  1. doesn't look like it'll be picked up on radar - odd design requirement
  2. standard 3in1 from the hardware store - mostly because the bottle comes with a long nozzle so it's easy to apply to hard-to-reach places. more importantly don't use too much (excess oil just collects dirt and slides it into the moving parts causing them to wear quicker): one drop into the bearing of each pulley (rd) and on each of the pivot points (fd and rd) is enough.

    TDW cancelled

so no compulsory portage section then? bummer
  5. Chain As you go to more sprockets on the cassette, you need a narrower chain. However, using a chain one size narrower than standard rarely presents any problem. Thus, you can use a "9-speed" chain with a 7-speed or 8-speed system, or a "10-speed" chain with a 9-speed system. This is not the ideal approach -- shifting may not be quite as smooth -- but it's workable. Narrow chains bring other problems, though. They are usually more expensive and -- with 10 or more speeds -- don't last as long -- even when used in the intended system. from: http://sheldonbrown.com/speeds.html
  6. Ok, last event is this Sunday - Hill Climb TT up Red Hill - this will be pretty much the same route as the hill climb event planned for the Spring League in October. We'll be starting at 8am opposite the Simonstown train station (Main Rd), riding on the flat for the first few hundred metres and then turn up Red Hill to the finish just before the view point (note: finish is not the actual top of the climb near Just Nuisance's grave - this is for rider safety - i.e. so that no one is turning around in the road on a blind rise). The route is about 4.2 km in total - not sure of the total elevation, but must be somewhere near 200m. Club100 members are to be in club kit. Visitors are welcome and will just need to pay the R50 "day membership". As per the other events, there'll be some great prizes up for grabs (gift vouchers, sunglasses, etc. from our various sponsors). See you all there, cheers.
  7. no, the 73kg guy should let the 87kg guy win every once in a while, you know, good sportsmanship and all that. next question?
  8. bummer, my wife hates your cycling too. in all seriousness, the only way i get my training time in is to commute to work (one hour each way) during the week. then i do a long ride once on the weekend.
  9. um, you'll probably need a mtb to run that...
  10. yeah, the maxi's are good or kendas or serfas. my trick is to use tyre liners which, in my experience, seems to make them last a bit longer.
  11. came off in feb (oilslick on a bend) and got pretty badly scraped up on my left arm and fingers. at the finish the first aiders did the following: 1 - cleaned and irrigated like crazy with saline to get all the dirt out. 2 - applied some orange red stuff from a tube - my best guess is it was betadine. 3 - added a couple of patch-type bandages (not sticky or anything) with extra betadine applied and wrapped the whole thing in gauze (taped). for the next 72 hours i removed the bandages, cleaned everything out with water and soap (stings like crap, just deal), reapplied betadine and wrapped in new bandages and gauze pretty much every 12 hours (i.e. every morning after showering and every evening before bed). after 72 hours i left it open so it could dry out (edit: I know what everyone's saying here, but i found keeping it wet from this point on meant that scar tissue was starting to "grow" onto the bandages and each time i removed them to clean the wound, they would rip off and prevent healing, so i left them off to see if i would get better results this way - it worked in my case, may not in yours). because the wounds were clean the scar tissue had a good clean base to build on and once dry could heal quickly. 7 days later the scabs starting falling off. anyway, i lost a lot of skin and that seemed to work for me - no scars whatsoever.

i think the last sprocket threads onto the freewheel hub. you'll need the correct tool (chain whip should do it) and a pair of strong arms. JB had a thread on this at one stage.

  15. http://www.cwcycles....ang-cage-xbc-05 they don't appear to have red though
  16. only ones i can think of include some sort of climbing: 1) camps bay to top of llandudno - we used this route for the Club100 winter TT series last sunday - starts out flat and then rises evenly to the top of the climb, it's not quite 10km - approx. 8.5km or so. or 2) simons town up to top of smits - don't know the precise distance here, but there are no stop streets/traffic lights. or 3) scarborough to top of smits (includes the false flat up to the entrance to the nature reserve - in summer you'll be heading straight into the teeth of the south easter) - again, not sure of distance, but must be near 10km.
  17. If the weather on the day is likely to adversely affect rider safety, then the event will simply be cancelled, not postponed. If anyone is unsure whether an event is on or not, you may call the Club100 secretary on the morning, his details should be on the website www.club100ct.co.za.
  18. Yep, weather was perfect, we had two sub 10 min times - winning time was 9m40s and myself at 9m56s.
  19. that's what I heard from someone close to the organisers - early days, but here's hoping.
  20. andy, we'll give you a head start. just about everyone will be on std road bikes - it's meant to be a "not-to-serious" series anyway just to get the legs turning over before spring.
  21. don't you hold the record for this route? what time should we be aiming for?
  22. great stuff gerald, thanks for all the hard work!
  23. with you there, the most exciting stage was the time trial...
