  1. Everyone always says so but I do not always see it that way. Been looking at the classifieds and various groups. Now and then there is a good deal on a modern second hand bike, but many are also outdated with 2x or 1x11 groupsets. Also taking a risk by not knowing service history.

Will go have a look at bikemarket before I buy and continue to watch the classifieds to rule out second hand or possibly fo the route.

I think the Silverback Stratos AL1 is highly spec'd for the price, which is why I am leaning towards it.

Good, as long as you keep an open mind about it.  I got a great carbon fibre dual suspension bike for R25k, a bit old (2013) but still in excellent condition with all XT drivetrain and RaceFace cranks.  Granted it is 1x11 and its going to cost me a fair wack to go to 1x12 but at that price its absolutely worth it.

Good luck.  Get a good frame & fork, the rest you can always upgrade in time.

  2. It is a very nice bike, just not sure about the SRAM brakes and X-Fusion shock.

On most brands I am a Medium, on some a Small, on the brink of Medium. Thinking of stopping at the Giant dealer in JHB tomorrow. Will have a look.

Just wondering about the X-Fusion shock and SRAM Brakes on it, otherwise very well spec'd. Wonder what they weigh.

Will hopefully be able to test ride a few this weekend. Sure that will give some sort of idea for feel.

Are you fixed & firm on buying a "new" bike?  If not you can buy so much better for R40k.

  3. I used the "Shoe Booster" and "Device Booster" before.  If you are on Vitality already and you exercise regularly anyway its worth it getting a couple of bucks back over a number of months.

But it certainly not a super good deal at all.  The apple watch thing is great since you dont pay a cent if you keep hitting you targets, but the rest is mediocre at best.

I do like the Gym booster though, both my and the wifes already reduced membership are paid back every month if you get the exercise goals.

  4. We have had a problem with neighbours the last 2 Saturdays with music from a total different culture being listened way louder than normal. I manage a holiday resort so the first Saturday I called the cops who are about a km from our place, they said that according to municipal bylaws, noise pollution is a problem for the municipal law enforcement. I was totally dumbstruck, started phoning 20h55, made my last call at 02h30, that after the cops and law enforcement was at my place and the house of the culprits several times. The music stopped at around 04h00.

They just don't give a [emoji90] anymore. I told my father in law today that it seems to me as if law obedience has totally flown out the window in SA in the last month. With the murder rates, hijackings etc the last month or so.

Next time they party, through a stink bomb (smells like the worst kind of frot eggs) or two over the fence.  They will break up the party very quickly ...  :D

  5. Pretty expensive fix for me. I'm tempted to "borrow" the SO's NX cassette for this weekend to test.

If it works I'm "only" out R3500 (includes chain which needs replacement anyways) compared to switching to to microspline freehub + shimano slx cassette + chain at R4100

I feel your pain, thats why I'm still 11 speed.  If I go 12 speed, I want to do XT for shifter, derailleur and chain with a Garbaruk cassette, and then also the small but expensive DT Microspline freebody.  Thats going to a crap load of bucks, hence will have to wait.

My current 11 speed setup is still good for quite a while.

  6. Having a similar problem on my bike at the moment. In the biggest 3 gears at the back it's starting to sound like i'm grinding something. On the repair stand I am hearing what sounds like bearings running rough so I guess I'm stripping down the hub and checking it out this weekend.

Funny enough when the chain is freshly lubed the grinding sound goes away.

Another noise was also called by the chain touching the bottom of the cage. Straightened it out and things seem quite again.

Just the ticking left on gear 4 or 5 from the top to find and fix.

Not impressed with this Sunrace / SLX combo to be honest.

SLX may still be OK but Sunrace, no thank you not for me.  I remove & replaced it as soon as the opportunity popped up on the hub.

  7. This is the best way to put it. I am currently doing a tour up to Namibia (hopefully) and quite often I ride on the other side of the road. It is easier to see what is coming and take the appropriate action. I get a lot of crazy looks but for me it is the safest way. If I piss one or two people off so be it. Living in a country where there is so little respect for life or driving I only look after myself.

I stayed in Namibia for more than a year.  Riding is a lot safer there than in SA, most of my rides there were single or at most 2 people, enjoy, there are some awesome places to ride

  8. Surely it means that the new "owner" must have also pushed start and stop three times...ie pretty familiar with how the unit works...

It still need to sync to ilubinsky's Polar Flow account for him to be able to see it.  If the device (phone or PC) used for syncing is not logged into his account it will not sync to his account but rather to "the new owners account" (if he have/created one).

I fail to see how this is possible.  Would be glad to be enlightened.

PS, I will phone the guys at IHF (the Polar agents in SA), maybe they can explain to me how its possible.

  9. I'm not sure if through Strava, the V650 has a beacon facility. If you go on-line and query your GPS device, it can send its position.

Thanks, I did not know this.  Would that be in Polar Flow?  If so where?  I cant find it.

  10. Thanks located it via satellite in the parking lot at Bidon the workers had it around there houses offered them a reward as I saw the movement on strava. I still do not have it back hopefully they will give it to me this weekend

I also have a Polar V650.  How do you locate it when no data is uploaded?  The unit don't upload GPS data automatically, have to be synced with either a phone or PC to Polar Flow and from there to Strava.

If this is possible, I would like to know how for incase mine also get lost.

  11. The last descent SA contender other than GM was Andrew Neethling.

I don't think Theo has the drive (hunger) to make it as a racer.

    But I do ...  .

Only problem is I'm missing the skills, ba****, age, weight, fitness and maybe also looks to be on GM's level.

    Thanks Theo,  :D

  12. Sure!

And beware Ézaro is short but ... very steep!

Only 1,8km but sure we will see some riders put a foot on tarmac.

Yes, you read it well. 29%.

That is a nasty little climb indeed, going to make it very interesting.

  13. thats a comparison of 11 speed chains...

    we're talking 12 speed here.

True, although SRAM and Shimano lifted their game on 12sp, the Connex chains should still be better.  Since they only recently added 12sp to the range, this test is not yet available for 12sp, not that I can find anyway.

Edit:  I just saw the only 12 speed chain out yet (12SO similar as 11SO) is about half as good as the 11SX.  Have to wait for a "12SX" before it will be the best chain available.
