  2. Ok, so a person must heed the risks, take an informed decision, experiment and measure the results to allow you to cease the approach if not for you. I think that is what many hubbers that are in the LCHF camp - including Noakes - are saying. There were plenty studies on both sides if you take a totally unbaised look. However, very few with humans due to ethic codes etc. I personally, prefer evidence however anectodal it might be, of living humans that can share their experience and results. We are happy to take Bear Grylls word on survival, but unhappy to take Noakes and our fellow cyclists word on their own experience and results.
  3. You seem happy to ignore the risks of a high carb diet. As you said ignore at your own peril. Age old studies that promotes high carb diets have been found wanting (of banting). It will be a to and fro for more time that I care to consider. The general layman like me that is a weekend warrior, not skinny but very happy to participate in the sport that make me feel great, prefer to experiment with whatever "program" that deliver results. And the LCHF lifestyle has resulted in me being the healthiest and strongest I have ever been. I have none of the allergies left that used to be a constant issue. You do not need a double blind study to confrim that. All, and I empasise ALL of my friends that went on to the lifetsyle has the same results. I firmly believe that only a very small percenatge of the population can process sugar and grains with no effect, the rest will suffer because of it. The proof is in the pudding... em fat.

  5. Yeah, dangerous area. A buddy and I were relieved of our MTB’s in May 2010 on the singletrack going down to the corner of the concrete works. The bastards were hiding in the ditch just past the dirt road crossing. Sadly that was the last time I went riding there. @Evan - Had 4.5yrs of unmolested fun there and we thankfully where not seriously hurt when robbed. I would be careful none the less if I were you. Your size might make them extra aggressive to ensure their own survival. I am trying to convince myself that most of these bastards steal our bikes to survive.

  8. I was there as a participant, the warrior event was awesome and loads of fun. Only a small part of the sterk manne is to blame as per most cases like this. Littering at an event is an unfortunate problem that any organiser of any event is faced with in SA. It is easier at some events, but 7000 participants will leave their mark. I try to pick up the litter in full view of the litterbug, at some level of his concience he will feel k@k eventhough he will try to hide it. If we do not litter, we will be the example to our kids and the result will hopefully be that it stays a small part of participants that litter ect ect.

  10. Spot on. I completed the 2013 Transbaviaans in 13:19 with just water and protien, overall carb intake for the day came to 1% only. Avg HR at 69%. Did the Nissan Van Gaalens 75km race at avg HR of 79% and battled, it felt harder than the Transbaviaans. I need to work out a feulling strategy for races.
  11. Van Gaalens is one of my favorite riding spots - concrete road, jou blixem and tant miems from the bottom side will do for technical and rocky climbing. A couple of sessions on Breedts nek will do for distance.
  12. 80km as per website entry page I think my MTB skills and ability will be about average. I completed the Transbaviaans in 13:19 with a 26'er , so I will survive - I think. Would just like to get an idea of whats coming.
  13. I entered for this year's Monster, will be my first one. I realised after reading the posts on the 2013 Monster that I will have to put in a serious amount of training. Is the route open for training during the year? I have trained on Breedts Nek before, but would like to train on the actual Monster climb as well.

  15. If you think your bike looks good, it does. If you like the way your bike rides, it’s an awesome bike. You don’t need to spend a million dollars to have a great bike, but if you do spend a million dollars and know what you want you’ll probably also have a great bike. Yes, you can tour on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can race on your bike – whatever it is. Yes, you can commute on your bike – whatever it is. 26” wheels or 29” or 650b or 700c or 24” or 20” or whatever – yes, that wheel size is rad and you’ll probably get where you’re going. Disc brakes, cantis, v-brakes, and road calipers all do a great job of stopping a bike when they’re working and adjusted. No paint job makes everyone happy. Yes, you can put a rack on that. Get some p-clamps if there are no mounts. Steel is a great material for making bike frames - so is aluminum, carbon fiber, and titanium. You can have your saddle at whatever angle makes you happy. Your handlebars can be lower than your saddle, even with your saddle, or higher than your saddle. Whichever way you like it is right. Being shuttled up a downhill run does not make you a weak person, nor does choosing not to fly off of a 10 foot drop. Bike frames made overseas can be super cool. Bike frames made in the USA can be super cool. The more you ride your bike, the less your ass will hurt. The following short answers are good answers, but not the only ones for the question asked – 29”, Brooks, lugged, disc brake, steel, Campagnolo, helmet, custom, Rohloff, NJS, carbon, 31.8, clipless, porteur. No bike does everything perfectly. In fact, no bike does anything until someone gets on it to ride. Sometimes, recumbent bikes are ok. Your bikeshop is not trying to screw you. They’re trying to stay open. Buying things off of the internet is great, except when it sucks. Some people know more about bikes than you do. Other people know less. Maybe the person you waved at while you were out riding didn’t see you wave at them. It sucks to be harassed by assholes in cars while you’re on a bike. It also sucks to drive behind assholes on bikes. Did you build that yourself? Awesome. Did you buy that? Cool. Wheelies are the best trick ever invented. That’s just a fact. Which is better, riding long miles, or hanging out under a bridge doing tricks? Yes. Yes, you can break your collar bone riding a bike like that. Stopping at stop signs is probably a good idea. Driving with your bikes on top of your car to get to a dirt trail isn’t ideal, but for most people it’s necessary. If your bike has couplers, or if you have a spendy bike case, or if you pay a shop to pack your bike, or if you have a folding bike, shipping a bike is still a pain in the ass for everyone involved. That dent in your frame is probably ok, but maybe it’s not. You should get it looked at. Touch up paint always looks like ****. Often it looks worse than the scratch. A pristine bike free of dirt, scratches, and wear marks makes me sort of sad. A bike that’s been chained to the same tree for three years caked with rust and missing parts makes me sad too. Bikes purchased at Wal-mart, Target, Costco, or K-mart are generally not the best bang for your buck. Toe overlap is not the end of the world, unless you crash and die – then it is. Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault. Yes, you can buy a bike without riding it first. It would be nice to ride it first, but it’s not a deal breaker not to. Ownership of a truing stand does not a wheel builder make. 32 spokes, 48 spokes, 24 spokes, three spokes? Sure. Single speed bikes are rad. Bikes with derailleurs and cassettes are sexy. Belt drive internal gear bikes work great too. Columbus, TruTemper, Reynolds, Ishiwata, or no brand? I’d ride it. Tubeless tires are pretty cool. So are tubes. The moral of RAGBRAI is that families and drunken boobs can have fun on the same route, just maybe at different times of day. Riding by yourself kicks ass. You might also try riding with a group. Really fast people are frustrating, but they make you faster. When you get faster, you might frustrate someone else. Stopping can be as much fun as riding. Lots of people worked their asses off to build whatever you’re riding on. You should thank them.

  17. After a lot of e-mails and phone calls, the negotiations closed with the following agreed upon. Dragons Sports (Giant) will replace the frame and carry the shipping costs. The LBS will do the rebuild free of charge. I will carry the cost of the BB and fork adaptor to fit the tapered headtube. I need my bike for this weekend's Sani Pass ride and the subsequent TransBaviaans race, so I am content to settle at this stage. I also did do about 17000kms with the frame and it was definitively not spotless anymore.
  18. I recently discovered a crack on my 2010 Giant Anthem frame. The importer is exchanging the frame which I appreciate, however I am told the stripping, rebuilding, new press fit BB and fork steerer adaptor will be for my account. That I do not appreciate since the cost to be incurred is a result of the cracked frame. Do I have a case or is this how it works with warranty claim conditions? Any hubbers that can share their similar experience and which party eventually carried the consequential costs will be great.
  19. We all want some gossip and I also like to read the latest on the hub and web, and decide if I belive it to be BS or not. Paying for BS, different story. You will get a story and it will be something, if it will be accurate reflection of what actually transpired, I doubt it.
