  1. Linden Cycles and Westdene Cycles have reasonable prices. Buycycle.co.za had some going really cheap on clearance, but sizes are limited.
  2. "You're gonna need a bigger platform"?
  3. What about Wilro. Or is that the next weekend?
  4. If they manage to sell them at those prices, then the price was right. If you're selling to a broad and ignorant market, then you can overcharge. I personally don't think it's ethical, though.
  5. It gets a bit iffy around high buildings and thick tree cover, but for tracking training kilometres it's certainly accurate enough. If you're using it for drag testing, then you need the speed sensor as it's more accurate (when properly calibrated) and more consistent.
  6. Speaking for the Edge 800 (and I believe the 500 will be similar), the speed sensor definitely overrides the GPS speed and distance (I have verified this by putting in very big and very small wheel sizes). The Garmin data file contains fields for GPS position and for speed and accumulated distance. Only the latter two are affect by the speed sensor - the GPS data isn't. Some programs, like SportTracks, allow you to compare the distance from the speed sensor to a distance calculated from the GPS points. The works best if you use 1s recording on the Edge.

  8. I was wondering why a whole lot had suddenly started looking like platypuses.
  9. I even smell that stuff and I want to throw up. One too many John Deere experiences. I used to use Whasp Amino Carb, but either my current batch is dodgy or something has changed because it now no longer seems to have any effect (had to hit a couple of walls before I realised that).
  10. It's now available for 'only' EUR 3800 You won't be able to use Campag 135mm BCD chainrings, nor will you be able to use their 110mm BCD chainrings (one of the bolts is different to everyone else's compact rings). You do, however, get after-market 11sp rings that will fit the Quarq and give acceptable accuracy. If you're on 10sp, the SRAM Quarq will work perfectly with a Campag drivetrain (and doesn't look too out of place) - this is what I'm doing. A lot of people also say they're running a 10sp SRAM Quarq on an 11sp group with no issues.
  11. If you don't want to decide just yet, you can also set the slope yourself at a later stage with an iPhone/Pod/Pad and the Qalvin app and the ANT+ dongle.
  12. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_urSQl6wUA5g/R4AZeNOHn-I/AAAAAAAAA4s/2MDhDauY660/s400/CinQo_Spider.jpg This is really the only part that is actually made by Quarq (or SRM etc.). The crank and chainrings come from other manufacturers. The individual spiders are then machined to match these - hence Cannondale, Specialized, SRAM etc. spiders.
  13. All current crank-based PMs consist of a custom spider (the part that holds the chainrings) that contains all the electronics that is then bolted on to the crank arms from a normal crank. This is why you cannot get a PM for all crank types - it needs a removable spider or the crank manufacturer needs to make a special arm just for the PM (e.g. Campag Super Record SRM or SRAM Red Quarq). You can get a Cannondale Quarq spider, but you have to get it direct from Quarq: it doesn't come through the SRAM supply chain. http://www.quarq.com/cinqo_cannondale
  14. Activeworx bring them in and support them: http://www.activeworx.co.za/DisplayCustomLink.aspx?name=SRM%20Road The new wireless versions are ANT+ compatible and will work with the Edge 800.
  15. I've got the routes on Strava: S1 - http://app.strava.com/activities/207115 S2 - http://app.strava.com/activities/2349370 S3 - http://app.strava.com/activities/2349367 S4 - http://app.strava.com/activities/2349363 Just ignore the first and last 6km on some of the rides. You can export them to .gpx.
  16. You've got lots of time until the road season starts properly, around August-September. I would say wait until a good second hand deal shows up in your size. If you don't like the bike, you can sell it on without making a big loss, likewise if you decide to upgrade at a later point. Provided you get the bike checked out before you buy it, the lack of warranty also really isn't likely to be an issue.
  17. That's not a bad looking climb, where is it? Is that time or distance on the x-axis?
  18. FAA regulations in the States: http://www1.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgAdvisoryCircular.nsf/0/d1ee786f363e795286256eee0061e9a6/$FILE/AC120-27D.pdf 190lb in summer, 195lb in winter (both include 16lb carry-on baggage). 30lb checked-in baggage. I don't know what the local regulations are, but Baie-sukkel should.
  19. Before I saw the light, I attended some aero engineering lectures and I recall the design figure being 70kg/passenger and 20kg for luggage (including hand luggage). Obesity is becoming a problem, especially in the States and they've now raised the average standard passenger weight to 86kg. This is, indeed, a factor. There is, however, no exact maximum figure, since it depends on the specific working and lifting conditions e.g. where the lifting points are, what shape the item is, where it needs to be moved from and to etc.. When we were designing heavy machinery, we used a rule-of-thumb of about 25-40kg per person. Anything above that required allowance for lifting shackles or an additional person.
  20. The inconsistency seemed to be between what Mango was charging to carry a bike and what Kulula was charging. I guess you need to charge more if you can't rely on taxpayer sponsored bail-outs whenever you get into trouble.
  21. The power meter allows you to accurately track your training intensity. After that, you can do a whole lot of interesting data manipulation to estimate the training load, recovery, fitness etc. Dr. Andrew Coggan created the Performance Management Chart as a simple visual way to do this. It doesn't specifically tell you if you're overtrained, but it will tell you that you're approaching a point where there's an increased risk of it happening and you should consider resting.
  22. The total luggage allowance is one bag of 20kg. If your bike weighs 20kg and everything else is hand luggage, your bike will be free. If your suitcase weighs 10kg and your bike weighs 20kg, you will pay for 20kg of extra luggage. You can pre-book excess baggage at reduced rates online. I have no problems with Kulula's baggage policies. I have big problems with their inability to land any flight on time (15min late was the closest they've come for me).
  23. Yes. The shiny ones are chrome plated, the dull ones are nickel plated.
  24. Road latex inner tubes with removable valve cores.
  25. Who decided to paint it in the JMPD colours?
