  1. It makes a big difference and trial running shoes are for trail running and orienteering, and not for cycling. Go buy cycling shoes and be done with it. After all you don't shop in your slippers do you?!
  2. same day as orienteering at Fountains. So fountains wins......
  3. That is the Sofehotel, great view of the Lagoon. Sign is new (last five years) though.
  4. Here is the standard answer to all of this. The rules of the oad state clearly, that a. you may only pass another vehicle WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO b. You may not pass a vehicle that is busy passing another vehicle. So if you see a cyclist in the middle of the road and it is obviously unsafe to pass that vehicle then you, as the motorist/ other cyclist are obliged by law to slow down and wait until it is safe to do so. Trying to lambast the other road user simply wil not take your responsiblility to use the road in a safe manner away from you. Problem is that most motorists do not see any vehicle smaller than theirs as legitimate road users. One day I would like to drive a G6 self propelled artillery gun down the N1 in rush hour traffic (or through craighall park) and teach these bastards a few lessons about road usage. On point (B) it is obvious that cyclists NEVER cycle abreast, but are in the process of passing each other, so it is obvious that the other road user should SLOW down and wait their turn to pass SAFELY. See a simple change of perspective and we are all friends again.

  6. Actually the estimates for when the nose disappeared seems to have occured when the Arab's invaded Egypt and being "insulted" by "images" of false gods defaced all the statutes in Egypt by smashing off their noses. The start of religious intolerance. THis may also be an attempt to blame the islamic hoards for the damage, as it was also practice to deface the statutes of unpopular rulers after they and their dynaties failed, in an attempt to ensure that they never returned or were worshiped as gods.
  7. this guy in silverton, does he have a name and telephone number?
  8. so you know how to get there. Which is good. THere are a number of options wrt routes, as your entry includes the use of fountains. Simple rule is clockwise. You can "Skip" single track sections by taying on the gravel road. You can taloir your route by including or exclucing sections and towards the end there is various options wrt the "fence" or "onion" hill. Good luck
  9. this thread is useless without pics. What does a car look like after a bike has been thrown through the windscreen?
  10. Not just the government that must wake up. It is anyone who drives in a motor vehicle. It is time people take responsibility for their individual actions and stop whining about the "government".
  11. This post is just begging to be highjacked...............
  12. An interesting point here. You are correct that if grammar and spelling are treated as two seperate concepts then the title should be "Are grammar and spelling....?" would be correct. However, if we experience "grammar and spelling" as one concept or collective, (being a singular "label" to express a particular subset of skills) then the correct way to title it would be "Is grammar and spelling..."
  13. not sure my bru. I have lik only been blonde lik one time, still have to grow the dark locks, so my ability to skientifik search is a bit impeaded like. But will get bak to u wen I is gray
  14. Is spelling and grammar such a big problem? Is it so important on a cycling forum? or are there aspirant primary school teachers that get a kick out of belittling others over non essentials? Do we attack the grammar and spelling so as to avoid the real issues?
  15. corrected.....
  16. The article is very interesting. The basic premise of the article is that LA has misrepresented the work which the livestrong foundation does, and that in effect the foundation is a slush fund for CANCER advocacy rather than a funding conduit for research. He some how tries to link this misrepresentation to a perceived or speculated dishonestly regarding LA's cycling career. He also speculates whether the foundation can survive withut LA and visa versa. Obviously, all the incongruencies regarding the movement of funds etc mokes it sound like who is paying for the ANC 100 year bash or Boesak accountancy. Just like the weirdo Bobby Fischer elevated chess in the USA in the 1970's despite being a slightly mad, LA has also increased the profile of cancer awareness and sport in the USA, despite being a most unlikeable person. The use desperately needs physical fitness and caner awareness, so no mater how evil Lance may be he in a twisted way is doing good. In the end he is doing more for the general health and fitness of the USA than say Eddy Merckx has done for health and fitness in Belgium, or Sir Hoy has done in the UK. So it is easier to find fault with those that try than thos that do nothing.
  17. with all this long distance one stage races, when will someone host the ceres to Calvinia on the longest gravel road race? or the ceres-citrusdal-ceres road race?
  18. Groenkloof is clockwise, just follow the bike markings. There are some places you can double back on (only on jeep track and gravel roads though), but clockwise has the right of way.
  19. I agree that if you only allow commuters to the ONLY traffic on the road we would see a lot less accidents. But also if we ban motorcars from the road we would also see a massive decline in accidents as well. If motorists just used available public transport we would also have safer roads. If only if only........
  20. The tiagra crack (crank) sets off alarm bells. It is a bit low specced for this frame. Find out more on why the group set is a mix and match affair. Check on a few sites to confirm the correct crank length for you and/or the frame. Not sure about raleigh carbon frames either. Better get someone who actually rides this frame to give you more info on that.
  21. My apologies Mr Holmes. Your statements sounded very "roadie" and were almost verbatum to statements made by a number of "hard core" Johannesburgers. Especially the one about "worked hard for the equipment........" and about those about racing. However, I suppose equipment does not define you at all. But seriously before you condemn my comments, think about what I have said, behind the banter there is some truth. You are welcome to play chess with me any time. PM me and we can set a few games up. As you have insulted my reasoning maybe you chess is better than mine, what is your national rating btw?
  22. Omega Man stop. You are going to burn in hell. Mountain biking is only racing. The Cape Epic is the ONLY real mountain bike race in the world. (especially now it has been safely canned into a more friendly format for rich people). All mountain bikes are 29ers dual suspension and carbon. If you don't own one then you are either poor or anti-establishment and therefore not welcome in South Africa. They have already started to pave the difficult sections of Groenkloof to make it safer. Panniers rust on bike shop racks.
  23. I suppose you are right, if you have to be conciously thinking about when that attack or movement occurs, you would probably react to slowly to make the selection. It should be instinctive almost subconcious (totally brainless). If you don't have some brain cells working on the next problem already, then I suppose racing is not for you. Now let me sip at my coffee and get back to my chess game........
  24. They all from Camp's Bay and not one of them a gorgeous teenager. Maybe they are roadies on transitional bikes? @fad I have both cycled races (stage races included) and and played chess tournaments. Chess is mentally more challenging because it includes instinct, preparation, memorization and long term abstract thinking. But then some cyclists may dispute this.
  25. search the forum, there are many threads answering this question. Remember if the salesman tells you that the bike will make it easier or you a better cyclist, just walk away.
