  1. For your information, I lived and worked in the USA for the last 14 years, which one would assume I was earning US dollars, and not ZAR. And furthermore, you can do a whole lot more with $90 (which is expensive) than what you can do with ZAR630 (assuming an exchange rate of ZAR7/$1). So please feel free to tell me how $90 is not expensive in your worldly opinion...
  2. Okay, I give up! You guys win, it's daylight robbery... If it's too much for your pocket, then just don't do it!
  3. Don't go to the States then to do a race, cause you're generally looking at $70 for sprint, $90 for olympic, and then your higher profile races like the Chicago Triathlon, is $160. And people don't complain about paying that, there's usually a waiting list for people who couldn't enter in time before the race filled up.
  4. Usually triathlons entail a lot of support, i.e. lifegaurds, medical facilities, road closures, marshalls, water stations, etc. And as where it may take you 2hours, there are people that take up to 4 hours if not longer to complete the event. And it's probably very true that it's so expensive because of the "M-dot" logo, but if they're sponsors or are overseeing the event, then they usually have slightly stricter safety guidelines than your local tri's, hence the higher price tag. And unfortunately the nature of triathlons, is that it's an expensive sport... Just my 2c...
  5. Sweet, Chicago made the list!!! Now when I go back to visit and I get any other wave than a 5-fingered one, I'll pull up this article to make the offender see the error of his/her ways!!!
  6. I got dibs on swimming then!
  7. We should make a Hub team! I've given up on training for it this year...
  8. Everytime I've flown through OR Tambo I've had something taken from me - flying internationally I'm not allowed to shrink wrap or lock my suitcases. They even went so far as to take things out of boxes and leave the empty boxes in my luggage. Now even if it costs a couple extra dollars I fly directly to Cape Town!
  9. Thanks helloise and Jaco-fiets, I may have to make this my first official MTB race ever...
  10. How technical/complicated/difficult is the 35km?
  11. Is there an option of I'd like to vote but can't?
  12. That's probably why it's being held at Warmbaths... I wonder what the course would be like? Would definitely like to try it out cause I haven't had any official races since August last year!
  13. Where did you see the entry fee? Maybe I'm just not looking at the right place...
  14. Isn't August a little early in Durban?
  15. That must've been what the road block was for at about 6pm yesterday. Didn't see anything by the time I made it through though.
  16. Wowzer, looks like a crazy race! Do you think the race will have a lot of interest? Just wondering cause I keep screwing up my knee for running and wouldn't know for certain if I could be dumb/crazy enough to enter it until I can start racking up the running miles. And definitely wouldn't want to pay that amount o entry fee for an aquabike event...
  17. I just wanna know... What happened to the dog?
  18. AB: I'm back in freezing Chicago again, but will be moving to Sunny SA in a week. I actually got a pretty good job offer there and I figured I'd see what living in SA is like nowadays!
  19. Looking for group rides or people from the Melkbosstrand area (road bikes)? Thanks!
  20. Thanks! Wasn't sure if it was standard across the board. Someone else has been taking care of things in SA for me until I get back there, and figured if I needed to "produce" something I could get it here before I go back.
  21. I have a slight dilemma, and was wondering if anyone had a way around it... I brought my bike in to South Africa whilst on vacation (t)here in a bike case. And it was not officially imported and the insurance company is looking for import papers before it insures the bike. Any suggestions on what to do?
  22. Does anyone know of civil engineering companies looking for a civil engineer, 6 years experience in infrastructure and transportation projects? I'm looking to move back to South Africa, and since I'm here now for a few weeks, figured it would be a good time to try to get interviews. Thanks! Edit: Preferably in the Western Cape area, but other areas are okay too.
  23. How technical is the bike course? Thinking of doing the sprint distance, maybe... But my mtbing skills leave much to be desired!
  24. Try Cape Town Cycle Hire, I used them last year. www.capetowncyclehire.co.za
  25. It's just funny because it's been brought up before and then the discussion of technique starts, and I never knew that shaving was so complicated!
