  1. Agree with you, about going to extreme (minimal and maximalist). I'm now transitioning into Saucony Freedoms (4mm drop). I pronate severely with my right foot where as my left foot is neutral. I can use 8mm drop neatral shoes, but after 400km they are shot. I tried Adidas UltraBoost stability - that made my right foot happy, but my "correction" is too much for my left knee. I found with the 4mm everthing is happy and with the Freedoms I have enough cushioning as well..
  2. My longest week(s) also in the region of 7-8 hrs. And usually then I'm not very productive at work. On the other hand, I work for a SOC, so how productive can I really be...
  3. My whole adult life I was a UK11 size. It used to irritate the crap out of wife if we went to Edgars to buy shoes. We would walk in and I would grab a size 11, pay and walk out. According to her that is not how "shopping" works... But these days, I must try it on. Nike UK11 is fine. Saucony UK11 used to be fine, but for the Freedoms I had to go for the UK12. New Balance for the Zante 1 UK11.5 was fine, but for the Zante 3 I must use the UK12. So no more Poobie Naidoo for me...
  4. About 5 years ago I was sick for a full 6 weeks. Coughing for 6 weeks was not fun... Went to the doctor - Anti-biotics cleared up the bacterial infection in my throat in about 3 days. So before you jump to copnclusions, go to your GP for a check-up. I picked up a cold at the beginning of last week. Started feeling better by Tuesday and started training again (after taking off 10days). Man, but your lungs take punishment with all the coughing. Went for a 12km run this morning and was torture. On the lungs and legs...
  5. If you can smell, that is..... I've been sick since Sunday. Nose blocked up properly. No running for me this week so far.
  6. I have 2 el'cheapo bags that I use: (1) An Adidas Terrex Speed 8L. I can just about fit a pair of jeans and a shirt in there. Comfortable but not enough space if you must stash your winter running gear in there as well... (2) A deuter speed lite 12L. I can pack my lunch in there as well. Have used it for up to 23km runs to work. Not the most comfortable, but gets the job done. Looking for new made-for-running pack as well. Something like the Camelbak Ultra 10 will do. Which was on special on onedayonly for R1700 about a week ago...... And this maybe http://www.trailshed.co.za/product/raidlight-ultra-vest-olmo-12l/
  7. Sjoe, but this thread is rather quiet these past few days. How is everyone's training coming along? My wife and I dit our first "weekend" running last week, doing the Wierie race. It is only 1km from home, so just a quick walk to the start with no cursing of other motorist involved. I ended up doing my fastest 10km in three years. My wife did a 2min PB... We also went for for a trail run last week Thursday at Wolwespruit, which I really enjoyed. Nice flowing singletrack with nothing overly technical. Once summer is in full swing I might start doing the Tuesday timetrails there.
  8. I'm still on my no-running-over-weekends streak (maybe). I took a tumble on my run on Thursday and injured my left hip and also scraped off a fair amount of skin on my left knee. Because of the hip pain I haven't been sleeping all too lekker the past two nights, so I'm not really up for a run at the moment.
  9. Ignore Lexx's advise and HTFU. I woke up this morning with a semi stuffed nose and right lower back pain. I already gave yesterday a skip, so I'm going to put this old body of mine through a slowish "test" run to see how it is holding up...
  10. It reminds me of our Wolkberg trail run 2 years ago. I was convinced by my wife it is moer cold outside and we must start with our thermals - it was only 0degrees. I ran the last 33km of day one with the thermals tied around my waist. So nowdays I'm very mindful of what to wear and where I'm goint to store it when I take it off. A windbreaker or light jacket is easy. But full thermals is another story - probably won't fit in my current 8L pack. I'm also very mindful of whom I take advise from.
  11. Exactly what I'm currently doing. About 30 to 35kms a week, with none of the runs more than 10km at the moment. I will step this up to about 40km beginning of August, mainly by increasing one of the runs to about 15km. All my short runs (~6km) I do at an increased tempo of about 20-30sec/km faster than my 10km average..
  12. I'm also keen to get back on my bike again, to commute to work. With the ever increasing fuel price it is a much better option. And with my knee giving me trouble again I can do with some low load-bearing exercise as an alternative.
  13. I see Nike and Adidas being discussed here, but how about the other brands? The reason why I ask is, I'm consedering the Saucony Freedom... What about the Saucony Kinvara? I use the Nike Terra Kiger for trail and it is a fantastic shoe, but the Terra Kiger seems like a completely different shoe compared the usual Nike shoes.
  14. In sympathy with you I've decided I won't do Comrades then either. But....... I'm turning 40 in a month's time. So I'm due for a midlife crisis.
  15. I also think to have a sinus drip 10days is out is not too bad - can be sorted out in less than a week. Much better than starting to get sick 2 days before the race.
  16. That is more or less my normal mileage for around this time of the year (at least for the last 5 odd years). I usually aim for two "major" events in the first 5 months of the year. This year it was OMTOM and Giant's Cup. Last year African X and OMTOM, ect. I will do another 1200-1300km the next 7 months, and the goal will be again one marathon + Tough One. I will be aiming to do my 9th Tough One this year and it is the one race I don't seem to grow tired of. Mainly because I've never had an off day, except for the first one.
  17. I've done a tad more than 1200km before Comrades...but luckily I'm not doing Comrades! Went for my first run yesterday after a 10day break after our trail run. The plan was to do an easy 8km, but cut it short at 6km. Goeie genade. I lost my lungs and legs near Lesotho. If I was to run Comrades I will probably not make the first 1/29th.
  18. Wise decision. My decision to try new shoes for this season/OMTOM was a distaster. I only started to feel comfortable with my new shoes 4 weeks after OMTOM....
  19. Good warm weather by the look of things...
  20. Eish... Sitting in the office this morning with post race blues after Giant's Cup Trail the past weekend. Absolutely stunning event in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa. The best part? Day 1 after 27km (with 7km to go; and with my legs in serious pain and cramping) and being offered an ice cold Striped Horse Pilsner. Best beer I had in a very long time. After that my legs felt great!
  21. We were members of Irene.... But no club runs. TTs actually very poorly supported. I'm considering hooking up with ACRW, which is closer to home for me (although I work right across the road from Irene!).
  22. Finding a proper running club around here is one of the very big frustration of living in Centurion. All the clubs around here are very much focused on races only. We have even on occasions driven all the way to RAC on Sunday mornings to join their club run (another disadvantage of Centurion is that it is relatively flat). I wish for a club that has club runs on Saturdays. But in the mean time it is just me and my wife...
  23. No runnning for me this weekend. Last run will be next week Tuesday. I'm tapering towards my race next week. Last big one for this season, before we start up again Spetember or there about. Our (me and the wife's) running is currently not going to badly. We are not pushing 32min 8km runs like some of the fast okes on this forum, but are running on average a good 15-20sec/km faster per kilometer than Feb/March wiith more or less the same volume. Our training was really nowhere beginning of the year, mainly due to injuries and a lack of energy. My back strain now also a thing of the past..
