  1. haters gonna hate
  2. le upgrade has arrived
  3. hahaha that bit up there is actually pretty cool , but then you need to go ALL the way up - to the back fence. Some nice bits of trail up there, not very long compared to the climb to get there though...
  4. after the camel humps, left straight away? yeah, I love it too. super gnarly, but not everyone's cup of tea I guess...
  5. ok so I am at least making some sense. phew. I wonder if tygerberg mtb would be open to putting on an event of sorts? maybe even a super D sort of route - start way on the other end, beyond the sub station (plenty jeep track for shuttling) and then throw in the climb from the sub station back to the beacon for good measure, then from the beacon down to the end. could be a blast and a half...
  6. Actually, I have to agree with a previous poster that this thread is really a bad idea. There is a specific sign up at the beacon that requests that you take it easy and not "race downhill" - due to the fact that Majik is shared with dog walkers, trail runners, teenagers that want to smoke and smooch, etc. While I am definitely up for the challenge, we need to be sensitive to how we handle this - mountain biking in majik is constantly in jeoprady - the non cyclists are always looking for reasons to shut it down. Perhaps having a big thread about how fast we can get down the hill is not the wisest thing. If you're going to discreetly race down the hill when no-one's around (and share times with your buddies over that post-ride beer) that's one thing - but if we're going to publicly make a point of turning it into a challenge - and pitch up for a mass downhill "race" - I think we're asking for trouble. Originally my comment about the 7 minutes was in response to Cap saying he wanted to take the Intense there, and me mentioning that I had once timed myself, and it took me about 7 minutes from beacon to road. Pushing your own limits is a part of mountain biking - no-one can expect you to go slow - only to be cautious and be aware that around every turn there could be someone on a leisurely walk (come to think of it, I need to strap a cowbell to my bars). Sorry if I sound like a bit of a wet blanket. I know the guys at Tygerberg MTB go to a lot of effort to both maintain the trails and fight for the rights to use them. As much as I love this idea, I can't help but think we're making their lives difficult. Hope I'm making some sort of sense - if not FLAME AWAY. Perhaps the trick is to approach Tygerberg MTB to organise some sort of formal event?
  7. there seems to be lots of confusion as to the "official" route. I'll make a plan to go ride it sometime this week with sports-tracker running, and i'll either take pics at each intersection or borrow someone's helmet cam
  8. seems like you've shortened it considerably? we did it all the way to the parking lot this weekend - which I reckon is doable in sub 7. also, after the 2 compressions - do you mean IMMEDIATELY left after the compressions, or a few metres more down the singletrack and then left? Capricorn video'd the route we did this weekend...
  9. A specialized / monster rider to giant? Fairclough, Brosnan or Hill?
  10. some knee / shin combos for sale on buycycle: http://www.buycycle.co.za/buygear/clearance-specials-en/sixsixone-knee-shin-guards-4x4-large-sixsixone.html http://www.buycycle.co.za/buygear/clearance-specials-en/troy-lee-design-knee-and-shin-guard-troy-lee-design.html
  11. Hmm, I like the hwip, dunno why edit: pity they're SPDs - I'd like a pair like this that's fully flat
  12. I have the DVD
  13. that's also a good point.
  14. not that i'm unhappy with my Blue Beast in ANY way, just sayin'
  15. Imagine I took my Meta and rebuilt it onto a Reign frameset (or a Santa Cruz butcher for that matter ): - X7 drivetrain and shifters, Stylo cranks modded to 2 ring with bash - Juicy 7 brakes - Alex Rim supra BH's with DT Swiss spokes, Giant 15mm through-axle hub - Fizik Saddle, Boobars, Giant stem - Rock Shox Sektor Coil 110-150mm Not the best parts spec under the sun but you'd end up with a pretty freaking solid bike!
  16. Ghostface, I think the way to get the Reign more recognised is to get them out onto the trails so that people can see what they are capable off. If you insist on giving me a Reign, free of charge of course, I suppose I could thrash it out on the trails and help do some marketing. It's the least I can do. Shall I PM you my delivery address?
  17. bloody fantastic I'm with Cap on the frameset thing - on my Meta 5.5 I have a host of parts from my old bike, from new, etc to build the sort of ride I want. Come upgrade time the idea of getting a Reign frameset (for example) with shock (as most framesets are sold) is massively appealing, as I can take everything I've collected across to the new frameset and build the sort of bike I want, for a good price.
  18. For sure. I was just guesstimating the price, based on the US / Rand difference on the Trance Advanced SL according to the RRP on the US and SA sites...
  19. Geco Cycles Cycle Lab (I think) Chris Willemse Cycles (I think)
  20. Good on you James, thanks for the response If I was still in the market the Reign would get serious consideration but alas I have just spent all my budget on my current whip so the next one's a few years away still I rode the Reign X1 (the navy blue one) last year at a ride before you buy and fell in love. There's one standing at my LBS, but alas, a little out of my budget! I think something that would go a long way to growing the AM market would be more AM / Enduro / Super D style events. The Enduro / Super D circuit is blowing up in the states, and that sort of race format would be great here - especially since we have great trails for that sort of thing!
  21. The Freeriders have changed again - new colours, some with a stitched sole and some without. Would be interesting to see what compounds are now being used...
  22. The Bike Shed also stocks 5.10 and just got new Impact Low stock I currently use a pair of Vans Rowleys and they're doing pretty well with DMR V12 pedals. The Vans waffle sole is a winner. When they're dead, I'll go for 5.10s. Probably a pair of blue spitfires, or purple freeriders
  23. dude, you're killing me Let's hope I've already bought my trail / AM rig though
  24. The Reign 1: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/reign.1/9035/48904/ And Reign 0: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/reign.0/9035/48903/ The better specced, more expensive big brothers.
  25. Take a look at the Reign 2: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/reign.2/9035/48905/ Looking at the average ratio of US RRP to SA RRP according to Giant's site, that would retail for about 17k here. Looking at the parts spec (which is neither here nor there), that should be a good seller (plus there's 2, more expensive, options - I just picked the cheapest). Yet I doubt we'll see it here. Such a pity - with Giant's Maestro suspension and the Reign's legacy I am sure there would be many people in line to buy one. Is the mid-travel / AM / trail market in our country really that poor? Does no-one buy a 150mm travel bike? Why are Giant not bringing these bikes in? Keen to hear other hubbers' thoughts on this...
