Gx with an XX1 chain - you hear of people getting crazy mileage. I use a Shimano XT cassette and XT chain but to be honest all of the 12speed Shimano cassettes are the same you just save some weight as you go up in the range. The nice thing about running a Shimano cassette is that you can buy the 10 and 12t sprocket as a stock item. Because they have the smalest surface area they tend to wear out quicker especially if riding flatter terrain. Replace that along with your chain and you are good to go. I have about 13000km on my XT cassette and I have used about 4 chains and I have replaced the 10 and 12t once.

I think that is the reasoning but as a “down country” bike I think the trade off for the 34 is worth it.

You can find a Pro riding most XC/Marathon bikes, I wouldn't use that as a reliable measure when looking at bikes. If the OP is looking for a bike for longer rides only being able to carry one bottle on the Top Fuel is a downside that should be mentioned. Most manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on their frames Merida included. When considering entry-level 12-speed groupsets (Deore, SLX vs SX, NX) I would choose Shimano every time.

Are they all running disc brakes, are the hubs QR or TA? Tyres will be a good start, upgrading three wheelsets even with entry level options will start adding up. Maxxis Crossmarks are known to hold up well, so perhaps they will make a good choice for a 29" commuter. Lights are a great upgrade to the overall safety especially when commuting at dawn and dusk.
