  1. doing the epic this year for the first time and i must agree that all the hours in the saddle really gets to your bum. For me anything under 5 hours, my bum is fine. go over the 5 hour mark you do get sore and tired and some chafing, no matter which saddle you use and how used you are to it. mine is 2 years old and i still suffer at 6 to 8 hours in it. So use chamois creme. lots of it. also dont change anything in your diet (in race and before and after). so if you use gels, keep on using them and so on. make sure your shoes are worn in and fits well and you have walked a couple of uphills in them. we are starting to taper from this week for the last 3 weeks to make sure we do not start overtrained or fatigued. other than that make sure your bike is in tip top condition at the start.
  2. Agree. I weigh 81kg's and also use 2bar in front and 2.2 bar at the back. works in all conditions. I suppose 1.8 and 2 bar could work for someone as light as 72kg's
  3. someone is selling a very good set of mavic 819 ust rims with dt swiss hubs right here on the hub cant go wrong with that. https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=44907
  4. thanks bigben
  5. will shimano xt external bearings work as a replacement for shimano 105 external bearings ? are the shaft diameters of the 105 crank and the xt crank the same ?
  6. anyone have the kcnc quickrelease skewers on their mtb's ? any hassles or failures of these skewers ?
  7. Ok so far it is RK = 0, RR = 1.
  8. Fandacious, is it not true that when you crash in a ppa race, you can actually claim from the ppa as they take out insurance especially for this. One insurance company informed me that is why they dont cover in race accidents as the race organisers normally have insurance to cover the accidents and one should claim from them. maybe it is worth investigating ?
  9. does anyone have any input about the race kings protection vs race king ust ? whats the difference between the two ? (except for the obvious weight diff) Are the sidewalls of the protection version strong enough for our south african rocks and thorns ?
  10. Price aside, which is the better UST tire when comparing puncture resistance , rolling resistance and tread longevity ? anyone ride both of them and give an honest opinion ?
  11. they (almost) never puncture or cut. the rubber is thick and gooey and even large impediments like thick nails or large pieces of wood which normally kills other ust tyres, seem to close to a small hole, which the stans/joes then seals. never had to use a plug on them when i had them. Something i cannot say about the spez or other types of UST tyres i have had on my bike. normally have to use a plug to close the large holes.
  12. Dispicable. What kit did they have on?
  13. Thanks guys, I got some last weekend and have started using it. It definitely works very well. As well as any of the chamois creams i have used. i have used it this weekend on a 6 hour dirt ride and normally i would have been chafed en sore after such an ordeal, but i must say that although i was a bit tender there were no visible chafing. Two thumbs up for the Milko Balm.
  14. Foam grips. So how did he get it this light ? I cannot see anyone riding the epic with normal tires, so just by using normal UST tyres with stans (+-700g per tyre) gives you 1.4kg right there. How in the world can you get it so light ? and still do the epic ?
  15. I have heard about runners using a product called "Runners Up" that helps with the chafing aparently. anyone used it before for running or cycling ?
  16. Anyone tried Milko Balm as Chamois Cream yet ? I know you are supposed to get it at the pharmacy but i have been to 5 already and i get the strangest looks from the pharmacist every single time with a "What do you want to use it for ?" So can anyone who have bought it please tell me from where in the northern suburbs/ table view area of cape town.
  17. I have one. it weighs 11.6 kg with ust tubeless tires, stans, bottle cage and rav-x ergo bar-ends. It really rides well and the suspension is very very very plush. single track is a breaze and uphills in pro-pedal mode is really efficient.
  18. Yes. probably cause you never clean it. if you clean it after every ride it will last a long time. I use sram pc991 hollow pin chains and they just last and last, but i clean them (take em off and clean them in degreaser ) after every ride and relube.
  19. are there no mechanics reading this forum?
  20. Can anyone tell me if i can fit m960(hollowtech) small chainring to the newer m970 crancks. I understand that the middle and large one looks different because of the spider, but the small one looks kinda the same ? any mechanics out there ?
  21. My feelings: If we are going to go over boyes drive then the amount of people that will go under 3 hours will be cut in half. And i count myself as one of those that will not make it under 3hours again. And the amount of people that will crash will double. especially the tight left hander just below that steepest part right at the end after the road splits. alot of crashes waiting to happen.
  22. anyone know what happened to the whine to whales thing that was mentioned on the hub at the end of last year ?
