  2. I don't need to, their prices are so damn good. And I earn smart shopper points. Come onnnnnn TNT. Not the old "do you ask for discount at the supermarket" argument. Let me spin it around - do you NOT ask for discount at your LBS? If so, I applaud you, you're either a better man than me or you're loaded. If the latter, can we be friends? My birthday is a couple of months off...
  3. No... ...I shop at Pick n Pay
  4. The attitude is what got to me, hence:
  5. To respond to all of your comments: 1. yes my story was long winded. I needed to blow off a lot of steam. Ask me for discount and perhaps I'll cut 5% of my words 2. no, I won't "name and shame". Not unless I've sent management of said shop an email first 3. yes, I left it to the last minute, hence my desperation. Had a very busy time at work and ideally should have done this all last week. That's how it goes sometimes. 4. I was never asked how I was going to pay. Could have paid cash if credit was an issue.
  6. I know asking for discount is a contentious issue. I know bike shops need to feed their families too. I know that some people believe that discount is earned with years of loyalty to one shop. I know others believe a discount is a right. All I know is this - I will ask for discount, especially when I'm buying a R600 tyre and am paying you for fitment as well. And if you don't give me discount, that's fine too - at least I asked. BUT please treat me with courtesy. The exact response I received this morning was "discount!?" from one sales person, who then turned to the next sales person who looked like he was about to burst out laughing. He then proceeded to tell me how awesome the tyre was. They never said "no" outright, they just treated me with such contempt for daring to pose the question that their answer was clear. Appropriate responses to a customer asking for discount: "But of course!" "Let's see if we can work something out..." "I'll chat to the manager and see if it's possible" "Sorry, can't give you discount on this item, but we'll fit it for free!" Or simply: "Sorry, we can't give you discount on this item" But please, don't treat me like an A-hole for asking for a simple discount. If they weren't the only people near me with that tyre, and I wasn't so desperate for it, I would have walked away. I'm notoriously impatient
  7. nope, I'm doing the Fair Cape Point Break instead. 30km XC ride. Hence the urgency to get rid of that monster attached to my front rim
  8. Trying to avoid another heavy tyre. Selling my 2 used High Rollers though for R300 if you want mr mayhem
  9. I went from Tektro's to Avid's (Juicy 5s, so not even Elixirs) and the different in lever design was chalk and cheese
  10. Currently running Maxxis High Roller 2.5 UST front and Kenda Nevegal 2.35 UST rear (tubeless setup) on a Commencal Meta 5.5 for trail / all mountain riding. Thinking of changing the front as the High Roller is lank heavy and a little overkill. Can't find what I want right now (another UST Nevegal or an Excavator) so thinking of the 2.4 Conti Mtn. King "Protection" version. It's expensive, but seems crazy light. Worth the money in your opinion?
  11. "open" the lever like you would with a quick release fold the lever over "backwards" into the slot in the "cup" it sits in unscrew until totally unscrewed pull out like so: hope you managed to get it done before your ride PS that's for the newer maxle system. not sure how the pike works.
  12. By the sound of things, neither could he
  13. that backflip is nuts, almost as nuts is the camera angle looking at his back wheel - that's not a jump, that's flight!
  14. yeah you've run out of steerer, so your stem's going to have to stay where it is. seems you already have a riser bar - try get a stem with a more extreme angle, or a bar with even more rise. how low is it when you're on the bike?
  15. so do I, now that I've ridden it
  16. progress! today I finally hit an obstacle at Majik Forest that I've been checking out for a long time, but never had the courage to hit! Those that know the spot will realise the photo doesn't do justice to how scary these rocks are from the top for a noob like me I also broke my personal best beacon-to-parking time, from 7 minutes to 6:43. Feeling confident now! Have yet to take my new bike to Contermanskloof though so that's next on the agenda!
  17. if there isn't any more steerer to move the stem up - then look at getting a stem with more of an angle, and / or a set of handlebars with more of a rise. Post a pic or two of the current setup
  18. www.sports-tracker.com on my Nokia 5800
  19. 6:43 I know the screencap says 6:45, but when I took my phone out my pocket at the bin it said 6:43 and the motion of taking it out the pocket un-paused it (autopause was on) and it counted for 2 seconds before I could hit stop. It's the truth, I swear
  20. This is the tyre in question: http://www.specialized-sa.co.za/detailequipment.php?equip=514&cat=172
  21. Hey hubbers Wanted to get your opinion. On my Commencal Meta 5.5 I'm currently running a Maxxis High Roller 2.5 front with Kenda Nevegal 2.35 rear, on Alex SupraBH freeride rims (tubeless, both UST versions of the tyres). Riding style is trail / AM type stuff with the occasional XC race (fun ride). I'm loving the grip of the high roller but find it too heavy, and wanted to get another 2.35 Nevegal for the front, but can't find stock anywhere (and the supplier doesn't know when stock is coming) I was in Revolution Cycles the other day, and they suggested I chuck the Nevegal I have on the front and put a Spez Purgatory 2.2 on the back (apparently the Spez tyres run pretty wide). What's your thoughts on that combo? Anything else I should consider?
  22. by the way, with the new shock in the BB is now roughly 1.8cm higher (rough measurements) and it's o so plushy
  23. like horse urine?
  24. tell me more?
  25. to be honest it doesn't really sound like much of an urban assault - lots of jeep track with some stairs at the end?
