  1. How far backward would you say the occasional cheat sets one back? Over the weekend I often end up having 2 or 3 castle lights and a slice or two of pizza for example. I get that its not the right move, but I won't beat myself up either as this is a lifestyle change, not a diet, occasionally I will have to eat higher carb foods (because I am at an event etc). Castle light seems to have between 5 - 8g carbs per 330ml? 3 pizzza slices around 100g... If the rest of the day is sharp , that's still under 150-200g which while not being a level ok for ketogenic diets, is still pretty low carb?
  2. A quick surf before the cycle in to work intensifies the training substanitally... I k.ked off in my cycle this morning
  3. I had a vitality review about 2 weeks after starting banting (November) and again yesterday. Cholesterol is up from 4.6 - 5.02 (just losing the points), blood pressure was about the same, waist 1cm smaller but weight registered at 103 kg, down from 109kg. I am organising blood tests at pathcare to check LDL vs HDL and I guess I will test regularly to check how the ratios behave. I must confess, I am not strict enough to stay in ketosis... but my general carb intake has definitely plummeted (2 weeks around Christmas was not good!) All in all, I am happy that I may finally break 100kg soon!
  4. As opposed to the standard GP who hasn't questioned a word on the nutrition blocks he learnt at varsity coming from the 50's? Impartial is a difficult thing to find. I think the guy just wants someone who is open to the idea of different diets
  5. I see that Dialdbikes has some dakine backpacks... sorry
  6. Backpacks helping to protect ones back... Evoc and Dakine have been mentioned. Are these available locally? If so where? Recommended models? I know this has been discussed a bit but I cant find the threads... Sharp
  7. Thank you for the info, the one I bought is the Crede's unscented virgin oil... good heads up though!
  8. Hope you not STILL buying those tubs of margarine... It looks great, any new connections for wholesale nut purchasing that doesn't break the Christmas no bonus
  9. I picked up a big tub of the unscented cocnut oil from a health shop at west coast village for R85... I didn't think that too expensive based on the prices of nuts etc.
  10. Thanks for the info. Going to get the tests done through Pathcare, gf sends off plenty bloodwork to them so is taking some bloods later this afternoon.
  11. I have been slowly getting through Peter Attia's Cholesterol Series. My biggest concern at this stage is getting an early LCHF baseline (I have missed the before testing period) to monitor my risks... I want to be absolutely sure that this isn't going to cause harm. It seems the consensus is to get actual LDL-C and LDL-P testing done in addition to the normal blood work tests. Anyone know where to go in CT and what to measure or look out for?
  12. I reckon we are already on the way... Don't ride in lycra, that's my motto... well that's always my motto anyway
  13. - Update - I need to get over that queasy feeling quickly... I just looked and its 16h00... I haven't even thought of the lunch tin, I am still full! High FIVE to proper fat intake!
  14. I received information from a colleague on a guy who brings in and distributes certified grade A2 karoo lamb. He has given me quite a bit on the origin of the lamb and delivers weekly to areas in Cape Town. The colleague reckons it was good meat. I have placed an order that I will receive on Thursday, I will comment again once I have tried the lamb. Here is his latest newsletter if you are interested.
  15. I also need to buy a scale and some ketostix maybe. We are entering our 4 week in LCHF and neither of us feel like we have lost weight or look much different. We have had to derail on two days due to company events when we couldn't get around beers and carbs but got straight back on the next days.
  16. I made it exactly the same as the book, with coconut cream, cocoa powder and some xylitol and stevia sweetener. It tastes pretty fantastic and I only felt a little nauseous on my cycle in to work. That said, we may be still feeling the side affects of switching from carbs to fat. NEither myself or my gf are feeling super amazing at the moment. I did find that Noakes recipe might eb enough for two shakes? I doubled up the recipe and is makes almost 1L of shake. I tried drinking iced lemon water to help ease the stomach and it seems to have worked, I am also feeling ridiculously full (on a side note) and the gf found it way more appetising than force feeding bacon and eggs so early in the morning (She isn't a morning eater).
  17. First morning with a fat shake. Would love to say I feel awesome but hells bells that's a lot of fat in one sitting. Tried the one in Noakes book based off htone's shake!
  18. We got onto vitality as of the 01 December 2013. We will make it onto bronze when we finish the rest of the online assessments. If we do the vitality check, fitness assessment and nutrition assessment to get as high as we can now, can we do it all again in January or is there a monthly limit that applies even across new calendar years?
  19. So I just hooked myself and my gf into vitality through a life policy covering the new house. Is it worthwhile to do all the assessments we can through (we have done the online ones) before the end of the year. I have logged all my riding with endomondo (3000km in commuting) which won't count it seems. I don't see us getting to gold before the end of the year?
  20. There was also no mention of the relationship between burning glycogen and burning fat (Aerobic/anaerobic exercise). In fact, I don't recall him mentioning glycogen at all come to think of it. But as you say, the aim was to get the message out and make it as easy as possible to understand. On the prevalence for increasing LDL levels, I recall Peter Attia doing an in depth post explaining that measuring the number and size of particles is much more important than the concentrations... and that LDL doesn't actually get measured (as Noakes mentioned)
  21. Thanks Dale, I ended up getting there way to early but the plus was I was the first guy to get my book signed and have a chat with Prof. What a cool guy! Hearing about the making of the book was great, so was hearing prof's specific stance on some of the LCHF "challenge" points. He put together a very good summary of the fat is not bad and heart disease arguments. The general level of discussion wasn't quite technical enough for me, but I do understand he was talking to the level of the general audience... What I did draw from it though, is a clear reason why it has been so easy for the food companies to draw the wool over peoples eyes. Noakes presented the absolutely outrageous concepts (when looking from a traditional standpoint, without all the reading we have all done), without the full technical explanations at times, and people just accepted everything as gospel. They didn't really know how it all worked but they accepted everything he said, without question... It was quite something to witness. Obviously, I agree with his standpoint because of the overwhelming amount of reading I have been doing, but it was still crazy to see the lay-person's (if I can call them that) response! Quite a lot of laughing from the audience on stuff that really wasn't funny, just facts... Anyway, that's just my thoughts, I found the talk very interesting and the book is really well put together to boot! Just made menu choices a lot easier! There seems to be a great section on breakfasts... which I find the most challenging meal without carbs.
  22. Had I seen you on any of these bikes I probably would have stopped and stared awkwardly... Nice bikes!
  23. Can anyone confirm the time for tonight's talk... I will definitely be there but can't get through to the SSI guys to confirm that its 18h00?
