  1. Haven't earphones been banned for races? I saw a chap wearing headphones in my starts chute - I made a note to stay far away from him
  2. Next time you're lying unconscious because you've had an accident at a race and no one knows who you are because you are not in the system, perhaps you'll be more forgiving of "anal roadies" and their rules?
  3. Wouldn't the fact that you work at very different cadences for road and MTB racing also perhaps account for this?
  4. I have a Thule rack that mounts to a towbar and it scratches my canopy. We used the rack on a friend's bakkie and it didn't because his towbar extends further outwards than mine. I am guessing they try to design products that fit as many sizes and models as possible, but there will always be exceptions.
  5. Which works better? Rollers or a trainer? I am guessing a you work on your balance more on rollers.
  6. Doesn't a race need to have at least 600 licenes or open riders before it can be used for seeding? The seeding system is a mess but at least there is seeding. You should try running and trail running - there is always a 90 year old morbidly obese walker who pushes to the front of the start, creating havoc for runners who actually have a shot at getting a good time.
  7. There is a new Tri Club in Randburg - Adrian - adrian at aquaathlete dot co dot za or Phillipe - triedgedynamics at yahoo dot com. Phil is a tri coach who runs clinics at the Brightwater Virgin Active. Benefits of being a member include discounts on certain brands and access to coaching.
  8. Nice bike. I have the 904 with the standard components and managed a full Iron Man. I keep wanting to "pimp my bike" and upgrade the wheels, seatpost etc. but found nothing to moan about with a stock-standard bike. If you plan to get clips and a forward-facing seat post for triathlons you should check how easily these components can be added. I found that my seatpost would slide with a shim. Enjoy the bike!
  9. Maybe we should all chip and have the road down to the water at Heie Safari paved. That way we could hold events there. Which part os the reserve does Race for Victory go through? Is it by the Protea Hotel side where you can hike/cycle from?
  10. I managed my first season on tri's and I'm a ginger - anyone can do it with a bit of training!
  11. Thanks - you folks have helped me narrow down what to look for in a used bike.
  12. Thanks. I have been looking at the classified section on the Hub and there are one or two bikes that have caught my eye.
  13. Need some advice from those in the know. I have decided that I need a TT bike (I probably don't, so perhaps "want" is a better word). I am in two minds about buying new and buying used. If I get a new bike I will obviously be guided through the process by the shop that will be getting my SARS refund, but am a little unsure of what to look for should I decided to buy something out the classified section. What size TT bike frame should I look at? Should I get the same size frame as my road bike? Is there some kind of depreciation scale for bicycles? A kind of a "book" or "market" value for used bikes or is this solely determined by the seller? Is it better to spend, for example, 15K on a used bike with better specs or the same cash on a new bike that has standard wheels, saddle post etc? Thoughts anyone?
  14. I did my first IM this year and began tri's last year an am also fairly new to the sport. With swimming, frequency of training is important as a novice as learning the correct technique takes time. Aim for more, even if shorter, swim sessions and split your run cycle up into one long, two tempo sessions per week for each discipline. I managed to swim four or five times a week, most of my sessions were 1km session during lunch with one longer/open water session where possible. It should be noted that my aim was to complete rather than compete.

    Wetsuits

Fluidlines are pretty awesome though they don't always have stock and with wetsuits you should try them on first. If you can get measured and find a suit on fluidlines you will save mega bucks.
  16. I rode with Vittoria's for a while and while the may puncture more easily than Conti's, I found that having foldable tyres made changing them a quick process. Conti's can be a bugger to change in a hurry!
  17. Well done and thank-you to all involved in getting this aired on Carte Blanche. A few folks have mentioned riding in large groups, which is all good and well for training rides, but what about those who commute to work? It's not always possible to find people who live in your suburb that work in close proximity to you and are able to ride at the exact same time as you.
  18. Is this not maybe for the Challenge Triathlon in November? That price is what they charge for Iron Man distance events. Unless R2.7K is for the whole series?

  20. Blue October - Hate me. Awesome track!
  21. I have a Hydrapack which keeps water cooler for longer than the Camelbak as it has thicker padding. There is less space for other goods though. If you only plan on carrying a few spare items, the Hydrapack is the way to go. For stage races where you may need to take extra spares along, you would be better off with a Camelbak. The valves on the Hydrapack are not quite as good as the Camelbak. They will need replacing after a while. The bladder on the Hydrapack can be turned inside out, allowing for easier cleaning and drying out.
  22. If you are listening to dozi/kurt/steve/jurie etc you have bigger problems than being hit by cars
  23. I am a bit behind when it comes to technology - can I use my walkman for the 94.7? I've made some killer mix tapes
