  1. tough race no matter what direction you go.
  2. Is this event going ahead? Will there be refreshments / food etc on sale. Camping area to catch a few zzzz between laps? Battery recharge station? Braai zone? Registration times? where can we get more details?
  3. Still an enjoyable route, the bumps just before Hartebeespoort were challenging, and The Jenkins climb... well..., glad I got some practice for this nasty bump riding up Spionkop at the Berg n Bush. Definitely worth doing again, the wind reminded one of riding the N14 into "the teeth" in previous 947 races. Nice to ride through town too, and past the union buildings. The finish was rather diabolical, no directions, and trying to find your way back to the start between buses and cars going up and over the hill (yes more climbing) was a little irritating

  5. Tourniquet often leads to amputation. Dont do it. Immobilization and a Pressure bandage along the entire limb to reduce the rapid spread of venom through the lymphatic system, is what should be done. You are not aiming to cut off blood circulation with a pressure bandage. You can see a full description in Johan Marais book "A complete guide to the Snakes of Southern Africa" 2nd edition 2004 - Struik. Johan is also a regular on the FB group.
  6. looks really interesting.
  7. Nigel only opens on a Thursday...
  8. pfffft...
  9. Completely normal. Ladies weigh so much less and if they are fit, their power to weight ratio will be very high = speed up hills.
  10. Weight on a downhill is the BEST THING! tuck nice and small, and with some good deep section aero wheels you FLY! Going uphill, not so much...
  11. EXACTLY! Enjoy every moment.
  12. It all comes down to what value you want to get for your money. As a JHB resident who has done 8 CTCT events now (plus 1 for the cancelled race), I certainly know that what we experienced on sunday weather wise was unusual. It was great, and I have only had similar weather in 3 out of 8 events. Making the trip to CT is an expensive exercise, but pinning all your hopes and expectations just on the race is silly. The CT weather (and other stuffs like protests and fires) is too fickle to just focus on the CTCT race when there is soooo much else to do there over the long weekend trip. Last year we kitesurfed in Langebaan. This year we surfed at Muizenburg. The race has become a nice extra, incidental to all the other fun stuff available. Sure, I do train hard and that makes the race fun and enjoyable, not a slog, and a 6:23 start means i get to drink beer earlier than most. When it was cancelled last year, and also shortened previous year to that, yes that was disappointing. But not a train smash either...
  13. snip snip You NEVER slack off until you have that coke/waterbottle/medal in your hand. Those timing mats are sneeky - there is always one around the next corner. been there done that...
  14. Pro Ladies doing the short distance had 2 full numbers on their backs
  15. They might have started in a group ahead of you, riding with friends, and not caring that moving forward in start batches would get them disqualified.
  16. Some efforts are made in the CTCT magazine everyone is given at registration with riding tips and do's and dont's, but I dont think everybody reads the useful info. 947 has introduced the "lap around Kyalami" which slowed the super fast decent down Kyalami hill. Definitely a safety upgrade to that portion of the race. Smaller bunches is always difficult, especially with 26000-30000 participants. 2 minute bunch gaps doesn't really work, and the later bunches are huge when it would be better making them smaller. The organizers want to be off the road as soon as possible, so limiting entries would be the obvious option it seems.
  17. Basic human competitive nature. Put any two humans together on bikes and its a race. Taking the timing out of it wont stop things like Strava influencing peoples behavior. Using qualifying events and specific skills training might help. Accidents happen. At the end of the day, no body wants to crash and it is extremely unfortunate that this does happen. People will still crash if it is turned into a mass fun ride. Riding for long periods, mistakes happen, through fatigue or distraction, or lack of concentration. External factors such as road conditions, roadworks, weather, etc etc also contribute to accidents.
  18. You need to remember that each "Batch" is its own race. Generally batches are seeded with riders of similar ability, and it all comes down to the specific rider tactics/teams?/willingness-to-work-together/personal-agendas etc. Just because C catches B, or B catches up to A, certainly doesnt mean the batches are seeded incorrectly, or the lower riders are better than those in higher batches. The problem really lies with the organization in the fact that each batch only has 2 minutes separating it from the next, and this affects the "racing" going on in each batch as once they amalgamate, it really becomes a total mess. If batch B catches batch A, then in an ideal world B should be allowed to pass A unhindered, so that the "racing" in each batch can continue. This never happens (except when commissaires usually instruct groups to allow faster elite groups such as the Elite Ladies for instance, to pass them in road races) Proper racing with all its intrigue, cat and mouse games, attacks, and counters is great fun, but sadly doesnt happen outside the Elite and racing vets groups...
  19. Doesnt depend on the group, rather on the weather...
  20. and the race prices just keep rising
  21. lol, strava is NOT an exact science...
  22. so frustrating. JHB Glassy road & pothole capitol
  23. Proper rain on sunday morning.
