Many insurance companies don't cover races. My previous policy was through Hollard and they would not cover my bicycle in a race or my motorcycle on a race track. I have since switched to Alexander Forbes because of this. Also, my bicycle premium has halved. Hollard also insisted my bicycle be locked to an immovable object if not in a locked up garage, that makes sense to me, it is a high risk item.

Remember that when a bike shop replaces a bike they charge the insurance company retail. For instance Westdene will charge them the marked price and not the discount price they would give you.

I think the issue here is not one of housebraking but "forced entry" If I leave my laptop in my car and it is stolen without forced entry then there is a higher excess - sounds fair to me

If you leave your front door open they need to be locked to an immovable object. If your door or window is forced open then they will pay. Same applies to bikes in your garage, if the garage is left unlocked they need to be secured.
