  1. Guys, beware of taking any advice whatsoever from a SANP/TMNP official. They are not qualified or trained to offer legal opinions. I have not seen the latest ticket but it sounds as if it is a statutory offence in terms of NEMA ( I mentioned this earlier in a post) The ticket I saw for swimming in a dam you were not supposed to stated that payment would result in a criminal record. Its only traffic tickets that are the exception to the rule as far as I know... If you get one of these don't pay it. Go to court and ask to speak to the prosecutor in the court in question and then ask for the control prosecutor and ask him/her to withdraw the ticket. They probably will.
  2. Yes, that's precisely equivalent to riding your bike on a green belt. On second thoughts, not at all. The people who argue that bikes must stay off green belts remind me of bike apartheid security police. There is a sign so you may not be here. You can't be here because you are on wheels, never mind human powered wheels We don't like you because we have all sorts of preconceived notions about bikes and bike riding people and most of all we don't like to share our amenities with people who are different to us. Horse riders are not different to us because we know them and they are rich and shout loudly to get what they want. Joggers are a problem at times in large groups, but there is no sign to say they are not allowed so they can play. Thinking of forming a liberation movement called the MTBeer Congress. Lets meet somewhere where there is beer and hatch a fiendish plot...
  3. I do at times and they have never ever caught anything. Besides, riding could be allowed and dogs kept out. If your argument is sound it would be quite easy for TMNP to justify the selective opening on that basis.
  4. Thing is that the same thing happened at Jonkers. Jeep tracks and some single track is open however. I drove Ou Kaaps this weekend. There is tonnes of fresh new foliage growing all over the place. The few animals that did survive have plenty of cover and probably even some food now. Anyway, a jeep track offers no cover and bikes dont ride in the bushes, so....
  5. Flippit not another common sense post on this thread...
  6. Tell me about it - I have been riding there and in the Green Belts for decades and now all of a sudden these Johnny come lately's are causing problems and attracting all sorts of attention on our dreadful illegal activities. I feel like a Rhino poacher now.
  7. Why not? I wonder if they are doing anything and where the process is. They could communicate this and take ownership of the process too. That would require pro-active engagement with the public of course and is wishful thinking no doubt. Good public relations 101.
  8. But in part by what they didn't do, say or announce.
  9. Its more than crap communications, its an almost paralytic incapacity to do anything practical at anything other than the pace of a geriatric sloth. Who reading the first email would believe that weeks later nothing has actually changed? Edit - actually thats dumb. Who in their right mind would think SANP would have got their act together by now...
  10. No, imagine again, not trespassing. Its a statutory offence in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, although exactly which section or regulation I don't know.
  11. You may well find that the ticket is simply thrown out of court by the prosecutor. I doubt it has legal validity. I would argue that there is no confusion. There is an email from the area manager confirming that the trail would be opened on a trial basis. That includes the jeep track from the neck to the start of the single track. In fact SANP even requested cyclists park at the neck and not at Southern Cross. So much for following through from their side.
  12. The announcements were made by Rob Vogel. Many, including me missed the fact that it was open, but not actually open because the signage had not changed yet. ( how bizarre is this really - temp signs could have been put up immediately)This was weeks ago and still nothing. Now word has got out - the only good news to come out of recent interactions with SANP was bound to spread like wild fire. Now we have no Tokai and officials wasting money ticketing people riding a trail that has been ridden for years by a few cyclists without any problems. I have been riding that trail for 20 years on and off. Now because its been legalized although actually not because a sign has not been changed, we have rangers ticketing people. Vintage SANP shooting themselves in the foot.
  13. That is an XTR, but no, Saint levers are I Spec compatible as is the Shifter pod he is using.
  14. Olympic in Lansdowne Rd have RnR Blue as at last week Friday. R115 if memory serves.
  15. Yep, heard you can buy them separately. thing is I use the dual position a lot - turns the bike into a real all rounder, so not keen to go that expensive route yet. More air and running more low speed comp will suffice if I need it I think. Just wondering if anyone had heard of any other tricks.
  16. I have a dual position 160 mm Pike 26" fork. The stiffness is mind blowing compared to a fox 32. My brakes suddenly felt much stronger and the bike tracks and steers much better than a thinner fork. I don't have the tokens option but have found the fork copes pretty well with drops and steep stuff. Without access to Tokai I havent tested it properly tho. I did bottom it out once quite hard on a fast high drop I landed to flat and that made me think I either need to up the low speed comp or find a way to make the airspring more progressive? Any suggestions?
  17. That big Liteville is too cool. Don't they offer different wheel size - ie smaller out back even down to a 24" /26" combo?
  18. That may be correct but so what - TMNP needs to know people are unhappy with their management approach which is heavy handed and often rather thinly justified in logic and science. My 2c and personal opinion once again:-)
  19. As residents of Tokai some of the T nT peeps have actually been invited to the meeting. His call to attend has a lot to do with the perceived poor handling of the closure by TMNP. Thats the reality and the perception. Why does anyone need to be protective of TMNP - they can look after themselves? TMNP should call a meeting to discuss the issues people have and take the crit on the chin and be able to justify why Tokai is still totally closed while at Jonkers we have a very clever balance between the public's interest, business in the form of the same Cape Pine, and nature conservation. Hell, they are already rebuilding trails at Jonkers. My 2c and my personal opinion :-)
  20. Thats a strange gearing choice - my 2013 Reign came with 26/38 gearing and 11/36 rear cluster if memory serves. No need for a 22 if you have a 36 out back. Another error - Strava times downhill will definitely be better on this bike than a hard tail, and that' s all that counts surely? :-)
