  1. And, curiously enough, on twitter.... Gagliardo ‏@fermionichadronJan 19 Can I get a @ProfTimNoakes opinion on this? “@whsource "ketogenic diet causes glucose intolerance" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24398402 ” Tim Noakes‏@ProfTimNoakes @fermionichadron @whsource Mice are not (wo)men. Most of these findings are the opposite of what happens to humans eating LCHF. Study humans
  2. Dale, my understanding of carb intake when racing is that you want the carb to be as quickly available as possible. The theory being that at high intensities one does require carb input, and there is no particularly obvious reason to make these carbs hard to get at (i.e. low g.i.) as they are the limiting factor to performance. The marketing of low gi products is generally based on that they don't spike blood sugar while under conditions of exercise. It turns out that blood sugar doesn't spike anyway under conditions of exercise so the theory sounds good until you examine it a bit. If this post is trying to teach you how to suck eggs, I apologise and please ignore
  3. What he said. Trying to push it leads to misery and despair. But stick to it, it's worth it. Took me probably 4 months to start coming right, but I'm not particularly carb intolerant. Noakes says that that the more intolerant you are, the quicker you come right.
  4. Still my favourite bird. Used to have a family of them in a tree right next to our verandah when I was growing up. Now get one in our garden now and then. There is something about them that just says Africa.
  5. Do you look sickly thin?
  6. Re previous post. Salt tabs are even more of a rip-off than etolls. Does anyone have access to a supplier who supplies in bulk (and cheap?)
  7. Howzit Dean Like Dale says welcome to the mad-house. Remember tho, that if you follow a ketogenic diet you thyriod will implode setting off a chain reaction up and down your spine causing your brain and, unfortunately, eventually, testicles, to explode. Or so it says on the internet. Possibly However, should you be prepared to take the risk, interesting things occur - my experiences: 1. Reduced panting (in fact, no panting) - allegedly due to no longer producing lactic acid as part of CHO combustion 2. Reduced requirement for CHO supplementation whilst cycling - none for most non-high intensive training/riding, much reduced for high-intensive training / racing. 3. The other stuff - stable daily blood sugar, better sleep, better concentration, weight loss etc. In my case reduced blood pressure too. Oh - and no more reflux after years of suffering it. Envious of your access to grass fed grub. Cheers Dave Edit: From my experience, things to watch out for: 1. Lack of magnesium: cramps at night, cramps while cycling - a magnesium supplement taken most days (when I remember) seems to sort this out fine. 2. Lack of salt: lethargy, headaches, lack of performance on bike. I fix this by taking salt tabs - 2 x .2g tabs per day and before races seems to work fine for me. I salt my food too. Also lack of salt can cause constipation when converting to LCHF.
  8. For me it's the butter that makes the difference - either leave it out (which is pretty much what I do now) or introduce it gradually. Maybe I just don't use the right butter.
  9. If you're interested in these pics, give this a read. I read it in Vietnam. Were interesting days/lives indeed. Page after Page: Memoirs of a War-Torn Photographer
  10. You left out he's and his.
  11. There's always an exception to the rule!!
  12. Hell, if it misses with one set of teeth, it's got a bunch more to get you with...!! I wonder who put his hand in there to get it off the fence?
  13. Hey Nick Where did you get the Hansom? I'm quite keen to do another fixie. I took the black one I made with your frame to the lbs to get the headset sorted out (I left a shim out or something due to the geyser in my workshop bursting and everything getting mixed up / lost in the process of sorting that out) and the mech raved on it. Said if I ever felt like selling it, to give him first option! Also fixed in to work the other day - wasn't the easiest of commutes, but remarkably fast. I can't remember what ratio I'm running, but it's on the limit for for my commute.
  14. Camelbak with Tubeless repair kit (with snots) Plugs for bigger holes Two bombs Adapter Quicklink Multitool (or so I thought until i needed it) Stage races: + slime tube & chunky levers TRK has some odds and ends in it - chain pins (never use them because I use quick links), valve adapter so's I can pomp at the garage (not that I ever have), joe's valve core
  15. I posted just before Christmas, discussing whether HIIT is possible on LCHF as I was battling to complete a 6 x 4 min Zone 5 session (as per Mike Posthumous in Full Suss). Turns out it's nothing to do with LCHF or not, just I'm not fit or strong enough (yet!) to complete a 6 x 4 min Zone 5 HIIT session... The new plan is instead of trying to do 6 intervals and failing miserably on 3 of them, is to do good intervals and then then to stop the first time I fail on any one interval. I seem to remember Burry saying in some article that it's not worth trying to make numbers if you are not in a position to make them - leave it and try again when you are stronger / more rested. So I will attempt to do good intervals, and hopefully the rewards of being able to do 6 x 4 min will come with time.
  16. And another step in the N=1 adventuring starts! Let us know how things go...
  17. Old farts. Never seen one myself...
  18. That commuting by fixie is fun, but damn, it's hard!!
  19. We like to get caught up in the detail and sometimes miss the big picture. I think Mark Sisson (or someone) summed it up as 'don't eat the white stuff'. If you don't eat the white stuff (rice, potatoes, flour, pasta, sugar etc however excluding cauliflower!) you are probably 80% of the way there. The rest is detail. But don't eat the white stuff. After that, you need to decide if you want be on the ketogenic side of LCHF, or not. If not, go for paleo, if so, go a bit more strict. Everyone has their own set of circumstances and thus their own balance. We should probably have a second level rule to follow the 'Don't eat white stuff' rule. Suggestions? Don't eat: seed oils ? When I see things like 'don't cook using olive oil as it is unstable at smoking point' I kind of think that one shouldn't get too hung up on that. I take the point, but I also wonder how many of us who are not professional chefs cook anything at smoking point? That's fekkin hot. I don't. PS: Re Topwine. He is a contrarian and will find something the opposite to say on any subject. Have a look at his contributions to other threads on this forum to get an idea. Being contrary for the sake of contrariness is not particularly helpful or useful. This is an observation and I will not get into any further discussion regarding it or Topwine. If he believes that LCHF is so harmful, then let him start a thread with what he believes is the way to go and we can judge that on it's own merits.
  20. I used to drive past there often when I was at university and have always felt that the place looked like it was worth exploring. Just never got there as it is so out of the way.
  21. I'll take 2l if you are willing to split. Just need to get a container.
  22. I get gout now and then. About the same frequency prior to and post LCHF. The only common denominator I can pick up is high protein intake while dehydrated. Typically it used to be protein drinks when i was dehydrated (dehydrated means that I've felt dry for a couple of days and been telling myself I should drink more but not doing it). This time (just before Christmas ) I think it was dehydration again. We went down to the coast and the tap water was discoloured and I wasn't too keen to drink it. Otherwise, is hard to tell what actually causes it. When I gave in and drank red wine and ate red meat, it did not seem to get any worse. And maybe even got a bit better. Edit: Schweinhund: Read your link. Could well have been due to extra sugar intake due to the Christmas season... this would be consistent from when I tried an experiment with low gi carb juice by drinking it concentrated before a ride in to see if it would last through the ride, which the marketing blurb indicated that it should do. Got gout that evening. Interesting. Another good reason to avoid sugar.

    Sailing

Sounds like carnage. Haven't followed it before. Is this normal?
  24. Was driving up the N2 to King Shaka Airport looking down into the sugarcane fields - got me hankering for Day 3. Can't wait.
