My monstercross journey begins...

The touring/ gravel grind/ monstercross genre has been going for ages in the states and Europe. See this thread going since '06 (one of many). http://forums.mtbr.com/29er-bikes/i-beg-you-more-monstercross-355649.html The geometries are a little different to pure CX bikes - less aggressive and leaning more towards comfort and all day riding. More purpose built frames coming with rack mounts etc. More on the gravel grind/ touring side is the Spez AWOL which is one of the newest models available. Not a Spez fan, but this is a pretty cool.

Hakkalugi- as in, well, you can pronounce it More CX than monstercross. Very cool bike.

Yes you can - you can get a 'sprung' tensioner. This way the although the chain needs to be long enough to accommodate the frames most 'suspended' point it will still be tensioned across the travel range. Not sure how well they work though. I'd run a front chain guide too if it was my setup - just to try and counter any chain whip/ bounce on the trails. I good ratio to start with is 2:1. 32:16 on a 26". If you haven't SSed before maybe start with 32:18.
