  1. Quarq and Powertap prices on current units are in a similar ballpark here and overseas. The local units might be a bit more expensive, but I think the extra cost is worth the CPA protection and warranty support that you gain by buying local. The major exception is that overseas shops often have big discounts on previous generation units, which local stores tend not to do I don't know about Cape Cycle Systems (SRAM/Quarq), but Bicycle Power will charge a premium to service current units that were bought overseas.
  2. I've got one of these as a simple phone to carry while cycling. The battery lasts so long that I forget to charge it occasionally. Compare that to my E51 which dies if it goes longer than 36hrs without charging.
  3. If you're a Discovery Card holder and have Platinum Vitality status, you can get up to 20% rebate at Cape Union Mart. Get them to price match the Sportsman's price and you'll end up paying R2700 or so (less if you can find a retail store with an even lower price for them to match).
  4. Are you a Discovery member with a Discovery Card?

  6. Completely, utterly wrong . From the HSRC in 2010: http://www.hsrc.ac.za/HSRC_Review_Article-213.phtml If you must grind some political axe, at least do it using accurate figures.
  7. This is pretty much it. They have an automatic dialler that goes through a whole list of randomly generated numbers to find out which ones are valid. They can then sell that database. Until they introduce the CPA's national do-not-call database, there's not much you can do. Carmichael, you'll probably find that in a few weeks time you'll start getting a lot of actual marketing calls.
  8. My problem is that a number of people who I actually do want to speak to have numbers that route through switchboards or international exchanges that make them show up as a private number.
  9. It's higher than some, lower than others. What cereal are you not adding sugar too? Maybe it's got the sugar already? Pronutro wholewheat has 20g of sugar/100g and gives 1551 kJ of energy Normal Pronutro has 14g/100g and gives 1608 kJ Normal Wheatbix has 1.8g/100g and gives 1323 kJ Cornflakes have 5g/100g and give 1513 kJ Special K has 33g/100g and gives 1674 kJ Cocopops have 36g/100g and give 1525 kJ
  10. I am looking at ways to combine my bike and Gautrain. I am also seriously considering moving from Joburg to Centurion/Irene to be closer to work, not just for costs, but to save a lot of the 90min I spend in my car every day. An increase in the fuel levy is what most of the opponents to e-tolling have been suggesting all along as an alternative method of funding the roads.
  11. Also this:
  12. Combine a love of cars with a whole lot of efficient logic. The only really surprising thing is that it's not a Merc or BMW.
  13. They're German.

  15. Due to the dishing, the spokes on the brake side and on the drive side have to be tightened to a higher tension than the other spokes, so they do experience higher stresses. I doubt it's enough to truly justify a 2:1 pattern, though.
  16. The international refinery price is driven by the oil price, but there is not a direct link. If oil goes up, it usually makes the petrol price rise too, but there might be some lag. Edit: Here's an explanation of how our petrol price is calculated: http://www.sasol.com/sasol_internet/downloads/FuelPrice_calculation_SA_07_1170868230705.pdf and an animation: http://www.sasol.com/sasol_internet/frontend/common/flash/petrol_price.html
  17. Our petrol price is based on international refinery petrol prices, not the oil price.
  18. I managed to lose all of my desktop icons a while back. I had this strange feeling that something wasn't right, but it took me a while before I realised what was actually missing.
  19. That's quite a drastic step to take, based on one person's story, from which we've heard only one side.
  20. Race with the Powertap. The data you gain for post-race analysis far outweighs the benefit of saving a few grams with the Euruses.
  21. I got a bit fed up when they started interviewing psychics and doing over-the-air readings. Fortunately, the afternoon drive show isn't so nutty. Found a cool streaming classic rock station for when I'm at work.
  22. Have they changed their policy? When I asked back in 2010, they said they don't rent out bike racks. Brad, if you don't come right, give me a shout I might be able to help.
  23. Sweet, I didn't know that one.
  24. Looks like a scissor-type linkage for the suspension. Sort of like a car jack, but without the screw for lifting it.
