  1. This makes me laugh. R285 for 100+km on virtually closed but definitely marshalled roads with medics and uplift to hospital in case of an accident? R70 for a PPA event with partial road closure and the rest. And guys moan. Makes me think of the guys who ride in the bunch on a PPA fun ride without paying their race fees and no number but riding on their R50K Tarmac SL 3 in all the latest kit sucking on Goo or Hammer Gel at R18 a sachet. And the moaning continues. If you don't like it go ride with your mates and spend your R285 or R70 on something else. Like starting a new thread perhaps: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/115705-monetising-the-noise/
  2. A frame no one wants to buy for 4K otherwise it wouldn't be raffled?
  3. Stand alone unit: no belt or cadence 2,199 http://www.easygis.co.za/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=126_7&products_id=563 Bundle 2,699 http://www.easygis.co.za/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=126_7&products_id=564 Great guys to deal with. I bought from them.
  4. I know nothing about Cycleops. I bought a Tacx Fortius years ago and it has given me great service. The Fortius is 2 or 3 generations back, the current Genesis looks fantastic (not brought in by CoolHeat yet) and the software is now brilliant. I'm on v3.10 of Tacx Trainer Software, version 4 has just been released in Europe but is not here yet. Genesis is wireless, except for the power cord, and uses ANT+ so all the Garmin belts and sensors work. The software includes: Virtual Reality, you ride tracks against virtual partners needing to use gearing and steering. Real Life video, purchase all the best cycling routes/races/climbs and ride seeing the scenery and feeling the slope. Real Life Training, ride any route that you have the GPS routing and see it on Google Earth or street view. Catalyst, spinning programmes incl watts and slope. Analyst Web based racing (extra fee) where you can race any route against anyone world wide, live. Every workout/session gives you watts, heart rate, cadence, speed, calories and includes some nice graphics. The software described above requires a pretty smart PC to run properly, it doesn't work consistently on anything less than a dual core 2.6ghz processor with 512MB of graphics card. Budget PC won't work. I have found it works best to have a dedicated PC. I find the system works incredibly well but to get the best out of it you will have to fiddle with it occasionally. I've had to repair a noisy roller with epoxy which is a common repair on the Fortius. Also the heart rate signal does suffer from electrical interference which can be annoying. But overall, the Tacx has done more for my fitness and strength than any other training I have tried. Final tip: buy in Europe, there are deals and prices are significantly cheaper than in SA.
  5. Like the Landy has always been the model of reliability? Fact is that Land Rover South Africa had the highest warranty bill per vehicle sold out of any manufacturer in SA in the pre BMW takeover days. And no, my mother doesn't have a Mini Cooper S. She doesn't even have a Mini.
  6. When you drive a Land Rover you have to do that as it's not going to be long before you need the other driver's help....it originated with quality control.
  7. Why men wear work wear on site http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=/watch%3Fv%3DTtjzVHb8Hlk%26feature%3Dbf_prev%26list%3DUUHHZCN53hIjn_BYvGD4reiQ same video without age warning but picture quality a bit worse

  9. RAI live only on week days, footy takes over on weekends.
  10. Not at all, 17 years but I suffer from deafness most of the day
  11. Clearly the headphones have played a big part in keeping them together for 18 years. After all if you can't hear her how can you get irritated?
  12. These guys have a hanger for almost every bike ever made: http://www.derailleurhanger.com/
  13. What about torn, used Assos bibs? No, in fact why advertise them at all?
  14. Go for the one that makes you faster... It is possible to load Garmin files into polarpersonaltrainer.com and get Vitality points but it is easier to do a few rides and let SA-Active.co.za give you the points. 15,000 for activity is so low anyway, just 3 or 4 events
  15. Probably non existent live but streaming over the interweb is great. Choose your own language and commentator. RAI channel 430
  16. And not a tatt in sight....what a pleasure
  17. The Spring Classics are over and, having watched them all, they were a bit boring. Very little animation, no attacks far out (or even close out) from any of the big names. Except Tom in the Paris Roubaix, all the the winners waited around till the end before having a dig. Is this the lack of dope in the peleton or the UCI points system with teams going for points to ensure their UCI Pro Tour licence for next season? I miss the days where riders attacked all day, flew like jet planes, then came back the next day and did it all again. Are we in the era of wheel sucking and marking your opponent rather than having a go?
  18. Go to your chemist, buy a CR2354 battery. Get a small star screwdriver. Unscrew 4 screws on the back of the watch. Lift off the back being careful not to damage the o-ring. Remove and replace the battery. Refit the back cover. Before you comment about waterproof etc, I've done this twice already in 9 years and have ridden some pretty wet trails. Polar are taking the piss.
  19. Not all do. They seem to change year on year. 2011 and later have RockShox internals with Solo Air.
  20. Maybe, if you've made an appointment first. WTF, need an appointment to give the guy work? Cape Cycle Systems in Lansdowne, they were the distributor before Cannondale got taken over in the US of A
  21. They appear to have a few trade accounts form distributors, I would say most likely the site is a hobby and the guy has a day job, just processes orders in spare time and doesn't want to get hassled with customer queries. After all they get so many enquiries it takes 48 hours to answer yours if you send one in! I wouldn't go as far as to say it's suspect, just not a big player but has access to a bit of kit.
  22. Here is the full calendar that Hanna Klein featured in for that photo. No open plan office warning as they all pro cyclists at the top of their game.... No tatts, just fit cyclists. http://www.bikeradar.com/gallery/article/cyclepassion-calendar-2012-32426 http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/news/2011/11/16/1321458127074-11szswn243yh1-670-75.jpg
  23. Anine, on 19 April 2012 - 12:46 , said:: "If you're doing 20 or even 30km/h on an 80km/h stretch of road, then you are obstructing traffic." There is no regulation at all about moving vehicles obstructing traffic. This is largely the cause of the problem. Ignorance. On the whole motorists believe they have the right to the road. Even if cyclists are single file but not hugging the kerb. There is no God given right to hoot at a cyclist riding single file on a public road, even if they are in the middle of the road. Unfortunately both parties are at fault of breaking the law/ignorance. The law says: Motorists It is OK to overtake in the right hand lane, if safe to do so. It is not OK to pass and then cut back onto left until safe It is not OK to drive recklessly just because some cyclists have pissed you off Cyclists It is not OK to ride two abreast UNLESS overtaking so 2 abreast in a paceline is OK It is not OK to overtake if being overtaken ie 3 abreast is out If there is a cycle lane, you HAVE to use it Here is what the law actually says, in lawyer speak: NO. 93 OF 1996: NATIONAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACT, 1996. 63. (1) No person shall drive a vehicle on a public road recklessly or negligently. (2) Without restricting the ordinary meaning of the word "recklessly" any person who drives a vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property shall be deemed to drive that vehicle recklessly. National Road Traffic Act Regulations Vehicle to be driven on left side of roadway 296. (1) Any person driving a vehicle on a public road shall do so by driving on the left side of the roadway and, where such roadway is of sufficient width, in such manner as not to encroach on that half of the roadway to his or her right: Provided that such encroachment shall be permissible-- where it can be done without obstructing or endangering other traffic or property which is or may be on such half and for a period and distance not longer than is necessary and prudent and provided that it is not prohibited by a road traffic sign; or in compliance with a direction of a traffic officer or a road traffic sign. Passing of vehicle 298. (1) Subject to the provisions of subregulation (2) "blind spots" and (4) "not encroach on the roadway to right in such manner as may obstruct or endanger such oncoming traffic" and regulation 296, the driver of a vehicle intending to pass any other vehicle proceeding in the same direction on a public road shall pass to the right thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive on the left side of the roadway until safely clear of the vehicle so passed: Provided that, in the circumstances as aforesaid, passing on the left of such vehicle shall be permissible if the person driving the passing vehicle can do so with safety to himself or herself and other traffic or property which is or may be on such road Riding on pedal cycles 311. (1) No person shall ride a pedal cycle on a public road unless he or she is seated astride on the saddle of such pedal cycle. (2) Persons riding pedal cycles on a public road shall ride in single file except in the course of overtaking another pedal cycle, and two or more persons riding pedal cycles shall not overtake another vehicle at the same time. (3) No person riding or seated on a pedal cycle on a public road shall take hold of any other vehicle in motion. (4) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall deliberately cause such pedal cycle to swerve from side to side. (5) No person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall carry thereon any person, animal or object which obstructs his or her view or which prevents him or her from exercising complete control over the movements of such pedal cycle. (6) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road shall do so with at least one hand on the handle-bars of such pedal cycle. (7) Whenever a portion of a public road has been set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, no person shall ride a pedal cycle on any other portion of such road. (8) A person riding a pedal cycle on a public road or a portion of a public road set aside for use by persons riding pedal cycles, shall do so in such manner that all the wheels of such pedal cycle are in contact with the surface of the road at all times.
  24. Stick better than a block of butter? Are they the white ones?
  25. I watched the Amstel Gold on EuroSport. It was amazing to see little country lanes in the Netherlands with no painted centre line but TWO, yes TWO, cycle lanes, one on each side of the road, different colour tar and thick painted stripes. It's about culture. What chance have we as cyclists when we see things like a gang rape video going viral? I've just read an article on CNN about the mess that is commuting in Africa for the werkers and remember another last year on Joburg being the worst city IN THE WORLD for time spent commuting. Then I read stats about the obesity of our people. It all makes sense to cycle. There are few commutes that take longer by bike than by taxi/bus/train/car. But Shock Jocks like John Robbie and Gareth Cliff do their best to make cyclists (recreational or commuting) pariahs. They should realise that our country is quickly getting pretty f*cked up and they can do something positive about it. Safe cycling and tolerance is but a small step.
