  2. won't work in South Africa. No self respecting fun rider will put an extra 10g onto their bikes............
  3. the other mainstay of RSA single speed is the singular
  4. cotic frames go for about 5k
  5. http://www.on-one.co.uk/bikes they having a special on the inbred. Ask for slot drop outs if you can for versatility. Remember we don't pay UK vat but rather RSA vat and customs, shich is about 10% on retail (UK).
  6. Fad you are having me laughing on the floor. Don't let the Colonel get you.....
  7. I am about to order a bicycle from on-one. Has anyone had dealings with this method. They mention they use a worldwide courier service. Is it better to give a home address/work address or a postal address? How does the customs work? Does the courier pay it and then claim it on delivery? Any advice?
  8. on one. http://www.on-one.co.uk/news/teams-and-riders/q/date/2012/09/22/hoff-rides-on-one
  9. ummmm, singlespeed.......... why? dunno, just something you do. At some stage you realise that the number of gears on your bike, the amount of tupperware in your cupboard and the weight of things are not as important as the quality of your experience. So it is a bit of a counter culture, like drinking real beer brewed properly at a real brewery, eating real food prepared from real ingredients in a real kitchen, like running barefoot (or at least as close to it as possible), like doing your best (Always) and doing one good turn a day......... It is just something you do.
  10. Which would be the best steel frame Mtb to buy? Cotic Ragley On-one others
  11. Okay here is the rub, If you want to lose weight, burnt more than you eat. It is imposible to gain weight this way. (Astotle noted, a fat man eats before he exercises and a health man eats after he has exercises. Tea is a natural hunger appetite supressant, that is why the English drink tea with light snacks. Red wine is an anti oxidant, which helps explain why the French are healthy on their diet) Second, the jury is still out on the most effective source of energy for high performance athletes. On study found that FAT has more accessible energy per gram than carbohydrates. (see lore of running published before Noakes started questioning carbs openly) Another study by PVM found that protein is necessary for the body to be able to convert carbohydrates into energy. From this it is obvious it is easy to pack carbohydrates into the body, but not so easy for the body to start and sustain its conversion into energy. Maybe for elite athletes that need readily accesible energy to rather load on protien and fat with some carbohydrates, than just carbohydates. Thirdly, what is good for high erformance athletes is not necesarily good advice to the weakend (sic) warrior who is exercising primarily to lose weight and secondary to improve his dismal performance. Finally there is nothing wrong with a 3 hour exercise session followed by steak, potato and a glass of red wine, so long as it is a small steak chip and glass of wine (rule one eat less than you burnt).
  12. Start with the frame....... Get a road bike frame. If however, you want to cycle in a road race with your mountain bike consider the following: Slick tyres. Take out all the spacers and flip the stem (so it is flat) Shave your legs wear lycra pant lock out your shocks wear white socks take off your granny gear do not ride with your camelbak maybe put on a road cluster at the back. Other than that there is not much else you can do, other than get a road bike (sometimes cunningly disguised as a 29er)
  13. I have a st of GEax's on my bike. I have forgotten when I put them on. I think it was about four years ago, maybe five, On trans baviaans, two Karoo holiday tours and countless rides (daily commutes) and the damn things will not wear, puncture or get side wall cuts. I fear that they have merged with the rim tape and will outlast my rims. To change them may pose a bit of a problem, but I will face that maybe in another three years time........
  14. THE correct bike and mud is your friend. OOPS most bikes available in the RSA do not have decent clearances, and most South African cycles have yet to discover the freedom of a single speed. So when it rains instead of bog hunting they watch Barney on the telly.
  15. Answer: Acess is denied to all civilians. The area is a restricted military area. The public can only cycle there during the Military MIssile Mtb races hosted by the Mliitary Cycling club. THe Mliitary Cycling club may only cycle there once a month with the express permission of the Officer Commanding, which is given reluctantly, and only because routes need to be reconniered for the above mentioned races. In the past people attempted to enter the area and were shown away, and the military cycling club almost lost access to the area to host the Military Missile race as a result of this trespassing. So, do not even ask.
  16. http://www.theonion.com/articles/no-one-murdered-because-of-this-image,29553/ http://www.theonion.com/articles/obama-help-us-destroy-jesus-and-start-a-new-age-of,29478/ ummmmm, ja no well fine......
  17. you are right it is derogatory to force a mountain biker to ride on a 29er.
  18. I like you way you are thinking, 29ers are road bikes in disguise.
  19. Massive difference, yes, but only if it is worth it. Still got to feed the family at the end of the day. You know the possibility of buying for components and then putting it all together afterwards. I am open for all advice, apart from buying a 29er or giving the money to nishiki (unless it is in exchange for a yeti and bits) and definitely not to the ANC.
  20. Simple advice for a recovering athlete. Step One: Design a training programme for about 1 month. Be sure to set reasonable goals, in terms of distance, speed and frequency. Step Two: half all the distances AND go slower. Step three: cross out every second session/day. Step four: follow the new programme for at least a month before adding any distance, sessions or increasing the speed. (If you must cheat then walk only) You must develop the dicsipline to go out there regularly. step five: slowly increase the frequency of the sessions ( reduce recovery time) (from twice a week to four times a week, ext) step six: slowly increase distance and then finally speed. Remember eat little and sleep lots. Training partners help and infrequent races are good to measure your improvements.
  21. Got clearance to spend on a new Mtb (as the old one got liberated). Now for the shopping trips. What specials ext are available within this price range?
  22. at least let the "near naked girl" be attractive........... the correct rate is 1% commission for each 10% of flesh that is visible, with extra bonuses if you can get away with showing "no show area's" without the feminist squad taking offence.....
  23. you missed the single track that runs from the top gate down towards to golf course and then to the bottom gate. There is no need to cycle along the fence on the southern side. With the grass being burnt there you should be able to see it clearly.
