  2. Surprisingly enough the muscle bound dude in the Dischem shirt has been helpful about Dischem's ChooseSafe stuff. Cresta Dischem. Didn't know all the ingredients, but did know where to look. This was the dude in the Dischem shirt, not the MyBrandHere shirt, but he was muscle bound. At that point -- a few months ago -- no products had a ChooseSafe sticker yet. Note that even my GP has to look up stuff, but at least she knows that I want her to look it up. And yes, it's a pain. It's punishing the innocent.
  3. Yes, an example of the minefield: bitter orange orange aurantium citrus aurantium synephrine naranja agria zhi shi are all the same thing, and commonly listed for weight loss. Sounds innocent enough. It metabolises to octopamine, which is banned in competition by WADA[1]. Supplement companies view WADA as an obstacle. They want to sell "stuff". Either stuff that's part of a fad (eg. organic gluten-free water, or vitamins) or stuff that'll actually work. As soon as it actually works, WADA bans it. Therefore WADA is an obstacle. Processed food does the same. Google for alternative names for monosodium glutamate. [1] For octopamine there's a non-zero limit since it's also naturally found in food (and beer.)

    This is a long-standing problem. You can work it so you don't even need to collect. Just let me print a .pdf. I'll bet a sheet of good quality A4 paper is cheaper than the fuel spent. Can do the same for race numberplates.
  5. Is your goal to finish, or to race? You will be able to get a new Tiagra 9 speed 11 tooth cassette if you look around a bit. Prices vary wildly. Since most power meters involve a crank in some way, you can get a 53 at the same time.

  8. I agree that SA needs a clearer distinction on social vs. racing events and participants. In SA every ride has a timing chip and becomes a race. That line has been blurred by organizers who want 101 billion people at the 94.7 MTB challenge. Race: race for position, in your category (elite, vet, cat2, etc.) Rolling road closure. Marshals. Prize money. Also: rules and drug tests. If you want the marshals -- and the prize money -- you get the drug tests. Some events include social events (10km or so) without prize money. I don't expect those participants to go to their doctor and pharmacist to ask clarification on the WADA list. If you do the same distance and route on the same day as the elites, you get the same rules. And the drug tests. Now somewhere in-between there's a blur. That blur needs to become a proper line. And when you decide to move from social events to race numbers there needs to be clarification. It mustn't come as a surprise. There should be no "I didn't know." Perhaps the correct solution is education. When you obtain your CSA license, you get a pamphlet with a quick introduction. Something like: - sneezing -> allergy meds -> speak to pharmacist about WADA (with pictures) Don't bury it in tiny writing 175 pages deep in a rulebook. Or something like that on Supersport. Or your cycling club can tell you in the beginning of the year when you get your license.
  9. I've got a similar bell on my MTB. Salvaged from an old bike. Simple, easy, small, and works. It's setup close to the grips, so I can trigger it without moving my hands. It's extremely valuable on certain trails. I usually give kids and dogs lots of space and warning since they can walk into your line when you ring the bell. If you don't have a bell, a simple "hello" is better than a "move!" If we get upset with cars for buzzing, and want 1.5m, shouldn't we set the example with pedestrians?

  12. Doesn't sound like he's having trouble stopping the wheel from turning; sounds like he has trouble preventing lockup. Possibly fatter tires, run at lower pressure, will do much more than changing the braking technology.
  13. When stopping, pull the buff down. When speeding up (descending), pull the buff up. This is a first world problem... There's a market opportunity here: wire up the buff to shimano Di2, and get it to happen automatically.

  15. Read the TUE rules. Speak to your doctor when you get a prescription. TUE will not be automatically granted. If you are too sick to ride without the syrup, maybe you shouldn't ride.
  16. Italian races are regularly available on Gazetta dello Sport in Italian, straight from the source. Not always, though... Italian commentating is easy to understand. It works on volume, not vocabulary.

  18. If it's the outside of your feet I would look at shoe tightness -- middle and toe -- first. Inners are for the knees, and the ball and arch of your feet. Personally I prefer the Sidi inners: a flat, very thin piece of cardboard.
  19. The thread topic is about racing. If the intensity is low enough to cause a spike, attack! (agreed that ppl overfuel for a lot of training rides.)
  20. That's why Friel recommends putting a gun to your head, or letting a lion loose immediately after doing the normal max hr test. Then you get your real max. Further notes: Max HR running != Max HR cycling. Do it on a bicycle. Do the test fresh. Don't do it the same week as a hard training session.
  21. Stages do alu cranks only. Aren't the alu FSA the heavy FSAs?
  22. I've done a second lap 94.7 fixing random ppls punctures and pushing some up hills. It's a beer run at the back, not a race. And watch out: the backmarkers swerve and stop for no reason, and without warning.
  23. There is a big difference, but you have to weigh it up with your budget and how often you'll use the tri bike. Clip-ons will help: they offer more hand positions (nice for 180km ride), they can help you relax your arms after the swim (depending on setup), and when you use them they're more aero. If possible, drop your handlebars a bit when you put them on. This depends on how high the pads are stacked for the specific model of clip-ons you buy. What you'll miss: - changing gears if you're really racing. - you won't get the TT bike hip angle, which will affect your run. - if you move your saddle forward to compensate the hip angle, you'll mess with your bike handling (not a big issue, IMO, on the IMSA course.)
  24. This was my first MTB race last year, so it came as kinda a shock to the system Had my bike a week or so. It wasn't overly technical, but it wasn't no dirt-road ride neither. Having said that, I did take a dunk into the river off of a bridge last year It's a MTB race.
