My Niner is geared at 36x32. No way I will make the last part of the Pass after 140km (at heavy 40c tyres) in that gear.

Looks like the Cx bike is kitted with 27.5 MTB wheels and tyres. Certainly not 40c tyres in the picture. Good choice!!

Eish, the road through Benoni towards Baps is not in the greatest state, narrow, and very busy. The R23 back from the Serengeti side also BUSY! Not sure how this will play out?

Would love to hear that. I follow Dion Guy on Strava, and he averages about 1000km/month. I know he did a ton of 200km rides, but somehow I don't believe 1000km/month will win you a 2nd place in the Munga.
