  1. The road race has lost it's Argus seeding status due to the excessive use of the N2 to Plett which was deemed unsafe. That and the politics around the whole Oyster Festival sponsorship by Pick 'n Pay and other multinationals like Heineken. This year the ride has reverted to the traditional route along the N2 to Hoekwill with about 10kms off the N2 heading up Hoekwill Hill, a nice 2.4 km climb with 200 metres climbing before turning and heading back to Knysna. Maybe the numbers in Oudtshoorn will not pick up and the Knysna ride will resurface as a seeding event.
  2. I cannot understand how the paid "training camp" for another race is appealing. Just get out there and ride, why pay extra to join an event? There are plenty of places you can do 2 or 3 days of 100km plus rides on gravel/jeep/single track without being subjected to the organised chaos that some of these events are. And you can choose your own start time, route, water stop and accommodation.
  3. How hard is it to buy one of those little goo bottles and decant your goo before the ride? Much easier to use and no mess, on hands, in pocket or on the trail or road. F*ck wits.
  4. It is a fact that Maths and Science have suffered while the number of matriculants have increased. Left or right hand?
  5. Your weight in pounds divided by 7 plus 2 psi for rear minus 1 psi for front Racing Ralph EVO with Snakeskin, perfect for Epic. And any other ride for mid field riders.
  6. So, no riding at all since last year's Argus? Breaks out singing "How the hell can we believe you?" I think Josh asked a valid question....
  7. Duty is 35% and VAT at 14% is paid by the customer to the shop to SARS, on a R2,000 retail price VAT paid over is R246, paid by the shop and distributor to SARS. Weather the distributor claims some back or not, SARS collects R246 VAT plus at least R245 Duty out of the retail price of R2,000. Duty does vary as freight and clearing does get included in cost for dutiable value. Close to R500 is not included in the US price, sales tax is state specific and not included in published retail prices while there is no duty on helmets in the US.
  8. For some or other reason helmets attract a 35% duty plus 14% VAT. In addition, we are one of the most expensive countries to ship to with our freight agents ripping the ring out of it to land a container in SA. All these costs are paid over before the goods hit the warehouse and we have interest rates out of line with the 1st world and the picture starts getting a bit clearer. Then take the fact that SA market takes less than the weekly USA demand for a product in a year and the local guys are entitled to make a return on their cash and you end up with that price variance. Duty and VAT alone account for almost half the difference....
  9. 300 Rondt too much? Probably riding your R30K road bike with your R3k shoes and kit....
  10. Like Mbeki did with the HIV/AIDS debate? We can all find views that support ours...

  12. I disagree with this strategy, it is really important to get a seeding on day 1 and keep it for the duration. By being seeded your start in the top half of the field and can mosey up to the start gate 10-15 minutes before the off. Do this event unseeded and you'll add hours to your day, either getting to the start gate early to be at the front of unseeded or onto the finish as you get stuck behind slow hikers on difficultish sections. Go as hard as you can every day, that why you've trained.
  13. Take wet wipes for your morning and any other dump, you don't want to be sitting in shite all day. And use pro-glide or some other lube in your shorts. Don't carry too much in your camelback, typical newbie mistake, there are 3 very well stocked water points on the route each day.
  14. A new form of Phising protection? Just register your password and home affairs and stop receiving all those emails from ABSA?
  15. Even the bus drivers in Golden Arrow buses have caught the positivity vibe, 5 separate drivers politely beeped to indicate they were giving me right of way in the traffic on Saturday morning. Such a pleasure.
  16. 10 m/s after 8 at Cape Point. Not so gentle a breeze, quaintly termed a fresh breeze
  17. The shop system was used purely for ease of use our end, no cost and no hassle. There is an option on checkout to opt out of a newsletter, simply uncheck that and there will be no mail sent to you. Guaranteed.
  18. This is a free download but you do need to add it to your cart and then checkout. Yes, it is the 2012 route up Boyes Drive, but it says that on the product page....
  19. Any one looking for a split time calculator for the 2012 Argus is welcome to download the file from this site: http://www.micro.co.za/categories/adults/ Look for Argus Split Time calculator. Download is free and calculator is based on the splits from the Argus site.
  20. If you have a carbon fork use cable ties and mount it at the bottom of the fork just above the static side of the quick release. Use some 2 sided tape to ensure no rubbing.
  21. Old thread, same question. Anyone got a split calculator for the Argus?

    Argus D group?

Bummer. Put a plate in and you'll be riding again in a week. That'll give you time to get to the Cape too. Just don't fall again. Amazing what a decent orthopod can do.
  23. Rules schmules, just don't fall and need to be hospitalised. It's one part of the Argus that is irritating, "we'll ban you for life". Now step back in line. The ban is actually only a year for 1st offence and only to the rider who rides with someone else's chip, not the chip provider. Obviously, don't use your own chip. This is SA, rules are for guidance only....
  24. Bad add? I was expecting some poor arithmetic with a basic error like 1 + 1 = 3. Maybe child without helmet doesn't add up?
