  1. Don't forget, your bike, especially MTB's can also a weapon.

On the assumption it's not an ambush situation, you can certainly put one or even two guys in hospital with your bike as a weapon.

You can also possibly use it to defend against being stabbed with a knife.

Your best chance is to think through the possible scenarios and how you can possibly respond to them.  If you don't, you will probably freeze-up and not respond in the best way possible.

  2. It's important to be very observant (almost suspicious) in every situation.  Avoid places where you can not see at least 30-50m in front of you and when you do pass close to a potential hiding places, be even more alert.

The biggest problem is being ambushed when you cant see them coming at you.  Unfortunately I prefer riding completely alone which I know put myself at great risk.

It's certainly not fool proof but I more or less now have a route where 95% of the time there is very limited opportunities to be ambushed.

It is very sad that we are in this situation and have to resort to extreme & ridiculous measures just to be SAFE.

AL the best to Nick and his family.

  3. Also, AGREE post it !

Don't know why but I see a lot of dumb-ass riders on the road these days, sounds like they are simply everywhere.  I say name and shame as much as possible, it simply must stop or the freedom/privilege may be taken away for EVERYONE.

That's why I limit the my time on the "road" as much as possible, just enough to get out of my neighborhood and then on the off-road stuff, it's a lot more fun than boring road riding anyway.

  4. Yes.  About 2 Bar for allover, if you riding more sandy conditions you can go down to about 1.5 Bar.

That being said, everyone have their own preference, you will surely get a lot of different responses on this ...

  5. I agree with the_bob just checking from the classifieds you can get a bike like this,

    https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/dual-suspension-bikes/415106/rocky-mountain

Agree, this is a much better bike than the Scott and seems to be in good condition.

I had a Scott Spark 950 (Al though), now have a 2013 RM Element 970 RSL.  Besides the carbon frame, the difference is chalk and cheese.

And its not because I'm a RM fan ...

  6. I'm a big believer in the free market principle.

If you like it an want it and the price is right - you'll buy it.

If none of those criteria are met then you won't buy it.

What the classifieds doesn't need is emotion. All this oh he took too long to respond, oh he changed the price, oh he has been online and read my message and not responded, oh he changed the tyres and price drama is unnecessary. This isn't Days of our Lives.

You want it buy it. You don't want it don't buy it.

    I agree 100%.

  7. Yes, it does not sit "lekker"

But I'm afraid it happens a lot more than you think .. I generally have specific items I want, I thus get an instant alert when an item becomes available. First thing I do is take a screen shot of the item and the description.

Whether the seller maybe changes the price regardless of interest, maybe correcting, or trying a higher price first, or whether from interest ... it happens more than you would imagine.

Since comments aren't available anymore it might now be more prevalent .... a quick check will be to ask "Bikehub admin" to run a database query against classifieds' history where the price increased after the initial post?

Whether it happen often or not, it does NOT make it right.  Do your homework and get the price realistic in the first place then there is no need to change it as an after thought.

If the price change, I walk away.

    Just my humble opinion ...

  8. I think new bikes have become more affordable. i would personally rather spend my money on a new bike with mid range components than a 2015 model high end bike.plus, i get a warranty.

If you have the money to waste, good for you.  The only way I would buy new is a frame on special and build the bike myself.  Otherwise if you buy wisely, you can buy a 10x better used bike (or spares for that matter) than buying new.

Also new parts only on special or used.  Even if I have the money, simply cant justify spending more than double as what is realistically possible.

I didn't sell much so far but I managed to sell a few items quickly since I asked for decent realistic price.

  9. This is the problem these days, one simply dont know who you can trust and who not!  Peoples word is simply not their honor anymore (example Mr "Emazing").

I bought a few times without verifying or seeing the parts, luckily didn't burn my fingers yet, but it seems to be only a matter of time.

  10. I would go for a used bike if I were you, you can get a pretty decent one for R10K.  Once you get familiar with the whole thing, your next buy would be that much easier and you will know a lot better what you like, don't like and what work for you.

Every person's preference on bikes are different and the amount of options on each and every part of a bike is mind boggling.  You can take almost any part, value ranging between a few bucks to thousands.

Were is my childhood days were the only options were Raleigh & Peugeot ....   :D.

Get a used bike, and get going as a start.
