  1. But, but, I've been riding them tubeless for such a long time! I guess most of the damage's came from a monorail front and a crosmark/larsen combo at the back. I've gone onto the Mavic site now, and I guess when they state "tubetype" under features it means it's not ust?
  2. Nope, they be Mavic 317's, and I've pretty much always had a Maxxis tyre on them. And I weigh 65. The optimal pressure differs for every setup. But having lower pressure means you've got more grip because a larger surface area of the tyre come into contact with the road surface. [Force=Pressure x Area - the force/your weight remains constant, so decreasing pressure means area increases linearly and so does the grip] Also, lower pressure means a softer ride, especially for a hardtail bike. But as you run a lower pressure the tyre bends the whole time as it comes into contact with the road, which creates friction within the tyre itself and thus making your peddle harder (increased rolling resistance). But I've learned the hard way that when you have your tyre run too low then there is a chance it'll come off the rim. This hurts, so much...
  3. Well, when your rim looks like mine does, you'll definitely need sealant... All those post about running tubeless nice and low-pressured is nonsense to me, just one trip to groenkloof with the tyre under 2.1 will have you hurting the rims :-S And I've tried to get those bends out without hurting the rim - that too is a no-go... It surprises me how strong something so light weight could be. Well, until it comes between you and an edged rock at 40km/h of course
  4. Which size are you looking for?
  5. Ok saying it's illegal is one thing, but will you actually be prosecuted for it? Will a cop driving past actually stop you for it? I think as long as you don't hit a pedestrian who'll sue you for driving where you shouldn't legally be, your good to go.
  6. The Maxxis Minion DHF It gets a pretty good review on MTBR
  7. I highly recommend The Merida TFS500 Big nine http://www.cyclelab.com/products/MERIDA%20BIG%20NINE%20TFS%20500%20(2012).aspx That said, components make all the difference, especially to the "feel" of the bike. It's noticeable the difference good components make even when just holding the handlebar, go see for yourself. Good brakes, good shifters and smooth soft suspension are more important than just having bigger wheels.

  9. Tyres! Aaaahhh, make me feel so peaceful to discuss them... I've got a closet full of them now, and I've been through tube/tubeless setups. I did eventually find that Maxxis Minion DHF for the front wheel. Regrettably it wasn't tubeless but cost about R350, so I took it. It's got the "super sticky" rubber compound, which is noticably softer when you press it with your nail. And man, does this tyre rock. Not only over the rocks and downs but over flat and loose corners as well. Likely it wont last a 100 years, but who cares, it's an expense, and it keeps the bike between me and the hard stuff. I really recommend it to anyone who's got a... unhealthy ratio between daring and skill ;-)
  10. Hmmm, was your girlfriend perhaps in the same room...? (hint hint)
  11. Hi ladies/gents I have a friend who injured her hip in a car accident a few year ago. The docters have given the O.K. and she's trying to get into mountain biking with her hubby. Problem is, the bumps are giving her some pain in said hips. She owns a hardtail. So, except for getting a soft-tail bike, what are her options? I've seen pictures of those old bike seats with springs underneath but have NEVER actually seen one, let alone in a shop... Does anyone here have knowledge or experience in this matter? Thanks
  12. Ah ok, (blush). I'd very much like to try the front tyre, very, very much. As soon as months end arrives and i find it in a store Ps, the link in your sig doesn't work.
  13. Which minion are you refering to? I see there is quite a difference between the DHF and the DHR. And where on earth do we buy these things?

    Sank yu!
  15. But buying two new rims is going to be an expensive exercise. I think I know what you mean about a wider rim but other than weight, why not just buy a 2.3 - 2.4 Tyre. I still think a 2.4 maxxis ardent will work stunningly?
  16. Bump?
  17. Kings kloof for a first race? Hectic... Try doing a couple of easier races first, like baba's lodge ;-)
  18. Ah, a tyre discussion! I like XD I've had a Maxis monorail front and crossmark back combo for a long time now, worked like magic, especially on flat race like babas lodge. But with my recent plunder at Kings Kloof recently I've decided the monorail's days are over, I need more bulk upfront but obviously not full downhill... I've been looking at the Maxxis Minion DHF which get very good scores at MTBR, but the WTB Mutano 2.4 tyre look so amazing too. Anyone care to comment on those? And where to buy in Gauteng too, please? PS: what is up with the GEAX tyre prices, seriosly?
  19. Ouch, both my wrists got hammered super hard, especially the one which is sitting in braces at the moment, even though its not broken... But I've been thinking of getting a new front tyre, the monorail works great on flat-ish surfaces but suck on rocky routes like kings. Any suggestions? Maybe the maxis ardent or Minion? or something? Not interrested in the conti's...
  20. Hehe, well not considering everything else, I guess it feels quite good if you say it like that :-D as soon as everything has returned to normal painlessness I'll be going back for revenge. Maybe I'll get two fake tattoos just incase looking badass helps.
  21. Friday was my first at Kings Kloof. We did the black but got gatvol near the farthest point of the route and jippo'd a bit. Finished with about 20km. But on the way back on a rocky downhill I lost it and busted... well allot of things, on myself and the bike. So between trying to ride back with one hand, muscle spasms and walking, I don't want to mention the end time... Needless to say, I was not prepared, this route broke me :-)
  22. If you're above 70kg there's nothing wrong. This may sound mean but, "get a girlfriend" was the first thing that came to my mind :-P
  23. If your stuck trying to go up something, do a 180 on the route and go down... on it P-)
  24. Rock and Roll!!! Me and 2 buddies will be there tomorrow.
  25. Thanks :-) I appreciate the reply. I'd love to get tested myself, mostly out of sheer curiosity.
