  1. If the route is the same & and weather is kind of constant, most alphabet groups will ride similar racing times year after year. Look at the finish time of each group (say 1st 30%) and see what group aligns to your target finish time. Start in that group. Don't be the strongest in the group, then you will have 150 wheel suckers for the entire race. Not an exact science, but can make the race safer AND faster for you.
  2. To expand When I am fit I race Vets/Masters. These bunches normally rides in a proper, predictable manner - like the pros When I am unfit and race in the Alphabet soup groups, I choose the group when I can sit in the top 10-20 in the main bunch. So even if I am seeded in say B bunch, I will drop back to say D bunch. This has proven the safest option in a bunch that has way less skills and predictability.
  3. The slice of humble pie that I carry has 60g carbs....
  4. Ain't that the truth!!!!!
  5. This sounds too complex for my old school brain. And I don't race for podium (anymore) I take 1x banana/hr (25g carbs), + 700ml/hr of Hammer Perpetuem in my bottle (45 - 50g carbs). Total g carbs/hr = 70ish. For a MTB stage race I fill up on half coke/half water and eat what I can at the water table
  6. Do a few hard efforts 2 days before or even 1 day before race day. Will prevent you having "dead legs" when all hell breaks loose in the 1st 15min of the race. Some call it race activation...
  7. In my early race days I suffered from a poor night sleep (schoolboy racing). I've learnt that you need to have a good nights sleep 2 nights before. SO if race day is Sunday, FRIDAY night is super important.
  8. Rhineton works well. But suffering from allegies, I take it daily, No drowsiness during race day.
  9. Lekker post!!!! I kinda follow that rule - buy R18k HT - have spare money to spend on a Canon L lens.. buy one lens down... have spare money to spend on a drone...and so the cycle continues Same with cars - buy 2nd hand every 7-10 years, have cash for overseas travel and early retirement!!!
  10. I had the exact same Giant frame, perhaps a year or 2 younger. Last race was the Sani in 2019. 3x9 XTR. Loved flying past the okes with the RS-1 forks!!!! More expensive than my entire bike!!
  11. It's quite a lot of fun to rock up at the Berg & Bush with a 2017 Giant HT with a 2x11. I bought it 2nd hand after been on a 26er until '21 I think. R18k... There was only 4 of us on Hard Tails. Old, fat and unfit, but still rode in top 30% I think. But to add, there is a definite shift in bikes at these races. Few years back, most of the crowd had the latest and greatest. This year, many more older bikes.
  12. Hi rode Giro and interestingly also the Dauphine. 18th in both. Pidcock was 16th in Giro. Not too shabby... Also beating Bardet the retiree...
  13. The Go2Berg or CPT in Sept/Oct will be excellent prep if you are new to stage racing.
  14. Route details were just shared om WA and email... 1st stage profile just like last years Website says that info is pending... Anyone has the correct info?
  15. What a spectacular ride from Yates!!!! 1, 2, 3 and BAM!!!! What a spectacular gift from UAE & EF!!! One for the history books...
  16. Seems I need to go watch the DSTv 2hr highlights...
  17. JC, I think they thought it was low risk with Yates, not really showing any significant form for 19 days. Great spectacle!!!!!! Great from the bees playing a great hand of poker.... Great 18th pace for Louis - essentially, sitting at the back and just riding along.... (not trying to knock him)
  18. Hope to see some hubbers on the starting line and on the course I think we will be in our Spiderman shirts 😀
  19. Single wrap on the drops and double wrap on the top. Bottom wrap on the tops was what the Niner came out with. Thin and black... Best & cheapish top layer is the Giant brand. Lasts a lifetime and easy to wash.
  20. My 2c... As being stated HR is DNA dependant I've been using a HRM since '95 when I was 27, so I have plenty, plenty data I am 57 now.. Current RHR = 43-47bpm Max HR = 184bpm Avg HR for a hard race of about 2-3 hrs will be about 158-163bpm Avg HR for a training ride mixed Zone 2-3 = 147-154bpm
  21. Kim le Court had a cracker of a Ronde - 5th!!!
  22. I'll ignore that comment... My focus for Q1 is executing a pretty large and expensive project, with little time to chase people for my hobbies. Easybike committed to continue the conversation, which they didn't... Not wasting their time at all. I responded when prompted... BTW, the price was great, and I could not find gruppo anywhere else. I was hoping for a normal, easy transaction, so that I could focus on my work priorities...
  23. Good for you I was interested in a full groupset. I was promptly contacted via WA and they let me know it will take about 2 weeks to get some missing parts, when they will contact me again to conclude the sale. That was roughly 2 months ago... I took this as a test of customer service, and did not send them any reminders... Still not a word...
