  1. You joke, I know a guy who asked his wife to lube their bikes for their upcoming ride... She put lubricant on all the shiny bits, including the rotors. While they were out riding, said guy began cursing the LBS yet again because "they such a bunch of money thieving muppets... etc etc" until he realised what had happened. We chuckled for quite a while after that
  2. Wait until JB sees this thread... A lot of the hubbers I have taken advice from swear that the best grease is the cheapest grease you can find. It all works, I have found midas grease to be the cheapest...
  3. Are you guys successfully getting sweet helmets locally?? They make incredible kayaking helmets too!
  4. I cycle into work almost every day now... half of my route on the bike lane, the other half there isn't one. I am courteous as much as I possibly can be, doing what I can to make sure I am not obstructing anyone. I have been met with nothing but consideration from even exasperated motorists ( I accept a lot of the accidents out there happen to considerate cyclists like myself). I get irritated with cyclists that ride like idiots because their actions ultimately make the roads more dangerous for me, motorists start targeting cyclists, not john on the red bike! Many guys at work are super anti-cyclists on the roads, I listen to the stories and what they have to say... Half the time, they have a right to be frustrated by the cyclists... This is all derailling the fact that all these accidents/deaths of late are really tragic! Making my post seem irrelevant
  5. Stoked, actually on a list wooo hooo
  6. The new Giant Trance 29er 1 will come in at your budget. Very nice spec for the price and reviews seem very positive...
  7. Yep yep... this is going to kick ass!
  8. Any updates on the safety of using this area? I am in the process of moving to the West Coast and I am not hyper keen on going over koeberg fly over.
  9. I do exactly the same route 3 to four times a week... Let's Ride actually showed me the route. I had not had issues when looking behind me at the drivers and indicating I was going straight. I got a bit complacent the other day and assumed a taxi had seen me, he hadnt but only a close call, luckily no bruises. I reckon if one goes carefully its ok. There's an old skinny guy that rides this section everyday in overalls, he gets off his bikes and walks across the intersections??
  10. Thanks!
  11. No one got any ideas?
  12. Hey, Another colleague is also keen to try get from the city bowl to Pinelands. I know the Albert road upgrade is on the cards but does anyone know a safe route he could take? Thanks in advance
  13. I did the same and must say, it sometimes is a bit hit and miss, but on the whole I make awesome coffee and the setup was cheap as chips!
  14. That no matter how safe your route is... Lose focus for a second and be taken out! Got inches from a taxi taking me out going straight (on a bicycle lane!) when he wanted to take the left slip lane. Was pretty gratifying hitting his taxi and then riding up to his window when he was stuck in traffic and asking what does he think he was doing (politely of course )
  15. I chatted with Noel from Trail and Tar, he will brief the runners at the weekly wednesday runs about looking out for cyclists and in general being courteous to all...
  16. Thumbs up to an absolutely awesome experience! Finally got the oppertunity to do my first ride in Tokai yesterday... Know we rode fairy garden, boulders, snake eyes, Mamba? and then another one. It was sublime and I will definitely be keeping an eye out to help with the build days. Came off a plenty, but mostly because I was trying to avoid clutching them breaks and skidding all over the trails! Sore today but totally worth it!
  17. timefly, While the campground cycle lane is dodgey... I now cycle through the suburban roads avoiding the almost all major ones. My enjoyment factor has gone up tenfold!
  18. Anybody have any info on the best/safest route from Durbanville to Pinelands? A collegue wants to give it a go???
  19. Follow the train line from Plumstead (on the M5 side of the train tracks) Go under the bridge at Wetton Rd Get onto Gibson At t junction go left and get onto 2nd avenue (which by the way has awesome little pubs and food spots!) up second avenue, over landsdowne via a robot Carry on Livingstone and veer slightly left to get onto St Thomas. Over Keurboom to get into Keurboom park (which is cool) Then onto Tulley Allen Left into Sandown. Cross over onto dirt road parking on right hand side... follow it along through a narrow pedestrian gate, over the entrance to Bishops and onto the petrol station at Rondebosch common... Go on bike lane, tunnel under camp ground Rd and continue on the bike path eventually ending up way further down on Campground... Straight onto Klipfontein and get into the bike lane on Raapenberg and turn off forest drive and TADA PINELANDS! Nice thing is not too many stop starts and most roads on the route have traffic calming measures which makes owning the lane far easier!!!
  20. See... already a lesson in how to get along
  21. Trail and Tar have a weekly wednesday run set up that seems helluva well supported Jimmy, at least runners dont damage the lips of the DH trails like XC guys hehe
  22. I was one of the runners out in tokai yesterday TBH it is the second time I have joined in on trail and tars wednesdya trail run and there were .... loads of runners that joined in. I was very interested to see how this would pan out with mtbikers... In general I was impressed (I was with the slow group) the leader dude was very aware of cyclists making everyone scramble like dassies if bikes became visible. We didnt run up any single tracks really (no DH tracks for sure), we did do a few single track sections going in the right direction but definitely didnt hold up any cyclists. I will have a chat with the organisers and point them to the hub maybe to organise some sort of understanding between what they are doing and the bikers?? I am not familiar yet with tokai trails so hard to say whether or not we encroached on which trails... I agree that awareness needs to be created and runners, even on the jeep track, must learn to keep space available for cyclists bombing passed! They definitely have no idea with regards to how fast cyclists come at them though, like deer in headlights! Made my night hehe
  23. I reckon you are thinking this through correctly and don't beat yourself up about going through the process... As testosterone filled as we are, when something serious like this happens you it does take a while to build back up. I switched my commuter route yesterday from majority main roads to suburban, finalised the route this morning. 4 minutes longer to get into work but I ride about 500m with heavy traffic as opposed to almost 11-12km. I felt far safer and less stressed when I got this side. Maybe work out a route that doesnt make use of heavily trafficked rouds as a starter.
  24. Without all the "politics" between the two groups, there is a valid point that unless organisers do their bit to ensure that the event puts money aside to rehabilitate the area that the event will impact, the event should not go ahead... But ja, some dudes frowning at cyclists while driving diesel and oil leaking machines deep into the wilderness is also a joke
