  1. Bobby Behan of Spaz fame posted pics of a ride at Jonkers last week. The place is gutted like Tokai but he rode the never ending story single track and advised that Ace Of Spades will be in there shortly to start sorting out the rest of our favourite trails. #sonotTMNP. Good news for us.
  2. SDG make brilliant saddles but that price is just insane - another bike industry rip off. I'll stick to my lightish, wide nosed cromo railed Spesh Phenom Gel I picked up on sale for R250.
  3. You ignored a host of other factors there in your obsession with wheel base and stem length
  4. Lekker looking bike, but that' s not what I'd call a short stem on there. Then again compared to a normal dirt roadie stem maybe it is. Kudos to Pyga for recognising the need for bikes that can actually be ridden offroad properly, unlike most steep long stemmed marathon bikes which are hopeless in technical terrain. The bike industry in this country has been selling the wrong bikes to people for years thanks to the SA belief that marathon racing is the definition of mountain biking....
  5. Thanks, every bit as bad as Tokai by the look of it. Hopefully the little bit of rain will have damped down any remnants of the fire...
  6. SANP may well have some pics up on their site or forums. As far as Jonkers is concerned, I was advised by the Stellies trailbuliding FB page that it is open but that most single track is still dangerous and damaged. This created the impression in my mind at least that these tracks are open but it would not be advisable to ride them. If anybody has been out there exploring or has a a clearer statement of what is actually legally open to ride at Jonkers, please post it.
  7. I agree. Any large organization especially statutory ones like parks deserve some decent crit to help them perform better. It seems to me some people would rather highlight what they perceive to be the worst in the MTB user group rather than examine the actions and behaviour of the large organization in question...
  8. Okay so in your opinion rehab means closure. You see I question that big time. the two are not mutually exclusive.
  9. All I can say is Redbull TV - works brilliantly for me.
  10. Isnt it the case that there is an old seed bed there dating back to before the forestry activity but that the same species are probably alive and well all over the rest of the mountain where no logging has taken place? Some of the slopes have already been deforested for some time but I have not seen reports of any red data species or anything new coming up there. I must go through my copies of veld and Flora or perhaps contact Bot Soc... Fact is that there is a bias against bikes at TMNP that as far as I can see has no basis in science. When i queried this all I got was a blank stare, if emails can stare. So they are not even prepared to justify their own policy. Thats never a good thing for building good relationships with the people whose respect you demand.
  11. You may be right on the scale of the burn, but large numbers of still green pines remain at both places and the fynbos/veldt looks the same in the pics I have seen ie burned to the ground. Jonkers is bigger and the structure of the slopes may well be a bit different, so I am prepared to be convinced that there are differences, other than the management style of those who control the places. The fact is TMNP does not appear to have considered the reaction to the closure and the inevitable pressure on other venues in the Park. I am sure there are more hikers visiting other areas because of Silvermines closure too. I wonder what they will do about it - other than suggest that we bother the City and ride in green belts. Oh, and I am not suggesting for a minute that people should challenge the ban by breaking it and riding there. The pen may well be mightier than the sword. Last time I looked the Cape Times still had a letters page...
  12. They will never ever get away with a total ban on cycling. They probably do like the idea though because they hate having to manage bikes and other activities and the user issues and so on. They have used the fire as a reason to close vast swathes of the moungtain off for an extremely long period. If they had a more community based approach, they would have been more forthcoming. How much ill will have they generated towards them by the long closure? If Cape Point had been burned as badly do you think, as their main money spinner it would be closed? Not likely - busses of tourists would still be hitting the place anyway. Thats a R90 bar per annum cash cow. Sadly, a few mountain bikers local or otherwise, dont count for as much revenue so far more easy to exclude.. I dont condone breaking rules for no reason, but when rules are imposed that seem to be unfair it is human nature to feel aggrieved and people react. Look at Cape Nature and Jonkers - partially opened. Trail builders have been in to check and close off dangerous trails and the place will possibly fully open again in six months. Thats what i'd like to be seeing and hearing from the TMNP side.
  13. No No No....Why do bike shops have to look like Truworths - I find the look and feel doesn't inspire confidence like a smaller shop with the owners behind the counter and working on the bikes themselves does. Always wonder how little the sales peeps know and if they actually ride bikes...
  14. Does it matter whether it goes down well or not? It might just put a stop to the BS and foster a somewhat more respectful response in future. I don't think there's a conspiracy - just a badly run organization that has a problem with the truth. No wonder they don't want to put anything in writing - it could very easily be used against them when they do a flip flop. As for the reasons given - I'll say it again - if there is room for scientists and lumberjacks and Sentech ( you dont seriously believe their preposterous claim that sentech will not be allowed access to fix faults? They probably have a right to access the antennae ) then there is room for Tokai MTB to have a one off visit to check on the trails. Jonkers is partially open already. Bennet has been in securing damaged trails to prevent access for safety reasons. It looks every bit as bad as Tokai from the pics I have seen... But ya why fight a battle when you can win the war eh?
  15. If its a lie, it shows bad faith on TMNP's part and further erodes my and many other peoples faith in them or our ability to believe anything that they say or promise. That it does not bother you, bothers me. By the same token, what could it hurt to allow a few guys in to assess the trail situation and provide them with some advice and assistance?
  16. The statement by TMNP at the meeting on Monday that nobody, not even Baboon Monitors are allowed into Tokai used as justification for denying the Tokai MTB committee access to assess the trail situation. which on the available info ex FB, appears to be false.
  17. Stop talking sense around here and follow the sheep with deep wallets...
  18. The newsletter should have gone out again after the fire and keep going out with updates even if its just to restate the status quo. Tokai MTB hasn't died with the fire as it may well appear to the subscribers. At the moment TMNP is doing a better job of communicating than we are.
  19. DJR - it might surprise you to know that the city manages numerous nature reserves in the greater CT area. They have problems that SANP doesn't even know about - crime on a daily basis, destruction and vandalism etc etc.
