  1. Luke, I think you unleashed the masses on the SA-Active website... It has now become SA-Inactive. Hot dang it is incredibly slow!
  2. This is odd, the pre entry website was full of notices sying it would cost R50, but that was up until the 24th... BUMMER though.
  3. Ja jo. That was a rough one bru. Jo.
  4. I'm going to see what I can manage. I've been itching to restore the bike for ages, well if making it an SSĀ® can be considered restoring. The restoration itch is accompanied by a CRC order itch. Will see how it goes and keep you okes posted.
  5. Ag the setup system is passed its replacement date thingy, the levers are broken, it looks all rusty etc but the pads look ok-ish. The brakes are crazy stiff, just ziltch power.
  6. Recently got given a stok-oue Giant Boulder rigid frame with cantilever brakes (if you don't know what they are I fear you may not be able to help). They are poo. Old, perished and sand covered Prestik would do a better job at stopping my bike. Has anyone upgraded them or is there a better, yet similar, replacement set out there? I'd like to maintain the late 80s cutting edge technology which adorns this baby, so I'd prefer to stick with cantilevers. Shot.

I agree ,could have taken more photos of the paint itself - I was just not keen to move the FD and have to re-adjust my gears 2 days before Attakwas, and also risk chipping it off further. I do use engine degreaser, but only on the chain, when its actually off the bike, so it barely comes into contact with the paint, if at all.

I've tried the LBS route. I think I'll speak to Dragons directly now. The LBS owner also cc'd me in on the emails and thier initial reply. He says if I do it privately I should get a + response from Dragons.

Flip those where hot bikes! I've had a few Giants: Beaut (think this is what it was called) - stolen, ATX 760 (with stem shock!) - sold, ATX 780 - stolen, ATX 870 - STOLEN (I was allowed to take this bike to school on Fridays ;-) ), Iguana (at this point my dad got over buying $$$ bikes for the kids) - Stolen but recovered, wiped out then couldn't get a shock so it became a rigid, Yukon SE - Stolen, Boulder - all vrot now, Boulder again - my dad reclaimed it, Boulder SE - gave it to my uncle, ANTHEM X2 (started to get serious now with earning a proper salary) - LOVE IT - paint issues, and last but not least my latest project a 1991 Giant Boulder with which I plan on doing my first Argus!

I'm sure Giant (Dragons) will be reasonable. If it means that I have to get thr frame resprayed I won't mind as long as i) its quick and ii) they will still cover me if the frame brakes.

It came off when off, i.e. started flaking, when I pulled the tape off, note pulled not ripped, after Sabie late in December. I do see they have a 1 year warranty on the paint. The stuff I used is used by a friend on her carbon shwinn, and she is a professional, so if it works on carbon I don't see why its not safe for a metal frame.

Yes the GIANT logo painted under the FD is completely flaked off. I'll take the bike to Dragons and have them have a look at it.

Yes its just a few extra general photos I've added. The rub is pretty bad though, considering the bike is only 5months old.

  17. Sho, Inwas shocked when I heard it this morning. RIP Carla.
  18. I've dislocated my elbow, and broken a piece off the radial head, about half the size of your pinky nail. I was 17 at the stage, all this while doing dirt jumps on an MTB. I LAUNCHED into the air, landed on my right side, put my left arm down and it popped out right in front of my eyes. I remembered a doc saying put it back ASAP so I yanked my arm and it jumped back. I think that is were the radial head broke. I walked down the little hill with my 12 year old brother frantically cycling to call my family. I got to one of them brown Eskom boxes, lay back against it and it popped out again. Almost fainted. The orthopedic surgeon wanted to give me an artificial joint. 4 weeks before matric exams, 3 before matric farewell. Temporary sling for 2 weeks, was swollen so badly. Oh yes, the little piece of bone was never removed from my arm... All in all, 9 weeks. THEN the physio started. Man that was painful. 3 years later I decided to join the gym, 5kg MAX on my left arm. 0 strength... Took me 2 years to even consider riding a bike, and when I did it hurt like hell. 9 years later: 90% mobility in the joint, if I fall it hurts way more then normal, and after the Sabie last month, a fall on 24/12 and the ATTAKWAS on Saturday I realised it is badly inflamed. So I've booked a visit to the doc just before I read this thread. Lets hope its not too bad.
  19. Bananas, Dates (maar daai goed act soos rocket fuel by 'n mans se exhaust valve so sal maar moet terug hou - I annoyed a few guys en-route during Sabie, especially day 4), Raisings is lekker maklik om on the go te eet and then to drink 1 EPIC pro bottle and a camelbak with the coldest water I can find.
  20. I use that route for training rides A LOT! B@st@rds.
  21. Nope its a friend of mine, I REALLY HOPE HE GETS IT BACK.
  22. Black Carbon Raleigh RM 8.0 stolen in Cape Town on 09/01/2011. Frame has a lot of old duct tape on the tubing. Please PM me if you see it or know of anyone who come across this bike on any website or for sale ad.
  23. Not sure of the spelling but you get the idea... A dremmel tool is a small hand held power tool, well, you get a battery operated one, which you can use for delicate grinding, such as burrs (burs?) on casette rings...
  24. Hahahahaha, I've been to Shimano's guys in Joburg in person and it was an eye opener to say the least. Needless to say it seems my LBS mechanics are not too clued up on what worn cassettes look/feel like. I was told my gears were slipping with a new chain due to the cassette being worn (700km, visible burrs present). So I replaced it with a spankingly new one; same issue. New chain and cassette... So I (me, not the mechanics) rode the bike and told them its the fron chain ring (~ 1500km on it) and tada. Good as new. Took the cassette to Shimano in Jozi prior to the Sabie Experience and they reckon it'd last. Not ONE issue with shifting, come mud (my DT was COMPLETELY cover as only Sabie nows how to) or water or clay or sand or anything. Funny enough after day 2 of 4 when I was planning to replace the cassette and chain, ALL the burrs on the cassette had been ground off by the mud and the gear changes were still clean and perfect. Worn cassette.... Throw in some mud and let it grind the crap away. Chain has just reached 50% wear (short life due to Sabie mud and so on,) but it is still going strong. I've also been told that using a a dremmel on the burrs (ONLY, I repeat, ONLY the burrs) will help an XTR cassette reach over 10000km. Straight out of the horses' mouth (The oke is not a horse though, and if he does it, I'll take his word for it and do it myself.) If you try it, just don't change the cassette profile. That WILL efffff your gears changes up...
  25. Let's hope this doesn't happen to another cyclist ;-)
