  3. SUCCESSFUL SPRUIT PATROL FOR RANDBURG POLICE UNIT The Randburg Police Mountain Bike Patrol Unit completed two successful patrols of sections of the Braamfontein Spruit in the past week, in an effort to improve safety for users of the popular urban riverside trail in Johannesburg?s northern suburbs. Following a spate of recent incidents where mountain bikers have been attacked and robbed of their bicycles and other equipment while using ?The Spruit?, as the trail is commonly known, the Randburg Police have mobilised their mountain bike unit, under the command of Inspectors Hein Van Heerden and James Swann. On Wednesday 22 October they did an exploratory afternoon patrol on The Spruit between Peter Place and the N1. Numerous individuals were questioned and searched and no arrests were made. Then on Saturday 25 October a dawn patrol of the land adjacent to Main Road, Sloan Street and the N1, followed by a patrol on The Spruit from 12th Avenue to Jan Smuts Avenue resulted in 13 arrests. ?Most of the arrests were illegal immigrants,? explained Inspector van Heerden. ?One guy we arrested was a suspect in an attempted armed robbery of a mountain biker we had encountered earlier who described his assailants to us. We need this mountain biker to contact us to give an official statement so that we can open a case.? According to Inspector van Heerden, the patrols were a success and only the beginning of a sustained effort by the unit, which is a pilot project and a result of collaboration between local corporates, residents and the SAPS. ?Yes, a good result and a good start,? said Inspector van Heerden. ?It is very important for mountain bikers, or any users of the Braamfontein Spruit, who are assaulted or robbed to make a statement at either the Randburg Police Station or the Sandton Police Station. Even if it is only an attempted assault or robbery. This helps us build up a database from which to make more specific links and successful arrests.? To report any incidents or to offer any useful information that could lead to improved safety on the Braamfontein Spruit and other public areas, contact Inspectors van Heerden or Swann on 011 4499000 or email info@randburgpolice.co.za

  5. a puncture of bicycles.... I got an email from them informing me I hadn't ordered. Mailed back I didn't order cause I didn't like the pics. Then it ping pongs back and forth about I'm committed because I put on a number etc and after a few times, I phone, tell them to go away ( I was nice about it though) and they appear to have ......gone away.
  6. I bought the product and put it on my bike. I have been told that spraypaint won't adhere to the glue that holds the dots. (but i"m not prepared to spray over my frame to test that theory). I put this out there a couple of weeks ago and didn't get much reaction from the hub other than turtlek. Mark and Hog, I hear what you're saying but firstly, there are instances where the police have been efficient (though they may be few and far between) and if there is the slightest chance that you get your bike back for a very low investment (it was R195 give or take) is that not worth it? Secondly, right now, if someone stole your bike and walked into a bike shop, they could sell it and know one would be any the wiser. Now, if we could get all bike shops to buy into this concept and ge them to check a bike dot before they buy the bike we would be cutting off at least one avenue for people to sell stolen bikes. The more people who become aware of this the better. Recoveri is a lot cheaper than micro dot and can be used on all your goods at hme, but the issue here is how do we get the whole biking community to buy into this? jeremyd2008-10-13 03:20:00
  7. I have to agree with sean. If you took the time to write about it on the hub, it would havetake the same too write to andrew and complain/query/comment/request. If you read some of the posting on the hub, you'll see people posting how cyclelab/andrew have gone the extra mile for people with let's say "special" needs. Steynja I realise you didn't think you were bashing cyclelab but then what did you expect people to say to your posting? To those who think that it ok to roast someone publicly without first going to complain, I hope no-one ever has a reason tom complain about you or the service you deliver cause you'll be crying how unfair it was that you never got consulted first (ask our ex president and potential president to be)
  8. they were lebs when you got there and Nancy boys when you left.
  9. stick it in an envelope and send it to Bicycling magazine as a contribution towards the costs of the royalties they're paying to the international guys.
  10. It's OK PPWTF, It's OK PPWTF there there, take a deep breath, come sit down, have a cup of coffee. Here tissue, blow your nose before someone sees.
  11. I love the bitching about not wanting the american and overseas stuff and then they go and buy the international mags. Right on I'm sure you'll get lots of info about the SA racing scene in those mags as well as all the bikes that are going tobe available in South Africa How many of you actually contribute to the magazines or offer to write local content for them? Judging by all the comments we see on the hub, we definitely have the knowledge and passion. How many have vented their anger and disappointment about the content? (this doesn't mean we can't bitch about it on the hub) Of course they know about the hub, they even published an article on it (with the wrong website address). Is there enough local content out there to fill a magazine? For a long time, Ride was rather thin on the ground too. Just my Friday's 3 1/2 cents worth
  12. I agree with PPWTF. In the latest olympic games, records tumbled, Michael Phelps did the unthinkable or unbelievable yet no shouts of he must be doping. Unfortunately our sport has a reputation and everytime the officials say they're cleaning it up, someone gets caught. Get rid of those elements I say but make sure that the testing is 100% (not some french lab with an axe to grind) Simply my OPINION.
  13. I know the guy in the microsoft kit. Heavy isn't the word (for the bike that is)
  14. Another one bites the dust. I hereby wish to inform one and all that I will not be partaking in tomorrow's festivities as a client has seen fit to occupy my precious time with work. Should anyone be in the hyde park area from 10pm tonight, feel free to drop in and have coffee as we'll be up all night and all of tomorrow. Have a great ride.!
  15. sheesh, what I am reading here is such a defeatist attitude, granted realistic but nevertheless, defeatist. I don't know the law but common sense says go and report it. You have his number plate, go into the police station and lay a hit and run charge. My general understanding is that if he refused to give his details, it's the same as not stopping. If they refuse to take a statement, take down their names and ask for the station commander. Then write to Helen Ziller and contact the complaints department of the police force. If we all simply accept this as the norm, it stays the norm. Everything here though s an inconvenience and takes time but that's how a flea eats an elephant, one bite at a time. Should this taxi go on to kill someone, at least there will be a prior charge laid against him. Sometimes we don't see what goes on behind the scenes and occasionally the cops do come through. But we need to start somewhere like ShaunH's signs. It s start, a small one but a start.
  16. Just got this from winning time You are timed from the group that you start with on the morning. The only time that this would not be the case, is if your chip does not read over the start mats. If this happened, the system automatically adds you to the start group that you were originally seeded in. Kind Regards Sandra Jacobs Customer Services Race Administration Systems
  17. Engen are supporting school kids cycling. Wish they could do something about adult cycling awareness, but kudos to them for this. http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/48/27697.html

  19. Went to my LBS and purchased a new tubbie. At the same time, I purchased a can of tubbie puncture repair "stuff" that you can squirt into the tubbie should you get a puncture on route. I left the stuff in my wheelback as I wanted to keep everything together. Here is the clincher. The shop put on the new tubbie and sprayed the stuff into my new tubbie. Has anyone ever had this before? Is this usual? Will it affect the life of my tubbie? Can I go back to the bike shop and ask for a new can of spray? Their short answer was (and as I didn't pick the wheel up myself) was that they have effectively slimed the wheel. Are they trying to slime me over? jeremyd2008-08-24 11:44:22
  20. I've emailed winning time and we'll see, but logically it can't start all the chips that are supposed to be in that group. What about those who didn't pitch do that get a DNF or those sitting on the toilet in the carpark? Something not right.
  21. turtlek my wife started in a later group and the chip read correctly. (although now I am beginning to wonder). I think winning time needs to clarify this.
  22. I hope his lawyer gives him some good advice (oh yeah a I just woke up and my coffee is cold)
  23. nah, just wanted to show that he had a really hard rod
  24. I fail to see th eproblem here. I looked at the thing, decideded I was yellow, opted not to do it, got challenged by my younger brother, did the stupid thing and took up the challenge, did it, scared myself sh-tless and decided not to do it again. On the way back, my brother fell off and dislocated his shoulder. Whose fault is it? His and he knows it. Do we need warning signs on our car doors before we get into a car? Do we need signs outside every junkfood place warning us of the dangers? Why do we need to be told not to do something when it is blatantlyobvious that you run the risk of injuring yourself. We must be a total bunch of idiots!
