2rhodes, xc races, if i have to race, or simply riding with friends. i will never win events, but i'm not going to spend money on events if i'm not going to enjoy the ride
  9. 73.42 - i'm a total rookie aaaah maybe they just added up the results? like if there's 2 events, then maybe they've just added the 50 and 60 ... oh no, that would have gven 110 ... confused
  10. oooooo take the bike to groenkloof this weekend! don't wait!!!!!!
  11. my experience is that mountain bikes are easier to learn on; they also are more forgiving. last year, a colleague borrowed a bike from me to do the 94.7 on. the first few rides was very wobbly. she tried the roadie bike, but decided on the mountainbike ... and within a few weeks she was riding in the spruit with confidence and a big smile. good luck, enjoy the journey !
  12. hey, zoo, sounds like you're becoming a true mountainbiker - your roadie buddies are gonna miss you! next up: thursday night? cat-i2010-02-21 11:41:32
  13. marathons are 70-80 km, endurance-events for most. not that fast. big fun, you will be tired afterwards. xco are short laps (5-6 km) over relatively technical terrain. different number of laps for different categoriews. this is fast and furious and fun. full-speed all the way. very tired afterwards.
  14. see? there you insulted my bike ... but it's mine and i ride it, so doesn't matter what you think. the point i was trying to make is ... dont let 'not be ashamed of' be one of the specs. for me it's more important that i like riding the bike
  15. a rule that i learned a long time ago - is when boards are blue, no cycle, boards are green, allowed to cycle. didn't confirm this - maybe there are legal people out there who knows?
  16. aaaawwwwww wolfie get well soon, man!!
  17. my backwheel is backwards at the mo'. bike shop said it's got more grip that way, other way it's got more speed. i never thought i rode well enough to feel the difference in tyres. the back one is a kenda nevegal, fitted backwards. was in fountains weekend before last, when it was still very muddy. the tyre just never slipped!! don't know if it was the fact that it was (a) the neveal, (b) the fact that it was wrong way around or © simply bacuse i ride that good. personally i won't go with ©, though edit: talking MTB tyre here ... cat-i2010-02-12 14:15:51
  18. oh no! heal up soon .... post details when you have? about the bike as well ...
  19. no - but thx. i dont think bikes get any cheaper than my hardtail .... i like the bike and i need a reliable bike for the trip - also something that i'll be comfortable on, there's quite a bit of distance and a lot of vertical ascent. the hardtail and trance has exactly the same components on, surely the trance's frame is heavier? so components won't be the thing. wheels may be, i won't have to spend anything by swapping wheels - i'm definately not planning on spending 15k on a bike, but even if, then it sounds like a better deal ... i'm using the hardtail very often, so new components would never be wasted. i'm not selling it on that side, there's still a lot of life in that bike. i'm also flying from katmandu to lhasa, so if you can get it there, then i'd still have to get it to lhasa and pay excess anyway - so if you cost me 2k, and getting it to lhasa ia another 1k, and i want to bring it back at another 2k, then i'd rather do without all the luxuries and make sure i fit in the allowed baggage - i've hiked for 5 days in the berg with 12 kgs, it didn't include bike tools, but it did include food and pots and stove, which i wont take now, so 12 kgs is doable - i'd just have to pack very precisely, then ... cat-i2010-02-08 16:40:54
