  1. I hear you, Mamil. But we need the ‘protestors’ / marchers, as well as the ‘letter-writers’, as well as CONNECTED people; then these 3 ‘people-types’ can effect change… …and, he can never say he was unaware, so there is that, too; I live in (real) hope. I know a professional mural-artist, who does 5-story buildings in Cape Town, and would love to get her (Mernette Swartz / _blakz ) to do a commemorative mural of the deceased cyclist - for ALL to see, on one of the underpass-support pillars, that just might STING local government, daily, for a period… I will contribute R1k towards the commemorative mural. It would need to be done ‘Guerrilla’ style, I would guess. Banksy would be proud! No planning permission; f**k ‘em. If Alan W. / Alan McMahon read this, then good; he/they are competent leaders, but now its time for more action, I feel.
  2. Reply received (promptly) back from Cllr McMahon: Dear Christopher, Thanks for your note and yes I agree. A point to note, as that the squatters living there also impact the Woodstock residential community severely. There is so much crime and vandalism in other parts of Woodstock - so yes I do 'get it' both sides, from the Road users and then the community. We have met with SAPS, the Pedal Power folk, cyclists, and other spheres of Government where it was agreed that Woodstock SAPS would as far as possible police the Church Str offramp for a period early in morning and again in afternoon. That has help somewhat. This gentleman's fatal mugging took place further long, near as I can determine to the corner of DF Malan And FW De Klerk roads, near the hospital under the freeway - a stretch that hasn't seen any of these usual cyclist muggings like Church Street area. However, point taken about divide and conquer. Our main focus has been to put pressure on Transnet to evict these folk on their land!! They have only acted now, as they can't continue to develop their land, as it is now. During their work and surveys, they'll be requesting eviction for 424 inhabitants! That's an alarming high number! (See attached). None of our City eviction were close to that! Due to the high number of undocumented foreign nationals, they are asking to court to allow the joining DHS (home Affairs)- as a party, as there will need to be many deportations. This hearing scheduled on 6th Aug, hopefully they will also set a court date for main application. Kid thanks for your note to me. Ian Cllr. Ian McMahon Councillor: Ward 115 Office: 021 487 2025
  3. Email timIan McMahon, C.O.C.T. Subject; Recent cyclist death, Foreshore, Cape Town. Hello Ian I commute fairly regularly from Hout Bay to Paarden Eiland, and have done for a number of years, using the cycle lane that runs roughly along the N1, before cutting through Paarden Eiland, where my business is located. When the trouble/robberies on the Salt River/Woodstock portion started, largely as a result of homeless people living adjacent to the route, I ceased cycling that ‘portion’, and instead cut through the working harbour, since I have a valid permit, for business purposes. This option - cutting through the harbour - is not available to 99% of cyclists, and there is a LARGE cohort of cyclists living in the Western Suburbs (Table View, etc), that previously made REGULAR use of this brilliant path, but no longer. In the court of public opinion, cyclists have been MORE than patient in awaiting resolution, and yes, processes have to be followed. This gentleman’s death should serve as an urgent catalyst to give effect to - once and for all - URGENTLY clearing out the squatters, repairing the destroyed fencing, AND now looking at possible foot patrols in the area(s) on the Foreshore where opportunistic crime is occurring. As a side note; the following; when I cycle past Clifton in the dark, there are multiple (private?) security officers keeping an eye on walkers - an excellent initiative. In closing, Metro police are often, often ‘gathered’, in GROUPS, in cars, chatting away, in many areas that i cycle past. For years, I have thought of the need to ‘divide & rule’, by spreading their resources wider, and NOT concentrating in a few, convenient-to-them spots. Kind regards Christopher Grinton Hout Bay / Paarden Eiland
  4. Could i get the e-mail address(es) to ALSO pen a letter? I commute weekly to Paarden Eiland, and have something to add…. thanks, Chris
  5. ...after last Monday's WET/WET/WET commute - this one was DRY - AND beautiful - the Moon had set early, leaving inky/black sky, temps were good, and cars were few...! Always surprised at the the sheer NUMBER of MyCity buses between Hout Bay and Bakoven - counted 10 on that short stretch of road came past me, from front & rear combined! Great service! Took the Swing Bridge route through the Waterfront today - and came across a newish 'light sculpture' - very impressive changing its colours in the early morning darkness! Snapped a pic of bike at the Mocca/Zeitz/SILO hotel, whilst adjusting my rear light - nice old industrial steel on display - lekker! Finally, the golden glow seen over the Durbanville Hills is indeed getting earlier - Summer IS s-l-o-w-l-y on its way!
  6. …and on Friday past, the 2023 Giant Revolt Alu with Carbon fork went on special for R25,995 Nationally (i think), i have one, 2x , and for relatively-little money, is quite a lot of gravel bike, at the affordable-end of the spectrum. Chris
  7. …’distressing grief’, and ‘utter desperation’, should not go hand-in-hand with selling a much-loved bike; I am with Bro Derek on this one, seemingly too much drama… Low-ballers are likely a pain in the ass; no more, no less. An inconvenient pest, they are, but thats about it. Drink some starch, and move forward. Appreciated you writing a reasoned-response to him, none-the-less!
  8. …agree with getting a LBS to assist, since they have the boxes to hand, and are practiced at packing bikes into (and OUT of!) boxes… I-F you do it yourself, can highly recommend putting plastic drop-out spacers (kind of plastic axles…) where you removed the wheels from - protects frame integrity, in the unlikely event of something heavy being placed atop esp. a road bike frame, etc….
  9. Imhave 2 mounts, but using each on 2 bikes, otherwise could try and help you… Olympic Cycles were always a mmajor-ish distributor, maybe tyr them first…? then, you could drop an email to China, asking for SA Importers contact details, not to buy direct, but to ask who may have… I feel Olympic, may help you. Cheers Chris (Ravemen 1200)

Just CHECKING you do USE the tongue loop (also called the Keeper loop)?
  11. Mark-up; yes, and…no! You do not mention how MUCH discount you received, to get the bike ‘down’ to R22.5k, maybe it was R35k, then that would put a bit more perspective, and bring it a fair bit closer to the ‘SA’ price? possibly. Not arguing about mark-ups, which DO seem high in Sunny SA, but we ARE the back end of the world, probably low sales VOLUMES, and, and, and. But i D-O agree with your sentiments! Cheers Chris
  12. Commute HB - Paarden Eiland, otherwise known as feeling Pap, a coffee stop, a determined tree root, and a rainbow! I then stopped for the 1st time in a LONG time for a coffee 'en-route', - as I was feeling a bit pap - and found a MAGICAL little coffee stop/bar (!), in the Waterfront. Whist drinking said coffee, I noticed ALL the Ficus trees on the kerb - their root systems were 'spilling out' of the bricked surrounds, and THEN noticed, many FEET away, the root system finding its way out of the kerb! Well, I thought I better toughen the f@ck up like said root system, and try hammer the rest of the way! This rainbow greeted me in Paarden Eiland! Chris
  13. I am ‘out’ of the regular ‘spread’ of cyclists, but JUST to give you an idea of what is possible; my kit e-Bike - recently stolen - was 20+ years old; my 29”er is a 2014 model - yup, 11-odd years old, my Eroica bike is 1982/1983, so around 42 years old, and my B-U-D-G-E-T Gravel bike is a 2023 model, bought new in 2025 for silly (low) money… I LOVE it. Just R25k, all in! ZERO bragging about being a tight-ass, just i do not drink the ‘Koolaid’, and ‘last years hot thing’ is M-O-R-E than sufficient, for MANY of us… Not really getting why people sell 1 (or2…) year old bikes, to get the next big thing…? Ride-what-you-got, unless you MUST change… Chris
  14. Late Friday afternoon: clean washing trip to Noordhoek, and then return with the next load… Amazing late-afternoon light; setting sun, under heavy cloud, making the green colours ‘pop’. Fun pics of me trying to photograph my shadow against the walls of Chappies. Cold. Colder than i expected. Lots of cars watching the ‘novelty’ of the setting Sun, given its absence in recent days! Chris
  15. eRotica? I think you meant eroIca? Just as much fun, but with clothes on… Yes, bent over, yes, a hard ride, and yes, taking PUNishment, but Eroica, and not EroTICA! 😂
  16. Mudguard fitted (and rear seat-post rack functions are a REAR mudguard-ish) - let wet commutes commence! (backstory - popped in at NILS/Woodstock Cycles - I wanted VINTAGE Alu ribbed 😇shorty racing bike mudguards, like I had in the 70's; he did not have a-n-d the radius would be for say up to 25mm tyres, and I am running 38mm, before moving to 45mm... The skinflint/saver in me spied SHINY shorty guards, at R80 each - my kind of pricing a-n-d helping him reduce stock, maybe 😁. Found the carbon fork on the GOANT Revolt has a M5 bolt hole UNDERNEATH the fork crown, so I drilled out the rivets holding the central brake-bolt mounting tab on the shiny guad, removing the hanger, and then mounted it - using 'crush' washers, the mudguard. It IS short, will see how much spray it keeps off, and revert back. Since I have 2 aluminium water bottles for this bike, I am trying to make it 'my own', rather than just boring plastic! (please be gentle on me...!) Chris
  17. Moderator; maybe split-off ‘Nils’ topic into separate topic to avoid derailment of CT Safety. I mentioned Safety AND Nils/Woodstock Cycles in the same post, and topic has gone off-topic! Tx, Chris
  18. can confirm Woodstock Cycle Works STILL in same location, and yes, moving to OBS in next month or two... Chris
  19. was unaware - tx for the heads-up - will double-check now...!
  20. Yes, will take a look OUTBOUND from Paarden Eiland this evening, and during the day, if i get a gap. I need to pop in and see Nils later this morning, will take a look then, too…👍
  21. HB - Waterfront commute, the time for mudguards has arrived! No actual rain on way in, save for a drop or two, but lots of standing water, so am going no need mudguards - will get to that this week... the Bascule bridge was just going up as I arrived, so a happy 10 minutes spent watching the Waterfront come alive. Was interesting to see NESTING PIGEONS go from nesting/roosting flat to 90-degrees vertical, and back to flat, as the bridge raised/dropped. Very adaptive creatures! ...1st charter was leaving the moorings at 06.45, to collect his breakfast-cruise customers! Chris
  22. Another commute HB - Paarden Eiland; cold, but dry, could HEAR the water coming down the mountain(s) (between HB and Bakoven, mainly) more than actually SEE it; beautiful pre-sunrise (dawn's early light, and all that...!). Definitely the best way to start the day! Chris
  23. RobynE gave you some great advice - as did others - just be aware you do not need double-butted spokes; straight gauge spokes are stronger, in theory, just not as compliant. But a high(er) spoke count wheel would serve you well (24, 28, 32 & 36 are spoke counts, with 36 being the heaviest count…). 32 may well be sufficient. Resist the urge to convert a well-functioning 2x driveline to the ‘must have’ 1x driveline; 2x will often give you more gear choices, smaller increments between gear ratios, and save you money by NOT swapping it out. Front derailleurs have been around 100 years - they mostly work just fine!
  24. I feel i am with Buff on this one; for as long as i remember, people have ridden/run/walked for (real) charity, raising GOOD funds, for GOOD causes…. All that may have changed - possibly - are that some multi-stage events have become SO expensive that there are few(er) individuals that can afford to partake, and thus the charity option, where some funds go to charity, some funds go to entry fees… But, globally, many millions of people still raise much-needed funds for charities, whilst giving EXPOSURE to that charity by competing in a well-publicized sporting event… Let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater; a FEW individuals may ‘chug’, as you say; the vast majority that ‘use’ charity-raising do it for honest/solid reasons. (the CTCT often has in excess of 300 individuals raising for this or that charity, most-all I would guess are ‘real’). nice debate! Chris
