  1. I must admit that my initial reaction was that Case M was of Maori/Pacific origins. To be clear, I did not see that as a good/bad thing, I couldn't care about the ethnicity, but it is interesting that my mental picture of this person was a Maori/Islander vibe. I appreciate the fact that your post has helped me challenge that initial reaction. Bias is a strange thing.
  2. By and large the NZ response to covid has been brilliant. This however, is a major flaw. Our plan relies on people following the rules and regulations. Given that a small % of any population will always deviate from the rules, and with no enforceable repercussions, the system is at risk of collapse.
  3. Thanks for the nice comment. As for the last piece, WTAF?
  4. Right, so it's time to start pushing myself out of my stupid comfort zone. Registered for a 53 km Ultra Trail run in February 2022. It's in the Redwoods forest of Rotorua. Found a good running coach and am working on a programme to increase distance/speed in a (hopefully) smart way to minimise injury. Most of the running will be done on roads in preparation with maybe one trail run a week. Last week (week 2) of my programme was my biggest week ever. 48 km of distance in one week including a 4 km running track (grass) session done barefoot to strengthen the feet. I must admit, running barefoot on soft squishy grass was awesome. I also carried out yesterdays barefoot session as an active recovery after a 21.1km road run in the morning. Today my legs feel good. Normally after a 21km, I feel tight and uncomfortable for 2-3 days. I am pretty nervous about the 53km run, but I reckon if i take my time and build up properly over the next 11 months, it should be doable.
  5. Yep. Housing, child poverty, high suicide rates and another lockdown spring to mind. Overall, I prefer my life here to a huge degree, but it isnt without its warts.
  6. In RSA I cycled because it was a good way to stay fit that was relatively safe. There were purpose built bike parks and I was faster than the average crim trying to nab my bike (calculated risk) In NZ, I have access to so much more SAFE activities. Running, walking, hiking, skiing, paddleboarding, surfing, trail running...the list goes on. So i suppose, for me at least, my cycling has taken a back seat to a whole new set of adventures. I still ride occasionally and my son is getting better and we are now hitting some trails together, so its likely to increase again.
  7. if you don’t like what you read on this thread, rather stay off. You seem very sour.
  8. gotta love the first world right?
  9. yep. They are not even in the top 10 of industries contributing to the GDP.
  10. why is it not Vegan? The recipe is for a cheese free sauce and there are plenty of egg free pastas out there?
  11. I have signed up for a 53km ultra trail in the Redwoods Forest of Rotorua in NZ. It’s only in a years time. So plenty time to get ready.
  12. with all due respect, this is an assumption.
  13. Crispy salt and pepper tofu pho.
  14. i had the v6 diesel. And yes, even better than my brand new rav 4.
  15. I bought a Land Rover Discovery 4 many years ago and heard ALL of the jokes. Hand on heart, it was the best vehicle I have ever owned. I miss that car. Will be watching this thread closely as a bystander!
  16. LOL. Although to be more fair, any group of people with the word "militant" in front of them are pretty rude and loud. But yes, crossfitters, vegans etc
  17. Wow - did not realise how pricey they were in SA. In NZ they are around 70% of that price.
  18. THIS! @OP - This is less about the device and more about the software. You should invest in a proper document management tool that allows you to track an audit trail of adjustments. Most of these tools will work on almost any device. I often travel to get clients to sign off big software builds, and nothing says old school like pen and paper. Given that I sell future focussed software, I use Adobe with a basic ipad (like the cheapest one) and an apple pencil. Done
  19. Tips for easing muscle stiffness? Did a massive (in my world) hike on the weekend and the legs still feel really sore. Any old school tips to make it go away so I can run normally again?
  20. LOL - I actually do own a dehydrator that i use for hiking meals. Vegan hiking meals are really expensive and this way we can make our own. Dried mango and pineapple is totally awesome.
  21. Another example. I go off to apply for my NZ drivers Licence, fully prepared for the armageddon and mad max style license centres in RSA. Go to the AA, fill in form, get eyes checked. Card in mail 4 days later. That took 4 days to process my application, print a card and post it 600km away. First world living!
  22. That must be plugged in right? Or is that your wifi signal?
  23. Thanks for this. You are absolutely correct about humans being smarter than animals and as the "dominant" species on the planet, we naturally must take even more responsibility towards protecting the rest. Let's be honest, we've done a pretty poor job of it so far. If we want things to change, we have to be willing to change.
  24. See my reply above to Chris around free range. NZ is a huge dairy country (one of the largest i think) and the cows here have a good life (at least compared to other countries) but even here what happens is frankly barbaric. Cows are impregnated every two years to continue producing milk, male calf's are slaughtered almost instantly for pet products and the cycle keeps going on and on. Studies are being conducted around the cortisol levels in cows and they are starting to show the highest levels of cortisol in any mammal. Cortisol is a stress hormone mammals produce when stressed out. The troubling thing with cortisol is that it is passed from the cow to the milk and thus into humans. So essentially, we stress the cows out to a point of exhaustion and then drink the stress juice thus stressing ourselves out! Humans are weird right? Granted, these studies are new and have limited sample size, so policy cannot be changed based on this alone, but at least they are starting to measure it and explore it. Your strategy to do your own research and avoid the propaganda is good. There are zealots and misinformation on both sides. conducting balanced research with a critical mindset is sadly a skill that is deeply lacking in the general population so kudos to you for using this method. The fact that you are willing to talk to others and adapt your opinion as the facts present themselves is a great thing, irrespective of where you end up.
