  2. Read this, wanted one, bought one. The front of the helmet on your brow is so low that it bounces on my glasses. Moered the bridge of my nose properly and also pushes on glasses behind my ears. Found to be very uncomfortable. New helmet in the classifieds shortly.
  3. I may have taken this tapering business a bit seriously!!
  4. Hi What is Mt Anderson trip? Looking for some African excursions. Thanks
  5. Need some new tyres for the ride (please note ride, not race!). Leaning to Maxxis Ikon EXO, front and rear. Any advice? I dont think its very technical so need as little rolling resistance and as few punctures as possible.
  6. The 2016 Eurosteel Drak Descent MTB Challenge proved to be all that the organisers promised it to be. While the distances were not too big – 50km and 40 km respectively – the first stage race on the 2016 MTB calendar proved to be a surprisingly technical challenge and a great fitness checker so early in the season. As Andrew Hill said, “the event, being so early in the season provided a good platform to push the body out of the comfort zone and into a place last visited late in 2015. The additional stage race factor really was another alluring feature I liked about the event.” The race was 90% rideable for 90% of the riders and traversed the most stunning single track on offer, anywhere, period! Many of the competitors have described the event as the most beautiful that they have ever done! Imagine cycling along eland and cattle paths, down a steep sided valley, along the uMzimkulu River and its tributaries, with water so clean and pure that you could drink from it. In addition there is an array of bridges, of varying length, affording lovely views of canoeists paddling below you as they splash their way along the annual N3TC Drak Challenge canoe race! The Spoors Team and many in the Underberg Community worked furiously on the Drak Descent route for 2016, including new single track that challenged and thrilled the most widely travelled cyclist. This was real Mountain Biking traversing terrain that is spectacular and challenging, running through areas that are untouched and offer what has been described by many as “South African MTB’s best kept secret!” Not only do you get the opportunity to cycle in the pristine Southern Drakensberg, World Heritage Site, but your entry also gets you to contribute to allowing others to enjoy what you have. The Spoors Team donates to various charities in the area such as the Restmount Children’s Home, Sister Abegail Ntleko’s Orphanage and also provides employment for locals that would otherwise not have any work at all – one grade 12 student even worked on tracks in order to pay towards his first year University Fees! “I am sure that the Drak Descent has already gained the reputation of being a mountain bike event that is tough and technical. You must not change this. It is what will set your event apart from the many others out there. Although the route is technical it is almost all rideable, you just have to be strong enough. Your event will challenge mountain bikers across the country. Just as the Drak canoe marathon is known for its’ technical nature, so too will the mountain bike event be the same. I really don’t think that I have ever ridden any mountain bike event, anywhere in the country that is as challenging technically. Many events have short technical sections but the Drak Descent challenges one fully throughout the 2 days. I see your route becoming more of an attraction to the Underberg community than the uMzimkhulu River in years to come.” Farmer Glen Haw On Day 1, Brendon Davids, Andrew Warr, Ty White and Andrew Hill were tied in first position, this was as a result of a wonderful gesture of good sportsmanship. According to Andrew Hill, they “traded a couple of blows in the form of attacks but neither team could stay away for long enough to take the line honours. In the final 2kms we reached a point where the bunting had been broken and we had two choices, it was decided that we would ride in the general direction of the finish line and cross the line together for a tie where neither team would be 1st or 2nd. The sportsmanship was well received and we had time to reflect on the amazing trails ridden on day one.” Frankie du Toit and Hayley Smith were in a commanding position from the word go and finished in first place, 7 minutes ahead of the 2nd place ladies. Siyabonga Njiva put in a formidable solo performance to finish just inside the top 10 on Day 1 in a time of 2:07:19. Day 2 turned out to be a perfect day, even after the heavy rain in the evening which had created some interesting single track, ranging from muddy to moist and even washing it away in sections. After a very quick start, which succeeded in catching the rest of the field off guard, Brendon Davids and Andrew Warr of the Kargo Pro MTB Team, as well as Andrew Hill and Ty White formed another formidable breakaway. Their pace was electrifying and relentless, with both teams pushing themselves to their limits. Ty White and Andrew Hill managed to open up a 15 second gap over the Kargo Pro Riders, Brendon Davids and Andrew Warr. Unfortunately, into the final 2 Km, Hill and White missed a turn and had to backtrack, negating their hard-earned lead. This took the race to an exciting sprint finish for the overall win, with Brendon Davids and Andrew Warr taking the honours as first team to break the tape. After a commanding start, the Kargo Pro MTB Lady’s Team of Frankie du Toit and Hayley Smith finished in first place, 15 minutes ahead of the 2nd place ladies. A huge thank you must go out to the Underberg Community that assisted with this event, without everyone pulling together, the event would not take place and the comments would be far less flattering!
  7. Only about 18km or so actually, but who's counting!

Medical and Safety Berg Protection Services under Doctor Grant Lindsay will be handling any medical issues. ICE stickers with contact details will be stuck on the back of all number boards. We must stress that the race is challenging and technical in nature and we request that riders ride at speeds suitable to their capabilities. We really want to avoid any accidents. Friday 22 January – 6.00pm: “Meet the Sponsors” and Landowners Evening “Meet the Sponsors and Landowners” evening will be held at Sani Spoors (2kms on the Drak Gardens road) on Friday 22rd Jan at around 6.00pm. It is hoped that after Registration which is at the same venue riders will stay and mingle with our sponsors , landowners and other riders and enjoy a few drinks and food that will be for sale at the Olde Ducke Restaurant. You will be able to select your meat from our local butchery, Underberg Meat Supplies who will be present and then braai it yourself on the fires provided. Administration Issues Unfortunately, as with most matters in life, there are the inevitable admin issues to be handled :- Cycling SA - Day LicensesAs the Drak Descent is a Cycling SA sanctioned event there is a legal requirement on Sani Spoors, as the race organisers, to collect CSA Day Licenses at R35 per day (or R70 for the event) from anyone who is not licensed with Cycling SA for 2016. It is up to each rider to be able to prove at Registration that they have purchased a 2016 Cycling SA license – or they will have to pay the R70 prior to us being able to issue them with a race number board. Prizes and Prize Sponsors As advised on the Sani Spoors webpage there will be no cash prizes awarded. There will however be product prizes handed out at the end of day 2 for the top Men’s, Women’s, Mixed and junior winners, second and third positions. Sani Spoors is also sponsoring product prizes on both Day 1 and Day 2 - to the first three men and women in both the Fun Ride and the Trail Run. Two exciting lucky dip prizes will be drawn at prize giving on Day 2 - from all the stage race and the fun ride/run entries – one of the lucky dip prizes is sponsored by Kalbo Designs (1 x 10 full conversion kit) valued at R2500. Emergency Spares and Bike Repairs Good news is that Howick Cycle and Gear, represented by Travis Boden (076 913 3879) and Sean Symons (072 454 7689), will be present at Sani Spoors from Friday afternoon/evening to assist you with minor bike maintenance and repairs. Being seasoned stage race riders you would all know that you should arrive with your bike newly serviced and maintained!! Farm Equipment and Garden Centre (033 - 701 1119) in Underberg (next to the Shell Garage and KFC) also stock basic cycle spares and equipment. Water Tables We will have two water tables on day 1 and three on day 2 as well as the river along a large portion of the route. This is a lot for the distances but once again we must stress it is a challenging route. We do request after last year’s ride where we experienced extreme heat that riders take their own liquid and not to rely solely on the water tables. The river is also a real option for filling up water bottles if desperate, but a real way to cool down if you feel you are overheating. (Just watch out for canoeists who definitely have the right of way in the river). Rider Shuttles Please consider reducing your Carbon Footprint and easing congestion in our mountains by making use of the excellent fundraising Shuttle Service being offered by Underberg High School. They will transport your car for you and will shuttle it to the end of the race. There is also a bus that they will run. Contact Jenny Grinwis on 082 376 0424 or jengrin@telkomsa.net Race Tip If the weather over the last week or two is anything to go by, then one does not want to try and predict the weather normally at this time of the year we can expect hot or overcast mornings, with wet and stormy afternoons. The trails dry out quickly, but depending on the most recent storm/s there are the inevitable soggy and wet patches (and the possibility of falling into the river, of course!) so suggest you lube your bike well before and during the event. There will also be some emergency lube available at the water tables. In conclusion If you hear that your team mate has not received an email Newsletter please ask him/her to email me their correct email address. We have had a fair amount of difficulty with some of the emails coming back “Undelivered”. Otherwise, less than a week to go (no festive season excuses anymore!!) and watch your emails and Facebook for more updates. We are looking really forward to hosting you in Underberg for a ride that promises to be challenging, exciting and beautiful. Our target at the start of preparation for this year’s route was to prepare a route that we felt 90% of riders would be able to ride 90% of the way. We think we have achieved this.
